i'm after feedback about the new design. what do you hate? what do you like? what's hard to find? what's hard to see?
your feedback is much appriciated

hate all of it except the fact that its good for work :-p
its just too minimilistic in my opinion.
I liked the little boxes that kept things apart last time. This isvery good work, but it just seems to run everything together. I am more of a visual person, so I like a lot of graphics and stuff.

no graphics, just more tables to set everything apart...

It looks nice, but it has a low useability rating.. lots of text, not enough visual clues.. not very intuitive to use.. When we get used to it, it'll probably be fine, but right now I think we're all floundering on a steep learning curve.

I agree with everyone else really, bring back version 4!

i've changed the default skin.
you can select the one i just changed to by going to your login page (
here)
I've not much to add, the topic boxes you had before made it much easier to leap around and see what's going on. The lack of structure in this design is quite off-putting

I think you've gotten your response Cal, seems like a LOT less posts since v5 launched..

hmm..it doesn't seem so "forum" like I agree, but discussions are easier to get to from the front page.

suzie, if you don't like it, go away.

that was a bit harsh

i'm a harsh kinda guy. but if you're here for the design, then go elsewhere.

I didn't say I was, I was just pointing out that it seemed like people weren't posting as much since you switched versions. I also didn't say I didn't like it, I said it was harder to use. I was under the mistaken impression that "your feedback is much appriciated" meant you actually wanted honest opinions.
But whatever. I can tell where I'm not wanted.

~checks the IQ thermometer~
I think it's dropping.
~gets a scarf~
Now then, the design: I actually like it, aside from the pixel raped "iamcal.com" in the top left. Looks a bit shifty I'd say. Not as brand-goodness enriched as the old gif boxes.
I agree that the posting structure is a bit less user-friendly than it was, seems sort of sterile. Other than that, nada to bitch about. The beat goes on...

I like what you're trying to do. Minimal is good. But I thought the last edition was spot on. It isn't all bad, but v4 was all good. Mixed reactions, but you still rock the code :)

Peter hit the nail on the head - "sterile" is exactly how I would characterise the new look. The last one was more "minimal".. on the other hand, I'm impressed how clean the site looks without any img tags. (and loading times are through the floor! ;)
Now that I have had time to get use to the new style, I like it alot. Cal you did an awesome job.
I think the main text column is too wide
Newspapers aim for six words per line - this is the ultimate in readability
You don't need to go that far, but a bit narrower would be nice.

it's still, as ever, a work in progress.
the width on this page (the thread replies page) was just too much. i've added the generic 'sidebar' to it now. i think it feels a little more sensible...

I like the top, and the bits under the top. Its groovy, I like it, not sure why though, it just seems to work for me.
Dandy work.

wooooooo! i SO want one of those - they have a spectrum emulator built in don't they? or maybe i just saw one that someone had made...

Worth every penny spent on it, its fab!
They do indeed have a speccy emulator built in although its a bit of a con. You have to pay to download the a game and its 50p to use it for 3 days then it expires. I currently have bomb jack, enduro racer, ms pacman and tetris.
