mr kastner has passed me a silly chain thing, only not too silly since it's about programming. amy hoy did one too. but i don't have a long-form blog!

So put it in a forum topic, then.

Hi there, just looking around this site to see what its about. Looking for a place to advertise a new website, not sure if this is the place? Can somebody tell me if its allowed to post a link, or is that not OK?
Posted by Miki, 2 months ago:

sure

I've absconded from b3ta/links, in a concerted effort to learn how to code properly. So I've been lurking at the publish section, going through the php articles line by line. Just thought I'd pop my head up and say hello! :)

So I need to reply to this topic with something either witter or relevant for permission to the rest of the site?

You hear me, I want to see the eel!
Posted by masakatsu, 2 months ago:

Hello Miki,

bump, I think we need to post something, just to prove we aren't trying to sell viagra, or inform them that they've won the eurolottery and can they reply to your yahoo account. ;)
Posted by Miki, 6 weeks ago:

yeah I know it's a pain, but we've had a lot of weirdos.
so tell us a bit about yourself and witty and relevant are distinct bonusses
Posted by Meatwood Flack, 6 weeks ago:

Masakatsu - that's 100% correct. Basically Cal has the monopoly on viagra sales and eurolottery tickets on this site; this is just an effective way of keeping the competition out of the game. He's a smooth operator.

I had a feeling this site was a front for a tawdry 419 scam. The clues are in the workthroughs in his articles :)

You are Mr Akamba and I claim my $4,600,000,000 paid into my account of which you will recieve $5,000,999 on successful reciept.

Hi again,
I'm terribly sorry, instead of depositing $5,000,999 like we agreed, you appear to have withdrawn my entire life savings. Simple mistake, if you could rectify it as soon as possible I'd be most appreciative.

I'm posting here because I might get more replies from random people - I have a question.

Is it just a myth that if you leave your mobile phone charger plugged in and the power on but with no phone attached, it still uses power? I want scientific answers and am fully expecting one from salty.
Posted by WarHead, 5 weeks ago:

Yeah, Salty will defo give you one. ;0)

It's a transformer. Transformers work by magic involving coils of copper wire. It's not actually magic but I really can't be arsed.

However, to answer your question, there are two coils of wire. The primary winding is just connected to the live and neutral lines of the mains plug so it forms a circuit even if the phone isn't plugged it. Because the resistance is higher if the phone isn't connected the charger uses less electricity BUT it still uses electricity.

Google for "induction law" if you really want to know about the bits I can't be arsed to explain.
Posted by Miki, 5 weeks ago:

ok excellent, a smart person with a coherent story!

now for round two:

Is it really bad for rechargeable batteries to be charged if they are full (ie. leave them on the charger all the time).
Posted by eatmypiano, 5 weeks ago:

Depends on the type of battery. Sintered plate Nickel Cadmium batteries suffer from something called "memory effect" which is now a phrase used to describe anything that goes wrong with a battery. Fact is all batteries have a limited life span and the way you treat them determines their life. Throwing them out of the window of a train on a way to work limits their usefulness for example.

Also if you're leaving a device with a battery in it constantly plugged in, doesn't that defeat the object? MOBILE phone, PORTABLE computer...

Anyway - depends on the battery technology but anything bought in the past decade or so - no.

Grim... used to have a leet translator gadget. saves you thinking about it
Posted by Saltation, 4 weeks ago:

hey, related to ursixc9's comment re Building Scalable Web Sites:
i was just reminded of this:
www.newscientist.com/articl...
"Massive experiments generate huge amounts of data. We need to find ways to secure it."

cal, if you're bored and would like to leave a lasting and PROFOUND legacy for all of society --human-hacking at its finest-- it occurs to me you're in an ideal position to do so.

basically, scientists generate rather large amounts of data (eg, the large hardon collider in CERN alone is expected to either destroy the earth in an artificial blackhole or generate 450 terabytes of pure raw numeric ascii data) and a few people are looking to find a way to not just capture it and future-proof that capturing and safety-trap its backups, but to facilitate access to it in an ideally platform-/tool-agnostic manner, and also to provide Social/behavioural elements: privacy (BIG/DEEP issue with eg medical data), ranking, rating, protection from vandals, non-B&W treatment of politics-/profit-/bandwagon- influenced "data", etc.

and when i say "a few people", the US govt alone has already budgetted $100m for this project. the EU and the aussies are looking at similar projects.

it occurs to me that you (and say the S3 boys, or google) are in a great position with freakarse skills honed by brilliant heuristic experience to make a SERIOUS contribution to this sort of indefinitely-scalable shared-data problem. with useful social elements on top. this is the sort of thing a handful of geniuses could do and more to the point do WELL, where a myriad of 6-Sigma idiots will simply spunk hundreds of millions achieving garbage.

if it's done well, the whole world benefits. in a serious "we just changed the way people live" engineering/science sense. think: dna. think: physics. (just by way of wholly unrelated example: silicon chips came from a putting-together of a socially-driven "problem" with some truly obscure "pure" research)
and not just now but for the foreseeable future.

flickr's great. but, you know, creating a fundamental step-change in the pace of the entire globe's scientific and medical and engineering endeavours is kinda...
well, call me a sad fucker but it makes THIS geek's eyes water just thinking about it.

just a thought.

i was wondering if anyone would notice that. it always occurs to me when i see it in print, so i like to write it that way.
