What's the essay topic?
Posted by Emma, 8 years ago:

In changes brought about by contemporary globalization, in cultural terms, who wins and who loses?

I've written most of it, just gotta add some evaluation - empirical adequacy etc :(
Posted by Desmond, 8 years ago:

why the hell do you watch such crap?
Posted by Saltation, 8 years ago:

possible useful topic to include (fuck off desmond)(et al):
who wins? who loses?
what is the OBJECTIVE of the essay.
If you summarise the left as social status at the expense of others (as opposed to the right's social status at the expense of others), you have an essay in 5 minutes. with total conformance to what your lecturers/tutors hope for.

hubblesite.org/newscenter/a...
if you're into space stuff

A dramatic new [was] time-lapse movie by the Hubble telescope shows for the first time seasonal changes on the planet. Once considered one of the blander-looking planets, Uranus is now revealed as a dynamic world with the brightest clouds in the outer solar system and a fragile ring system that wobbles like an unbalanced wagon wheel. The clouds are probably made of crystals of methane, which condense as warm bubbles of gas well up from deep in the planet's atmosphere.

I seem to be the only person to think "The Cadbury Gorilla advert is mildly amusing at best".

Absolutely. There was totally no sense of surprise or unveiling in it. I fail to see how anyone could not have predicted that the hairy fella was sat at a set of drums. My only reaction was "Oh. Thought so". The only thing of note was the realism of the Gorilla, really.

Meh. Double meh.

not a video exactly, but increasingly animated as it goes on:

fury.com/aoliza/chatframe.p...

The Back Story: In 1966 Joseph Weizenbaum at M.I.T. wrote ELIZA, a famous program that simulates a Rogerian psychoanalyst by taking excerpts from the subject's comments and posing questions back to the subject. While not a giant leap in AI programming, ELIZA (named after Eliza Dolittle in My Fair Lady) showed that some semblance of 'awareness' could be synthesized simply by using input pattern recognition, combined with predefined phrases. Some people claim that ELIZA was the first program to pass the Turing Test, fooling subjects into thinking it was an actual person.

Enter AOLiza: Using a publicly available Perl version of ELIZA, a Mac with nothing better to do than play psychoanalyst, a few applescripts, and an AOL Instant Messenger account that has a high rate of 'random' people trying to start conversations, I put ELIZA in touch with the real world. Every few days I'll put up the latest 'patients.' Names have been changed to protect the... well, everyone.

if you know Eliza, this is hilarious. if you don't, you'll soon twig and it gets hilarious.

men (tend to) react more to disease/damage than women do for the same reason women have horrific rates of being invalided out of basic training in the army/navy. and not just bad injuries; permanent life-affecting life-crippling injuries they've inflicted on themselves then exacerbated past the point of no return.

this outcome is the flipside of the same tendency for women relative to men to obsess to fibrillation-point about the way they look.

and both tendencies are just outcomes of the same underlying DNA strategy.

Thems some pretty special lyrics:

"Take your baby by the hair
And pull her close and there there there
Take your baby by the ears
And play upon her darkest fears"
Posted by WarHead, 7 years ago:

Indeed. But then a lot of lyrics don't stand up to scrutiny. Hardly anything by Yes made any real sense and often wasn't even grammatically correct. And I've just been revisiting some old Led Zep on the journey to work, and most of theirs consists of 'Ohhhh baby, baby, baby' and 'Ohh Yeahhhhhhhh, Ohhh yeahhhh.'

As long as it sounds alright and the artist isn't precious about their artistic abilities, I can live with it.

but

then see it hover and circle normally at the same rate. ok, that's normal behaviour. so... factor in gyroscopic stability and...

obviously video-tampering's always possible. but there's nothing here that's outside possibility with a superlight body, a (relatively) heavy rotor (both strongly suggested by the first 10 seconds or so), and the current engines.

and lunatic skill.

No way. The changes in momentum are simply not possible, especially some of the rates of change in momentum. Nor are some of the turns against the axis of thrust of the two rotors. There is no way that is in any way real. Come on, upside down flying into a flip over the tail rotor?

Just what bit of the helicopter created the momentum or thrust to produce that?

Um... maybe I'm missing something, but isn't the dude talking geeky stuff the same as the lunatic hitting the front page of reddit?

"this speaker is full of himself and his insignificant ego. He is spouting his worthless opinion without offering any sort of technical insight. also he's pretty much a dickbag."

Own up, who's got the comedy account on youtube then?

all news and weather should be delivered by people cuddling cats . it's for the best [via myles]

Classic. It would have been quite surreal if he hadn't picked it up as all we'd have seen was the tip of its tail going past.
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

fortunately, he rendered it non-surreal by cuddling a cat during the weather forecast

I used to love Bugs, it was great and terrible at the same time.

that bicyclist is a bit awesome

can't find the similarly awesome motorbike vid i was thinking of, but i DID re-find this:
"So, what's the most unusual military vehicle you can think of? Maybe the Japanese airplane-launching submarine of WW2? Or perhaps the Soviet attempts to build a flying tank? Or perhaps the 1000 ton rolling fortress the Germans tried to build in WW2? All quite odd, I agree, but barely made it past the drawing boards. For us, the oddest is a scooter armed with a 75mm cannon.

quite like the "dial a phone on your hand" bit. that and the "hold your hands up, take a photo" bit, with the display of scattered photos on the next wall you see.

Yeah. You'd need a small nuclear power plant to give that projector enough power to work in the sunshine, but it's still awesome.

Maybe it could be fitted with a laser so that if the ambient light is too bright it burns the image into whatever it's projecting on to.
