Please help me iamcallers. I need a new car. I want a small, entry-level car, 3 door little city thing.

Polo Vivo or Toyota Yaris?

I can't decide.

Brock! Car person. Please help.

Hyundai i20?

I've hired a Yaris before and it's lovely. That's all I can bring to this conversation though. Sorry.

Thank you :) That does help :)

Dunno about the VW but I know the Yaris holds its price quite well as my daughter was thinking about buying one a couple of years ago and a motor engineer mate of mine gnerally rates Toyotas as reliable and good value.

Thanks warhead! That helps a lot :)

I love my citroen c3

Although the Polo is fine, I'd get the Yaris, I think.

The Yaris looks like it has the speedo in a really weird place.

Thanks Miki and Brock :) I think Yaris it is. Now I have to get my head around 5 years of debt.
Posted by syl, 1 year ago:

Che, really?
Posted by beargod, 1 year ago:

The speedo is in the same place as my Civic, my sister had a Yaris and she loved it!

I dont feel like I was very helpful, but you're welcome ;-)

You added a new car to the radar...I hadn't thought of a Citroen C3. We battle with parts here in SA for French cars though, apparently. We have VW plants and Toyota plants (which are closing down some offices because of strikes) :(

Strikes have been pretty bad here for a few weeks. Nurses/teaches and police strike went on for weeks, I think it's actually still on. I'm too scared to watch the news anymore. I wish the strikes would end. The nurses, teachers and police get paid a real pittance, so I can understand their grievance, but people are dying in the hospitals.

Every week some other group is striking. Getting kind of tired of it.

Looks like the car is on hold because I might be looking for a new job.

You know, one starts stagnating after a while.

Buy a second hand car.

Grim... makes a good point.
I'd never buy a brand new car, it loses a good chunk of its value the moment you drive it out of the dealership.
And 5 years of debt? Blegh! No thanks!

Or: Lease a new car, like what I do.
Posted by syl, 1 year ago:

Isn't leasing more expensive than buying?
Posted by Miki, 1 year ago:

yes, unless you drive an awful lot of distance
but it gives you 1. a new(ish) car all the time and 2. peace of mind about extra costs
so it depends on how much you value those things

Thank you :)

Leasing long-term (ie. three years) is no-where near as expensive as buying. Things like car tax, insurance, servicing bills, repairs, tyres, etc, etc (basically everything except fluids) are covered by the leasing company (although that's in the UK, of course).
Posted by Miki, 1 year ago:

for me: (obviously in the netherlands)
everything is included in my 4 year contract (or max km whichever comes first)
everything Grim said plus fluids and petrol, also for private use. Also for Steve to drive it.
But it is still more expensive then driving privately depending on two conditions: the price of buying the private car and the number of km (ie the price of petrol privately)
as I work for an IT company people have excel sheets where you can enter the price of a car and the number of km you expect to drive and you can see the difference.
But you never know in advance how many kms you are going to drive as you dont know where your next assignment is going to be so by choosing the lease car I sort of choose to pay a bit extra for peace of mind and ease.

But all of this wont help you because the rules might all be different in SA so you should find a lease persen there and ask around

Thanks very much Grim... and Miki. I will try and find out how leasing works here in SA. It never occurred to me to lease a vehicle, but it looks like a good idea.

There's a new Toyota Zen coming out in November apparently. Anyone heard about it? I can't find anything when I Google it.

I have the same car as Miki! Car snap!

I somehow snuck a Mondeo Titanium X Sport past the wife by saying it had a really good baby-carrying safety rating (it does too - it's got nineteen fucking airbags. If there's ever an accident I expect it to simply inflate and bounce down the road like a bouncy castle).
And I've got a Range Rover that I ruined.

[edit] Ooh, here is a picture of the Mundano:

Eighteen months until it goes back, and then I should probably choose something that doesn't drink more petrol than Buncefield.
But I won't =]

yay AP!
apart from having an excellent car, how are you?

shiny Grim...
instead of airbags I'm still waiting for that foam from demolition man
