wow, happy 8th birthday iamcal.com. Really is shocking where the time has gone.
Posted by syl, 3 years ago:

Cal, I love the fireworks! :D

It's been fun being here. Met some truly lovely and interesting people.
Also by stumbling onto this site, I ended up at B3ta where I met the most wonderful man ever, and he is coming to visit me in August. We are going on a Safari, to Victoria Falls in Zambia, Cape Town, Sun City, the De Wildt Cheetah Sanctuary and swimming with Dolphins in Mozambique. So thanks Cal and iamcal dot com. :D

That's not me, by the way, although I know that's hard to believe.

Nice Fireworks =]
We should have a big party next year. I'll DJ, obviously.
Posted by Meatwood Flack, 3 years ago:

Wow. Nine years. That's a long time. I reckon I've been here about seven or so. Maybe longer. And what good times they were...

was that in relation to the "tulip touch" or the "dinky"?

I Love Arsepuppy,
Best of all the animals!
I Love Arsepuppy,
He's me friend!

fireworks? I just get an error code on the status bar and a load of grey squares appearing, but then I am at work and forced to use IE7
Posted by WarHead, 3 years ago:

Prolly just as well, they make yer eyes go funny after a couple of minutes.

che when did I register?
Posted by arsepuppy, 3 years ago:

Bloody hell! Nice one!

Great to see Moc back - please someone dig out the "Moc Posing With Gun" pic. Shit's awesome.
Posted by Saltation, 3 years ago:

:) those fireworks gave me a brief blank staring "wtf" moment before i twigged
Posted by Saltation, 3 years ago:

cal, are the only changes you made the addin of the following javascript libs?
soundmanager.js
fireworks.js

you may have just fortuitously pinpointed an obscure macosx mozilla "cruft" problem that is exponentially slowing mac firefox/flock/netscape/etc users all over
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

it's pretty much slowing every browser down - fires *a lot* of timer events for the animation. you should it on an iphone :D

the fireworks will disappear in a day or two
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

the other code added is in the footer, starting with <div id="sound"></div>
Posted by Saltation, 3 years ago:

and that's javascript again.

superb, cal: ta. the mac community salutes your sterling contribution in so categorically and precisely determining the definite cause of the problem
Posted by che, 3 years ago:

Fireworks are working lovely on firefox here at home

i'm making some modifications to the site this week

part of that is (finally) merging the several user databases that results in accounts like cal_DUPE1. this might cause you to be logged out, but your password wont change. where you have several accounts, i'll retain all of the details from your currently active account, move all posting under it and make sure you have the lowest user number out of all your dupes (so gary will be 122 instead of 2341).

this only applies to accounts which had duplicate names! i will not be merging alter egos or renamed accounts
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

post numbers should now be correct, including all versions of the site:

www.iamcal.com/users/loud

If you merge alter-egos, that puts:

chay at 16th & 17th for topics (effective 9th)
grim at 4th & 8th for topics (effective 2nd)

chay at 2nd & 13th for replies (effective 1st)
vic at 4th & 15th for replies (effective 2nd)

grim - do you want Grim... and Grim...3 to be merged? Which name would you keep?

and i miss 'RUSS'
Posted by Grim..., 3 years ago:

'Grim...', please. But user-id 9 is nice* =]
I miss a lot of these people. Mass email time for all the loud folk, perhaps?

*especially if this becomes the next Slashdot...

You might want to fix the edit box too - it's a bit wide

Vic wins on the longest-period-of-absence-but-still-in-the-charts. And Salty, a relative newcomer, is second in the topic starting stakes. But how many of these topics did people reply to?

Rosie? Beargod? Foggie? Nov? RUSS?

I'm still very impressed by Gary's ability to pop up on any thread like this after a considerable absense. Or indeed any thread that mentions Mariah Carey.

Too late - he's there at the top...

Which leads me to consider that Gary watches iamcal all the time but only pops up when someone mentions MC or the sun...

Miki - I dont know exactly when you signed up, it was around question 2.17 i think

Also Cal, you forgot to add Uma and Liandle to Syl's count ;)
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

oh, easy - i can just look at their (hidden) email addresses :)

I ain't not no Axeman!

Can you reset the password to my Salman Rushdie account? Can you change it to "fatwa"?
Posted by che, 3 years ago:

hahaha
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

you sure you're not axeman?

the email for salman is white_noise_indeed at hotmail if you want to reset the password, else i can choose one and email it to you (what address?)

we don't need more people knowing the password to your accounts ;)
Posted by syl, 3 years ago:

Haha, those were the days *sigh*
Posted by syl, 3 years ago:

Cal I think I also had Sylvia, Clara and Scrybl. Hopefully that pushes me higher up the loser board. ;) I think I might have been near the top but I spent 3 months in hospital and another year away from the internet.
Posted by Gary, 3 years ago:

Very nice, Cal. I've only ever used the name 'Gary' at iamcal.com, so I bet merging my accounts was quite easy. Just one question, though: isn't my sign up date wrong? I'm sure I signed up when we were both still at UCE... :)

I'm still very impressed by Gary's ability to pop up on any thread like this after a considerable absense. Or indeed any thread that mentions Mariah Carey.

Thanks! I only post from time to time, but I do visit almost daily. :)
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

yeah, lots of the signup dates are a bit screwy. i think i'll try and fix that later today
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

done some more rollups in the 'chart', for syl, reddy and nov. not a huge changes
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

the only users with signup dates before their first posts:

9 Grim... 1116160754 > 960886596
122 Gary 1116434109 > 1002297623
165 reitsma 1116291193 > 1012451306
1150 WarHead 1115108523 > 1065796698
1293 Brock 1115100878 > 1069876919

i guess i kept the signup dates from your second accounts instead of your originals. all 'fixed' now
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

and while i was at it, really old users now have signup dates of their first post, instead of Jan 1st 1970

www.iamcal.com/users/1
Posted by WarHead, 3 years ago:

Hmm, I must have been gauging the lay of the land before I actually posted. I remember some gadgy at my office sending me a link to a thread that he found amusing otherwise I'd prolly never have found it.
Posted by Grim..., 3 years ago:

Yay 4th! IN YOUR FACE, HENDERSON!

If you combine SuperFunGordan with mine, I come in at fifth. Not sure how to feel about that, really.
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

is superfungordan you, grim?
Posted by syl, 3 years ago:

Yep, Cal, Grim was SFG
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

now merged. i'm falling down the charts. jesus
Posted by syl, 3 years ago:

Does your post count only include those on the discussion board or on your blog as well?
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

mine only includes the old blog (which was part of the discussion forum) and the regular discussion forum

it doesn't include the linklog, which would add an extra 2183 posts
Posted by su, 3 years ago:

happy blog birthday
i hope there were donuts
Posted by Meatwood Flack, 3 years ago:

No way! Grim was Supergunforden?

I thought SFG was french...
Posted by Grim..., 3 years ago:

The thread where all was revealed was here: www.iamcal.com/discuss/topi...
But it seems to have vanished.
Posted by WarHead, 3 years ago:

It's all a pigment of your imagination then.
Posted by Meatwood Flack, 3 years ago:

There definately are some non topics in the archives... unless they're part of the secret forum?
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

there are some missing IDs from when the old and new forums were merged together. a bunch of topic IDs changed too. there is no topic 336 in the database
Posted by che, 3 years ago:

Also don't forget the posting black hole which destroyed a large chunk of posts once...
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

i seem to remember that. what happened?
Posted by Grim..., 3 years ago:

Black Tuesday, was it?
Posted by che, 3 years ago:

"i seem to remember that. what happened?"

You tell us!

I think wasn't there some sort of horrible database crash or something, and you got 99% of it back
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

yeah, maybe we had to revert to a backup of the database. so long ago now
Posted by Saltation, 3 years ago:

everyone should backup their memory more often too.

I actually made it on to the "Repliers" chart. Quite an achievement since I don't say much.

Happy Birthday iamcal!
Posted by Brock, 3 years ago:

Fuckola. That's a long time. Apparently, I've been here for nearly 5 1/2 years too.

And, Victor Menendezz is not me. I did have a Vic related account, but I remember it not. Or, at least, I recognise none of the posts attributed to that account.
Posted by Brock, 3 years ago:

Oh, and editing breaks the fuck out of the comment box - it doesn't wrap properly.

YOU'RE SHIT AT PROGRAMMING, HENDERSON. You really need to sort that out before you get a job doing this shit.
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

i checked the IPs, and it sure looks like it was you

as for the edit box - i'm in the process of making the whole site wider (like this page), but not quite finished it :)
Posted by Miki, 3 years ago:

mischief.bound = nov
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

i remember that one, but that account doesn't appear in the top users list anyway
Posted by che, 3 years ago:

"that account doesn't appear in the top users list anyway"

That's because the Pad Diaries were posted on her own blog, not on here.
Posted by Brock, 3 years ago:

Hmmm. I have to say, though, my fake Abe/Vic moment was only fleeting (and, I think, mainly aimed at direct confrontation with Vic*), and I genuinely don't recognise any of those posts. In addition, I could never have been bothered to have made 301 posts under a fake name, nor to have posted under both pseudonyms in the same thread.

How bizarre. Do the IP's match exactly? That's fucking weird if they do, as either my memory is utterly fucked, or Vic was cleverer than I ever gave him credit for!

*Happy days. He used to make me laugh my arse off. I miss him :(

"Someone who understands a nutter like me"

Are they a psychiatrist? ;)
Posted by mischief.bound, 3 years ago:

Miki - remembers. :)

Mischief.Bound = November Eclectica = Novie

Che: Pad Diaries???? I don't remember that one.
Posted by Grim..., 3 years ago:

Goodness. Hello Nov. How's it going?
Posted by syl, 3 years ago:

Hello Nov :)
Posted by Brock, 3 years ago:

Straight in after the psychiatrist post!

HEY NOV! Where the hell have YOU been? :)
Posted by mischief.bound, 3 years ago:

I leave and everyone starts talking about how crazy I am. How nice of you. I would like to think in those days we all had a lot of growing to do and my life back then was crazy as hell. LOL.

I have been living life. I have a wonderful hubby and handsome little boy and another one of the way. I couldn't be happier.

I spend most of my time on Facebook now.

How are you guys doing?
Posted by Grim..., 3 years ago:

Not talking to you now you're married.
Posted by mischief.bound, 3 years ago:

Grim - That is so very silly. :)
Posted by Gary, 3 years ago:

Hey, Nov. :)
Posted by mischief.bound, 3 years ago:

Hi Gary! How are you?
Posted by Brock, 3 years ago:

Hey, that's not fair. We talked about you being crazy back then, too!

We may not be nice, but I think we were certainly consistent.
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

i think brock has a point

hi desi :)
Posted by mischief.bound, 3 years ago:

Brock - you do have a point there mate. I can tell you I am not the same person as back then.

Cal - hello to you as well. What are you up to these days? Why did you leave Flickr?
Posted by Gary, 3 years ago:

Hey, Nov. I'm fine, thank you. :)
Posted by Brock, 3 years ago:

I can tell you I am not the same person as back then.

Indeed. From your posting style and language, you sound like someone completely different, as it happens. Hmmm.

Cal? Have you checked IP's? Is this someone playing silly buggers and pretending to be Nov, conveniently just after we start talking about her?
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

impossible to say. ISP appears to be in south carolina, so quite likely it's the real thing
Posted by Saltation, 3 years ago:

hi nov

I was just looking at the members of this group.

Who are these people? They've all got proper names with surnames and all that stuff. I know who "Steve Thompson" is 'cos he's exceptionally handsome and probably me. And I assume the "Cal" person has something to do with this website.
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

I assume a lot of people know who's who
but for emp: I'm mirjana

Hey ho.
Posted by eatmypiano, 3 years ago:

Didn't want to start a new thread for this so I thought I'd post it here.

Had an interview today for a job as the Systems Admin for a web startup. During the technical test, one of the questions was "Have you read 'Building Scalable Websites' by Cal Henderson."
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

wow
Posted by WarHead, 3 years ago:

That sounds like a trick question to me. Answering 'yes' OR 'no' could easily blow your chances.
Posted by eatmypiano, 3 years ago:

It was an understandable question because they're a web startup currently running on a ZX81 with a 16 RAM Pack.

Seriously, they have big plans so every other question was somehow related to scaling. They obviously think that BSW is a benchmark for how it should be done. Fortunately I bought the book because Cal wrote it, not because it was ever any use to me at the time. And I did read it and it seems some of it stuck. Dunno if I got the job yet though. If I didn't it's because of the shit book by Cal. Should never have bought it.
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

at least they have the RAM extension
Posted by jeffry, 3 years ago:

Cal I name-dropped you in an interview the other day. I feel dirty.
Posted by che, 3 years ago:

was it a KFC interview?
Cos I imagine they would have been pretty impressed to know you hang out with 5-Buckets-Henderson
Posted by jeffry, 3 years ago:

if I don't get a job soon I'll remember that for my KFC application. Does his name hold any weight in burger king?
Posted by che, 3 years ago:

yeah, about 40 stone

;)
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

omg, so i went to burger king 3 days ago - haven't gone in several years

they had a transformers burger called the quad stacticon. 4 burgers, cheese, bacon & barbeque sauce. win
Posted by Miki, 3 years ago:

steve is very jealous
Posted by che, 3 years ago:

i saw adverts for some weird BK 6 pack burger thing that was somehow transformer related.
Posted by che, 3 years ago:

I just remembered, it transformed from "a burger" into "coronary heart disease".
Posted by cal, 3 years ago:

hehehe
Posted by beargod, 3 years ago:

I still have _DUPE1 at the end of my name :P

Facebook, i am simon brumfitt

burger kings are virtually non existance outside of major towns and cities in the england

why do people appear and disapeer on this all the time?
