What is the difference between "pikey" and "chav" ?

I'd say that pikey is, as they say in the report, a more modern form of Gypsy innit. I'd say chav is entirely different, whereby a chav is likely to wear velour tracksuits and big hoop earrings, sport a croydon facelift (girls) or gelled forward hair (boys), go on dates to maccy d's and listen to music in public on their phone (without headphones) (and bad music at that); a pikey is also likely to wear tracksuits (but not as a fashion choice) and would probably nick sweets out of shops. Not that I'm generalising or anything but that should give you an idea.
My friend used to borrow all my stuff and then never give it back, we used to call her a pikey behind her back. Luckily she stopped being my friend when i was about 14. Having seen some pictures of her lately through the magic stalking device that is facebook, i'd say she was veering more towards chav

Haha! Thanks :)
In school days, we used to use Pikey as the same thing as chav, we never used chav that much at all really.
Snatch has proper Pikeys in it, brad pitt is one :)

Proper use of Pikey, as in Brad Pitt in Snatch is probably the equivilant of K***er (edited because i felt bad). Not being from SA I'm unsure as to quite how offensive that is but I have a feeling it's pretty bad.

It is EXTREMELY offensive. It's equivalent to the N-word.

thank goodness the iamcal readership is primarily white and non african-based.

It seems odd that racial slurs are deemed more offensive than class slurs? I mean it seems people say Pikey and Chav quite easily whereas I can't even bring myself to say K- or N-

POVVO!
I've always seen the word chav as pretty offensive. Making class prejudice acceptable is never a good thing, right?
Posted by
syl, 3 months ago:
I'm not saying it's acceptable because it isn't, I'm saying it seems less taboo than racism? Maybe it's just me.

yeah it's just you, you are more taboo than racism :)

Those chocolate boobs, if I could just dream,
Sure would look tasty all covered with cream.
So my hand though unsteady
Has by throbbing dick ready
To cover them both in a hot sticky stream.

Chav isnt a class. It's a lifestyle. You get them from all walks of life. It's only the mainstream media that has attributed it to a new kind of lower/working class. I'll agree that's bad, Doc, but a chav is just a self, simple and close minded little cock or cockette with about as much empathy as a continuously undoing shoestring.
Sul: Good point. I'm well up for generalisations about people not based upon class (if that makes any sense!) Although I don't really approve of it now being acceptable to describe the entire 'working class' population as checky-hat wearing sovereign smokin thievies.
Axeman: Is it you sending me those filthy emails?

Re: Chav
Sorry to go on but I dont think people are trying to generalise the working class. I've met you and seriously, you're in a class of your own, but Im probably working class. Would you consider me a chav? Although yes I do smoke sovs. It was a bad day when they printed a burburry tartan on the packs and I realised just how shit the fags I smoke are. Still do though.

It seems to me as a forrin, that it has more to do with how one dresses and behaves, rather than one's income bracket. I dunno. I'll have to come over and see for myself. Although one probably has to live in a place for a long time to pick up on all the subtleties.
>The family said both "hit the bottle" after the elder man's wife died.
but they still couldn't get the sauce out. despite this, they were both on it. 50% casualties reported.
hear hear. (99.9999% of) people don't brand "the working class" as chavs, they brand obnoxious ratbags wearing identikit status-badges strutting and whining and fucking other people up, as chavs. likewise, travellers are not universally branded pikeys, but people who take the piss out of their surroundings (physical and people), are. in both cases, the word originally used for a distinct subset of a group has then been used outside that group and describes the behaviour, rather than a social class.
i always find it amusing that so many of the british people who get angry about "the working class" and inappropriate characterisations/stereotypes and the evils of making assumptions about people based on "class", will turn and lambast traditional landowners messing about with horses and dogs as vile repressers of the poor, hateworthy symptoms of an obsolete class, etc.
ie, just as defending blacks against racism but not whites is not anti-racism but reverse-racism, they are not anti-classists but reverse-classists. inversion of "virtue" is not more virtuous. four legs good, two legs not necessarily bad.

Well said.
Sul: Yep, good point. I don't think I'd consider you a chav.
I guess it's partly from reading The Argus (our local paper down-south)'s website and comments: here's an example from a story about the Beast of Bevendean:

i don't think a wild cat would suffer the indignity of living of the scraps of KFC's, Kebabs, ASDA 'value' products, WKD bottles and all the other sh**e 'Hawkers live on. You never know, it may well die of a drug overdose if it stays there much longer.
ie: making a generalisation about everyone who lives in a particular area based on the socio-economic state of those who live there. Most of Whitehawk is quite nice, to be honest. It's definately a poorer area than say; Queens Park (where I live - but then I'm pretty darn posh), but a judgement about the character of people who live there based on the wealth of an area seems pretty snobbish to me.
Saying that, when you say "chav" you aren't necessarily referring to the "working class", but some lad in a white tracksuit and one of those caps who's going to kick your ass outside the pub if you're not careful. That's fair enough; but I don't think it stops a large quantity of people making statements like our friend sm above...
And Salty; I think you need to make a distinction between "messing about wtih horses and dogs" and "fox hunting". You can use phrases like "traditional landowners" all you like, but that's just as loaded a phrase as "hateworthy symptoms of an obsolete class". Well, almost. Tradition don't make something good. It just means it's always been done. You can imagine someone 300ish years ago saying "traditional slaveowners".
"A CHAV!!"
