Discussion » Anyone up for a game of Mornington Crescent?

Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

Alfie? And anyone else who knows the rules....

Shall I start?

Trafalgar Square.
Posted by Alfie, 6 years ago:

Are we playing the Reverse Shaftsbury Avenue rules?
Posted by Alfie, 6 years ago:

well I guess either way it doesn't matter for the first 3 rounds.

Knightsbridge
Posted by Sul, 6 years ago:

Southwark
Posted by Alfie, 6 years ago:

Ahahaha, amateur.

Regents park
Posted by cal, 6 years ago:

let's step this up a little...

Bermondsey
Posted by Alfie, 6 years ago:

Ooooooooh, your go Sul.
Posted by Sul, 6 years ago:

Kilburn Park

Better?
Posted by Alfie, 6 years ago:

Oh I see where you are going with that one.

Hyde Park Corner
Posted by cal, 6 years ago:

ha! you left yourself open for this:

Alperton
Posted by Alfie, 6 years ago:

Didn't spot that one.
Posted by Sul, 6 years ago:

Gimme a break, I'm new:

Stratford
Posted by Alfie, 6 years ago:

Sul, Sul, Sul.
This is reverse shaftsbury remember?

You've given me a clear path to:

Baker Street
Posted by Sul, 6 years ago:

Dammit!
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

I'd like to play the Hoffenbach with a transom slide down to ...
Wimbledon Park!

But I always fumble that one so I'll stick to a simpler laydown:

Croxley
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

Aussie play - typical. You left your laterals totally exposed.

Elephant and Castle.
Posted by Alfie, 6 years ago:

I have to take my hat off to that one. Beautiful play.
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

I may be old and slow, but there's no substitute for experience.
Posted by cal, 6 years ago:

i think you'll notice that croxley is now in knip - an awesome move
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

/me blushes

I wondered who was going to spot that.
Posted by Sul, 6 years ago:

Fuck! I'm so out of my league. Ok. Who's next?
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

Don't give up so easily; just take your time and make your move.
Posted by Sul, 6 years ago:

Oh god. Ok, I think I've got one:

Seven Sisters
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

See!!11 You just need confidence in your own abilities.

Lemme seeee.........

Pimlico
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

Damn, I'm going to incur a congestion charge. This is what happens when you've never actally lived down The Smoke.
Posted by Brock, 6 years ago:

Hmmmm. I was half way through consulting the Pimlico almanac regulations from the regional championships, but I see no way to get to Marble Arch from there and that's the only move, perversely, that I can follow, so I'll bow out.

Fuckers.
Posted by Brock, 6 years ago:

Wait, wait, I've got it. Assuming that a bipolar extraction is valid (Croxley is in the knip, after all), then I move thus:

Gallions Reach.

(Man, I am rusty)
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

Am I still in knip yet?

bugger

i *knew* i should have gone the transom
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

While you dither about, I'll go Old Kent Road, which is, you'll note, a double score when approached from the North.

Just think yourselves lucky I didn't have any hotels on there.
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

Rotherhithe

a rather nice escape, even if i do say so myself. 3 points for the trajectory, and a double indemnity.

i almost feel sorry for the follow-on
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

Hang on, 18th move coming up, so it's time to pick the teams.

I'll take Sul as I feel it would be in both our interests for me to mentor him.
Posted by Brock, 6 years ago:

Isn't 'mentor' icelandic for 'anally violate'? Just asking.
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

"purple arse"?
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

/me points you at the 'alternate definitions' thread
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

I thought mentor was a mad robot that transforms into some sort of vehicle that killed its occupants, but that's not important now.

Are we choosing teams or playing through?
Posted by Brock, 6 years ago:

It looks very much like a follow through to me. After all, Chatsbury avenue precedent appears to be being played, and we were initially bounded by the reverse Shaftsbury Avenue rules, so I imagine that teams are not strictly legal.

You cheating bastard.
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

oh, well played! i didn't see that one coming.
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

I was invoking the 18th Move Rule. Read your copy of Willesden, wombat.
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

well, it's all happening here now, sports fans. warhead's wombat stumps brock's cheating bastard, leaving everything to play for.
Posted by Doctor Lucid, 6 years ago:

Westbourne Park.

So there.
Posted by Brock, 6 years ago:

Blimey. Where did he come from?

Osterley (that should head off any slide toward Hampstead Heath)
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

I said play through, not follow through. They're entirely different.

Anyway, Chalfont & Latimer.
Posted by Sul, 6 years ago:

Epping

And an end of line bonus for me. Thank you very much. :D
Posted by Doctor Lucid, 6 years ago:

Four words.

Harrow. On. The. Hill.
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

Badly Drawn Sul (the cat in the hat) makes a remarkable comeback.

