Speaking of "Che", I thought this might be interesting :

video.foxnews.com/v/3982573...

Ernesto Guevara (June 14,[1] 1928 – October 9, 1967) commonly known as Che Guevara (Spanish pronunciation: [tʃe geˈβaɾa]), El Che, or simply Che, was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, author, intellectual, guerrilla leader, diplomat, military theorist, and major figure of the Cuban Revolution. Since his death, his stylized visage has become a ubiquitous countercultural symbol and global insignia within popular culture.[4]

As a young medical student, Guevara traveled throughout Latin America and was transformed by the endemic poverty he witnessed.[5] His experiences and observations during these trips led him to conclude that the region's ingrained economic inequalities were an intrinsic result of monopoly capitalism, neocolonialism, and imperialism, with the only remedy being world revolution.[6] This belief prompted his involvement in Guatemala's social reforms under President Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán, whose eventual CIA-assisted overthrow solidified Guevara's radical ideology. Later, while living in Mexico City, he met Raúl and Fidel Castro, joined their 26th of July Movement, and invaded Cuba aboard the Granma with the intention of overthrowing U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista.[7] Guevara soon rose to prominence among the insurgents, was promoted to second-in-command, and played a pivotal role in the successful two year guerrilla campaign that deposed the Batista regime.[8]

Some duality...the old question Freedom Fighter or Terrorist. See also Nelson Mandela.

If the video is by fox news I think I'll pass thanks.

Che, is fox news rubbish? I'd not heard of it before. Yea, Guevara seems like a VERY interesting person. I think he must have had oodles of charisma. Yum.

I'm not massively surprised you haven't heard of Fox News (not sure if Rupee & Son have the same stranglehold on the South African meedja that they have in the UK & US), but very surprised you've not come across Che Guevara ... here, you can't walk twenty paces without seeing a teenage revolutionary wearing one of these:

Syl: Che is one of these historical figures who polarise opinion. You either hear the "he was a saviour and a saint, and power to the people (some people we met in Cuba were genuinely upset when talking about his death)" and on the other side (primarily ex-cubans living in Florida) you get "he was evil, he slaughtered innocents and stole our land and our country"

As with so many things, it was more likely somewhere in between these extremes. One thing I would say in favour of the revolution and Che's part in it was that, before the revolution, the literacy rate in Cuba was pretty low (somewhere around 60% I think) only three or four years after the revolution due to a programme of sending teachers out to rural areas, the literacy rate was not far off 100%. Which is a remarkable achievement. Also Cuba's health care system is amazingly good, and they send doctors to lots of poor South American countries (although sometimes in exchange for oil which they can't afford).

The thing I find most interesting about Che himself is that he was a fairly clumsy guerilla fighter and also that he suffered from asthma. I saw his inhaler when we visited his memorial. The funniest story was that they raided a town for supplies and during the raid he left his inhaler behind and they had to plan another raid to go and retrieve it!

To bring the topic back to the original subject of downloading things to listen to
I would really recommend if you fancy something interesting, that you find a copy of The Mark Steel Lectures (they were on the radio originally). There is one on Che Guevara (where I heard the inhaler story) and ones on other historical figures such as Charles Darwin. They are informative but also very funny in the way he presents them.

They should be around on the net as MP3s somewhere.
If you are interested I could probably email the Che one to you.

oh and Fox News polarise opinion too.
Most people think they are right wing lunatic twats.
And the rest of the people are wrong.

Doc : I did know about Guevara, I was just interested that that video clip was so anti. That's why I posted the other bit that was a bit more flattering, ;) I'm afraid I have not bothered to read much about him, until I saw that link on Facebook. I'm quite fascinated by people who get off their arses and do something about things they feel strongly about. I aspire to it and sadly don't live up to it. :( Also people who have such powerful personalities that they can mobilize a whole country to revolt. Adolf Hitler had that power, unfortunately he used it in a horrible way.

Che : Thanks for your post, yes I would be interested, thanks. I laughed my head off at the inhaler bit! "Abort Mission! *WHEEZE* Abort Mission! *WHEEZE* I left my inhaler behind!

Fanks Warhead! (That's awesome!)
