pardon my french when they are speaking plain english. And they probably don't even know how in the hell to speak french or where Paris is? I mean seriously. I know why we say kaaazoontight(spelling?) and bless you, but pardon my french?
You say kaaazoontight because you are the only American in Germany and you sneeze then you can communicate with the Germans. And if you didn't close your eyes when you sneeze then your eyes would pop out. (nifty, huh?) and you say bless you because your heart stops beating for a period of time. And why do people believe that so and so can cure hiccups? Nothing cures hiccups. EVER EVER EVER. arg, but pardon my french?

hicups cannot be cured.

as far as pardon my french, i think it's just supposed to be an insult to the french language

I was always under the impression that you say "bless you" because of an old superstition of your soul tyrying to escape. As for your heart stopping beating, that wouldnt have been realised until fairly recently and I'm sure they say "bless you" in "little house". Or I could be wrong

people are stupid full stop, they'll say anything.

One day someone will realise that the word literally refers to writing something down rather then being exact. Dumbass's all of them, me included.

Am I allowed to say, "Pardon my French." If I DO speak French and DO know where Paris is?
Posted by Jenn, 01:08, 2nd February 2002:

Yes. It would be okay. It probably is a very old superstition but that is why it is said now. I don't know. I just think it is nifty.

are there any other sayings of dubious origin?

it's cold enough to freeze the balls off of a brass monkey.

i thought it was "gesundheit"..
and people say "pardon my french" when they are saying something offensive..so, since french is considered a beautiful language, they are being sarcastic. and even if i'm wrong, i will probably always think of it this way. *sigh* it's too late to change...

Time for my useless trivia to come to use!
A brass monkey is something that used to be used to store/deliver the cannon balls on ships, when it was very cold the brass would contract and the monkey's balls would fall off.
Sorry, I'll go find something more useful to do now.

Why do people (especially parents) always say "Now this is gonna hurt me more than it hurts you"??
IT NEVER DOES!!

I saw a funny card once, it had a picture of a dad about to give his son a bit of a beating... (actually now that I think about it, it was a bit of an awful picture to put on a birthday card, but anyway...)
and the dad's saying "Now this is gonna hurt me... etc etc"
and the kid's thinking "Only if I can tip you backwards so you crack your head on the coffee table"
hahahahah!! .....uh... I guess you had to see it for yourself.
:B

PS- actually ended up buying the card for my dad's birthday... heheheh