Badly Drawn Sul

But I'm gonna bounce of that end of line with Theydon Bois.
Posted by Brock, 6 years ago:

I think I will nicely knock the momentum out of Warhead's (effective admittedly) line reversal with the following:

Crystal Palace
Posted by Sul, 6 years ago:

Wow. Brock's really laid down a stumper there.
Posted by frankie, 6 years ago:

Unfortunately, this tradition appeals to the cliquery of some insecure people in a very obnoxious way. Lacking the comic talent of a Willie Rushton or Graeme Garden, for them the main appeal of the game becomes the feeling of superiority over those who are seeing the game played for the first time, and the warm feeling of being in the clique that knows the secret. For them, Mornington Crescent is no more than a socially acceptable form of trolling.
Posted by Alfie, 6 years ago:

lol
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

technically, frankie just won the game he was seeking to diss, didn't he?
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

What he says is all true, but it doesn't stop me enjoying the cut and thrust of the game with those in the clique.

(I often wondered whether frankie was a male or ... not.)
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

Then again, it's no worse than the cliquery we apply when MJ fans etc. turn up here.
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

he's ineuston!
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

hahahahahahaaaaaaaa
Posted by Miki, 6 years ago:

frankie is a she
and what she said
whoooosh to the dutch girl, I have never been so confused by an iamcal thread, and that includes all of doc moc's posts.

I must admit I still read all the replies (which is more then I can say about other threads).

well done people
Posted by frankie, 6 years ago:

I'm just bitter because I didn't know what you were all on about and I wasted at least 3 minutes trying to figure it out..

I thought you all knew I'm a she?
Posted by Sul, 6 years ago:

I knew!!!!1 And I was having fun before you spoiled it. You'll pay for this. Mark my words.
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

frankie can go to hollywood
Posted by Boudicca, 6 years ago:

*whoooooooooosh
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

Hollywood? So, you're trying the old 'Hollywood Gambit' are you? We'll see about that.

Specially for the Dutch Girl .... Holland Park.
Posted by cal, 6 years ago:

frankie == jeff == jeffica luff
Posted by Sul, 6 years ago:

And she fucking thinks that fucking Mario's fucking is whack.
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

more-frequent postage required to keep info in cache -- this was known but was swapped out due to lack of need and of brain cells surplus to drinking requirements
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

errr... not sure if that works better applied to cal's post (intended) or sul's (lagged)
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

This is subterfuge and diversion because you are all incapable of playing against my superior intellect.

And as Frankie is a Pimlico girrrrrl, she should be more than capable of holding her own (or preferably mine).
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

so are you proposing that frankwumba did NOT in fact win?
Posted by Boudicca, 6 years ago:

Howzit Jeff! Nice post. How's the new job going?
Posted by frankie, 6 years ago:

firstly cal, shhhhhhhh its a secret.. a really rubbish secret

secondly warhead, ewe..

and thirdly, erm very well thank you, i'm one step away from an ironic shoreditch haircut.. plus the news that my old company is going down the toilet was a nice bonus for christmas.

god i love how i can make any subject thread all about me, i think for that alone, i should win the game..
Posted by Doctor Lucid, 6 years ago:

Frankie = Nov = November Eclectica = Rosie = Jess

We all knew that, right?

Hold it! Hold it!

I just woke up, and it's 2 in the afternoon. How? Why?
Posted by Victor Menendezz, 6 years ago:

Damn, am I too late to post a potentially game-winning

Turnham Green.
Posted by Alfie, 6 years ago:

Well based on the fact that the game is called Mornington Cresent, I very much doubt that Turnham Green could be considered potentially game winning ;)
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

Mornington Crescent!
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

It may not be the move that wins the game, but it is insired position play. It could easily lead to a winner on the next mo ..... oh, well done Salti.
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

yes, people, that's three, count'em, THREE lucky winners we've had so far: frankwumbov, (get)alife, and now yours unruly. it's Everyone's-A-Winner Day on iamcal!! everybody! step right up and take your turn to win WIN WINNNNN!!!!!

Posted by Boudicca, 6 years ago:

Yep, SFG is Grimothy. Truly. No lies. Ask him next time he's on. Wait, i'll try and find the thread for you. Hang on. www.iamcal.com/discuss/topi... there you go, that was where he unmasked himself.
Posted by Grim..., 6 years ago:

It's true.
I got bored.
Posted by Grim..., 6 years ago:

But I love the way Brock dropped in his look-at-me "there have been separate discussions about quite how french you aren't, too." comment and forgot that a couple of those 'separate discussions' were with me =]
Posted by Grim..., 6 years ago:

But the backward smilies were bad. Bad bad bad.
Posted by SuperFunGordon, 6 years ago:

They weren't that bad ):
Posted by Boudicca, 6 years ago:

Hi SFG! I've missed you! (;
Posted by Brock, 6 years ago:

That wasn't a "look at me" thing, that was a "take a fucking look at yourself, you freak. Who the fuck would pretend to be, of all things, french..."
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

*tsk*
look at brock
Posted by Boudicca, 6 years ago:

I think someone pretending to be South African. ;)
Posted by WarHead, 6 years ago:

So are we playing round 2, or has the novelty worn off?
Posted by Alfie, 6 years ago:

worn off.
Posted by Boudicca, 6 years ago:

I would love to play but can't. Sorry. :)
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:

Posted by Grim..., 6 years ago:

I found the solution...
Posted by Saltation, 6 years ago:
