To be honest, finding acceptable foods is much harder than you might think, for the last few days i have had Four sausages for breakfast, a tuna salad (urgh) for dinner and a large amount of chicken for tea. (with optional chunks of Red Leicester when the urge takes me) and nothing but water.
Posted by beargod, 11:26, 31st July 2003:

I usually drink nothing but water, Its the only thing I find that refreshes me
Posted by Foghorn Leghorn, 11:28, 31st July 2003:

As I work in a book shop we sell The Atkins Diet Book and every time a stick thin woman buys the book I feel like telling her she really doesn't need it.

Ketone is the chemical your body releases on this diet (similar to the smell of nail polish remover?)

SO what happens when you finish the diet, and you've lost all that weight and you start eating normally again? Methinks you will put the weight back on, unless you want to eat mainly protein for the rest of your life, urgh.

I mainly drink water and all sorts of tea, jasmine and green tea is yummy and I rather like peppermint too.
Posted by mjt7420, 23:13, 31st July 2003:

Man I love pasta and bread. and what is the conversion from pounds to stones... around 14ish? and how did tea get into the adkins diet thread

Posted by beargod, 09:21, 1st August 2003:

Dude, you might want to buy us a teapot and some tea, cos neither kerry or me drink the smelly stuff
Posted by arsepuppy, 09:36, 1st August 2003:

Bloody hell, you must have an extremely hypersensitve sense of smell if you think tea stinks.
Posted by Foghorn Leghorn, 09:44, 1st August 2003:

Tea doesnt stink..coffee does...oh, and the underside of BG's man breasts!
Posted by beargod, 09:45, 1st August 2003:

You know it

I can smell tea off from a mile away, but yes coffee is alot worse
Posted by arsepuppy, 09:54, 1st August 2003:

But tea doesn't really have a strong smell. Having said that, my sense of smell is sketchy, it comes and goes, so what do I know. But ground coffee (for coffee makers) *stinks* of demonic shit.
Posted by beargod, 09:57, 1st August 2003:

That is very very true, I hate that smell, especially when your parents make it on a sunday morning and wake you up by making you throw up
Posted by Foghorn Leghorn, 09:59, 1st August 2003:

Not to sure what the actual smell of demonic shit is, but i shall take your word for it.

Tea is truly the sweet nectar, ambrosia of the gods,
I could sip from the sweet sponge of tea all day.

Coffee is quite nice. Diets are stupid.

But then, I've never got above 10 stone, ever.
Posted by mjt7420, 23:03, 3rd August 2003:

I like coffee and tea both and I find their smells to be quite nice. On another note, When I went to England the family I was staying with asked if I wanted coffee or tea and I said tea and they couldn't believe it. They thought that American's hated tea and loved coffee. Is that view widely held?
Posted by Redmaiden, 00:38, 4th August 2003:

yes the view we have is that Americans don't drink tea ever in fact in all U.S. programmes Americans only drink coffee or coke beverages.
Of course we all know TV depicts true life...

Posted by Foghorn Leghorn, 13:47, 6th August 2003:

I bet you do.

I heard a good story about a guy who went to the Fantasy Bar in edinburger during his lunch hour. Now the guy in question has a lovely beige suit on, you know, 'the man from delmonti' style and colour. Anywayz, he gets himself a lady, goes into the back for his private dance. The girl is fantastic, totally naked rubbing up and down his leg, shoving her breasts in his face..fantastic! Until he steps outside said establishment and finds that the clatty bitch hasnt wiped her ass properly and he has small skid marks on the leg of his lovely suit. Oh how do you explain that to (a) work colleagues and more importantly (b) the wife!!!

true story brought to you today by Foggie.
Posted by jlittle, 13:47, 6th August 2003:

I'm doing OK so far - lost 3lb yesterday - eating is fine, quite hungry, but I know that'll go - drinking plenty of water and been to the gym exercising.

arsepuppy - "health experts" are always going on about it - they talk complete tosh though, they also say the MMR is safe, when it isnt.

MMR..thats what lorne sausages are made of (i think)

health reports are a load of shite,

red wine is good for the heart, red wine is bad for the liver
beer is good for the brain, beer is bad for the kidneys
garlic is good for the heart, garlic can cause melting in vampires
fish is good for the brain, fish is full of evil chemicals which will shrivel your thyroid
alcohol causes cancer in white mice
nicotine causes cancer in white mice
mobile phones cause cancer in white mice
chocolate mice cause cancer in white mice
has anyone wondered if white mice are prone to getting cancer?

You could spend your whole life chasing your tail trying to keep up with what the latest 'medical study' shows, IMHO medical studies have found that if research teams don't keep coming up with 'health revelations' then they don't get any more funding to continue their pointless research.

Go ask my friend if it's safe, and ask her son that has Autism - explain how he was fine before having the MMR, but almost straight after having it his behavour totally changed. Of course, it must only be a coincidence.

Also, on the Atkins stuff - show me some evidence that it's not good for you - the diet has been around for over 20 years, but if you ask the "experts" for evidence of the bad effects it can have, they are unable to show any.

didn't they proove recently that the MMR was safer then the seperate jabs or something, or was that a dream?

No, there has been reports saying it has no link, but there has been reports saying that there is. There was something out a few weeks ago saying that there is no increase in autism since the MMR came in, just that more people can regonise the signs of Autism now.
Posted by arsepuppy, 11:41, 14th August 2003:

But surely a crash diet which cuts out important nutritional groups is, by nature, a touch dodgy?
Posted by arsepuppy, 11:43, 14th August 2003:

And just because something's been around for 20 years, it doesn't make it good all of a sudden.

It's not a crash diet and it doesn't cut out any groups for the whole diet - in the first two weeks it cuts out fruit - but you can add this back in at a later stage.
Posted by Sul, 11:52, 14th August 2003:

the diet has been around for over 20 years

a good length of time to study the long term effects then no?
Posted by Victor Menendez, 11:53, 14th August 2003:

Carbohydrates aren't cut out, its a REDUCED carbohydrate diet.
Posted by jlittle, 11:54, 14th August 2003:

Exactly

Do you really believe that? Do you really believe that it is affecting 100's of children, and seeing a change in them straight after, but every single case of this is a coinsidence? Do you really think that the "experts" are always right?

If the answer is yes to any of them, then you are more naïve than I thought! :)

The yank keeper has terets (sp?) which I think could provide us with some funny moments over the coming season.Boltons signing of Jardel is a cracker..fuckin great striker but i think you will still get rode.

defensive over what AP? (and please dont say diets)
Posted by Victor Menendez, 12:02, 14th August 2003:

We have taken three points from old trafford twice in the last two seasons, They have a new line-up whereas with the exception of Jardel we have a settled line up, Djorkaeff should be fit for the game and United are famous for starting slowly.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i heard that the child of someone who objected to the MMR jab later became critically ill through one of the diseases the jab protects from. There is no such thing as a 'safe' vaccine, its like anything in life, you pays your money and you takes your chances.

A top half finish would be nice, but like my dad always says, fourth from bottom is like winning the league.

Well, in some ways, there's no such thing as an objective opinion.. every single opinion that anyone holds is by its very nature subjective, and may or may not correspond to some greater "unknowable objective truth".

So, you'd be inclined to believe the statement "MMR either causes autism or it does not cause autism", cause that's a necessary truth (and also a tautology). However, to make a statement that "MMR does cause autism", or indeed one to the contrary, is a subjective opinion based on empirical evidence. Personal experience does count as empirical evidence, but unless you were undertaking a proper study of the effects of this particular vaccination, based on a large amount of reliable evidence, I wouldn't suggest that any opinion based on personal experience is a very reliable opinion.

And then of course, any 'evidence' based on what's in the media is a very subjective experience, as we've already established that there is a large gap between what is "objectively true" and what is written in news sources.

Personally, I haven't been keeping up with all the MMR news or the Atkins diet, so I don't really have an opinion about it. But I do like subjective and objective truths. If a subjective truth isn't a contradiction in terms, anyway.

I thought Autism was caused by genes, then the mmr might be the trigger, but I am making this all up in my head so don't beleive me :)

Your not wrong at all - I am against not giving children Vacines - however I do think that if there is so many cases of Autism where people say that the child changed straight after the MMR Jab, then there is a case for bringing back the single vacines - I think that at some point in the future this will indeed happen, until then, parents like myself will have to go private to get it done - what's a few hundred quid compared to a childs life?

Sul - there is no point shouting about it - there are many cases where the child has developed Autism after having the MMR jab - that is well documented, not just in the media, but in reports - I don't really mind if you believe me, or the experts, what I was saying is that the experts are not "always right" - I'll give an example that is relivent to this thread.

On the BBC 6 o clock news about a week ago, there was a few minutes dedicated to the Atkins diet - they talked to someone that had been on the Atkins for quite a while - who was eating healthy - having vegtables and having meat and other foods - this was the Atkins still. Then they had a "diet expert" on the programe - he went on saying how bad the Atkins can be for you, etc - he then said that the woman on the program was not on the Atkins as the Atkins tells you not to have vegtables products and also mentioned that you can have all the dairy products you want - and as much of them as you want, on the Atkins.

If this suposid "expert" had read the actual book, he would of seen that none of what he said was the case - there still hasn't been any reported heart problems that he mentioned, even after 20 years of being about.

My point is - the experts are not always right, and I certainly won't let me health, or my childs be risked by what they say.

Are you not contradicting yourself here??

"The experts, media and reports aren't always right, but they are if their ideas coincide with mine"??

Nope - if anything it puts my point across more - not all experts are right - so what of the two sides is gonna be wrong - my opinions are based on what I have seen, and how this coinsides with some reports which I have read.
Posted by chandler, 13:54, 14th August 2003:

as opposed to someone who read opposing reports, has seen maybe dozens of kids wandering about who have had the jab and are fine

No shit - no-one has ever said that the jab is gonna affect every single child, but do you not think that even if it only affects a handfull of people that people should be given the choice of a single vacine.

Having said that they are "experts" thus are more clued in to the subject than you or I.

Your point being? Two sets of "experts" have opposing views - so which is right? How do we tell that?

I guess being a parent changes your views on things - Before Kieran was born I said that we would give him the MMR and that I wasn't concerned at all - then now it's nearer the time I have read many, many, articles and reports and think to myself, what if?

If Kieran was affected by it, it would affect him for the rest of his lifem he wouldn't necasarily live a life that me and you have, it's a bad disability. Is it media hype? Who knows, but what i'm saying is that after seeing the affects that it could cause, even if we have no solid evidence either way, i'd rather not do it.

You're opinion is both incorrect and correct at the same time until someone opens the box and lets pavlovs dog out. The problem is you were not giving an opinion. You were flat out telling us that the MMR isnt safe. Which YOU don't know.

Foghorn - the MMR is a jab that children get when they are young - it's for a conbined vacine for Measles, Mumps and Rubella (I didn't spell them right) - doughts have been raised over how safe it is.
Posted by chandler, 14:16, 14th August 2003:

I have to admit if I had a child I would be scared for its wellfare and would try and avoid anything that would hurt it, but then again you also have to take chances and you have to learn. One way or another all (or most?) kids have to have the vaccines but it should be the parents choice, not the Government/Experts, like teachers spanking should be allowed if it is not child abuse
