Here is my theory - the sniper is an ex Navy Seal who left because he couldn't pass Sniper Training, and is now pissed off at the world.
Allow me to explain why.

He once left the police a card with a picture of Death on it, with the words "I Am God" scribbled across it.
In the film Navy Seals the Sniper was called 'God'. That is clue number one.
In the film, God did not pass sniper training and quit to become freelance instead (which, of course, there is not so much call for in real life). Clue two.
Um...
Oh, and the Sniper-killer can't drive either - that's another clue.
How do I know that? Because the only thing his shootings have in common is that they all happen around cars.
So. Er...
Yeah, that's about it. Sounded much better last night when I was drunk.
What do you think?
Posted by arsepuppy, 10:30, 17th October 2002:

Its all just a case of Wesley Snipes making a literal joke of his name and having some japes asyoudo. You're probably right though. Or maybe he fancies himself as Jane Seymour in Live and Let Die
Posted by Grim..., 10:38, 17th October 2002:

Ah come on. We all know it's been caused by the killer playing too much Silent Scope in the arcades, and the violence involved in computer games nowadays caused his line between reality and gaming to become blurred...

I have just read an article about the Sniper-Killer.
Apparently he left that 'I Am God' card because he wanted to be found.
No he didn't.
I he had wanted to be found, he would have written:
"I am Chet Geblowski. I live at 32 Bad-man street, Washington DC" or something...

Can someone answer me this: Can a civilian buy a sniper rifle from a gun store (with a licence or whatever)?
Posted by jlittle, 11:40, 17th October 2002:

Yes. He could well be using a Hunting Rifle which cab be bought over the counter in many shops like Quickmark

My mum works for John Lewis and she has to carry all her stuff to work in a clear bag so that security can see she hasnt nicked anything.

soooooo

Maybe they should take this stance in the States for a while. When they see somebody carrying around parts of a sniper rifle they can grab him.

Simple if you think about it

Everyone in America should wear bullet proof vests and bash hats. That would put the sniper-man off. No one could get killed by him then.
Posted by Rosie, 13:20, 17th October 2002:

I am aware this could become slightly expensive, so maybe they could create makeshift bullet proof vests out of a really thick baking tray or something and a bash hat could be made out of a normal woollen hat but with metal reforcement build in to the inside.

Good thinking, eh?
Posted by Grim..., 13:33, 17th October 2002:

Or maybe they should stop handing out guns over the counter...

Nah!
Posted by Rosie, 13:38, 17th October 2002:

Thats not gonna happen is it? If a nutter wants to get his hands on a gun, hes gonna do it one way or another.

Metal reinforced wollen hats are the way forward I think.

And baking tray jumpers.
Posted by Grim..., 13:49, 17th October 2002:

I've got it! Give everyone a gun. That way, the sniper shoots someone, and gets torn to bits as everybody else empties a clip into him.

I AM THE CLEVEREST MAN ALIVE!
Posted by November Eclectica, 13:52, 17th October 2002:

I live in America and right near where the last shotting occured.

A bullet proof vest won't save you when you get shot in the head and that is what this guys has been aiming for.

If we allow our selves to get scared and stay inside then he wins. I hope they find him soon.

This subject hits very close to home for me.
Posted by Rosie, 13:57, 17th October 2002:

Now, thats a bit violent - Grim...

How about big umbrellas made out of light-weight bullet proof plastic?
Posted by Rosie, 13:59, 17th October 2002:

If there were a sniper in my neighbourhood killing innocent people at random, I'd be scared shitless. I feel for those people.

Just imagine pumping gas into your car one moment, and then lying next to your car dead, not knowing who or where the person was that killed you.

They've got to catch this bastard quickly or many other innocent people will die. I wonder if this is another Al-Qaeda terrorist attack?
Posted by Rosie, 15:15, 17th October 2002:

I think its just some jumped up kid with a gun.

I agree its a terrible thing. You have got to be seriously f**ked up to go around shooting people like rabbits.
Posted by cal, 15:16, 17th October 2002:

erm, that's a very odd conclusion gary

i wonder if it's you. or my mum. they would both make just as much sense. this isn't terrorism, it's not organised crime, it's some loon.

I don't think it is, Cal. It's a perfectly reasonable one given recent events.

but they eat their poos again so that is OK

You are aware that there still hasn't been any released proof that the Al-Qa'ida had anything to do with the destruction of the twin towers, pentagon or the Bali night club, are you not?
Posted by chandler, 15:46, 17th October 2002:

Gary. I would tend to agree with Cal and Grim... How does this bear any relationship to any of the terror attacks by Al-Qaeda? I think that pretty much ALL the shooting sprees in the US have been home grown good old all American boys.

It like the Bali bombing. within minutes it was "oh must be Al-Qaeda",

so apparently all crime is in some way linked with Al-Qaeda all of a sudden
Posted by Rosie, 15:47, 17th October 2002:

a friend of mine got broken into a couple of weeks ago. given recent events, is it reasonable to assume it was al-qaeda?

Anyone think it's more that coincidence that America got hammered on 9/11 and Bali got done on 10/12?

I don't. And I don't believe that 9/11 was meant to represent the emergency number either. It's just a date.
Posted by chandler, 16:51, 17th October 2002:

Rosie: Yes, and the history books would talk in great length about the Great Cheese Wars of 2002/3. Where the lactose intollerant all perished, too weak to survive the onslaught of high velocity milk based projectiles.

and no one will forget the e-Dam Busters
or the Brie-dom Fighters
Posted by chandler, 16:53, 17th October 2002:

Grim... : you're right, its nothing but coinsidence. I was reading an article that was saying that the culture of that area does not attach significance to repeating dates or figures in the same way we do in the west. Thats why I wasnt expecting any attack 9/11 this year cos it just isnt something that they would think to do.
Posted by Gary, 17:00, 17th October 2002:

Of course I am aware there is no proof that the shootings are linked to Al-Qaeda - I didn't say that - I said I was just wondering, speculating, making a conjecture, call it what you want just don't all jump on me with silly jokes and pedantic replies. If this continues, here and in other threads, you shall find me no longer posting here anymore.

You are aware that there still hasn't been any released proof that the Al-Qa'ida had anything to do with the destruction of the twin towers, pentagon or the Bali night club, are you not?

I think it's a foregone conclusion - and even if it isn't, it's bound to be a groups linked to them. And yes, the 9/11 and 10/12 thing is believable - it's a typical Al-Qaeda trait - timing.

" it's a typical Al-Qaeda trait - timing."

what??!! timing, and planning events is VERY different from attaching silly significance to dates, which is a very Western trait.

oh, the last time I looked at the news the sniper had hit 9 people, the next time I checked it was 11. spooky 9...11 must be Al-Qaeda.
Posted by Gary, 17:10, 17th October 2002:

I said: "I wonder if this is another Al-Qaeda terrorist attack?" I did not say, "this is definetly Al-Qaeda".

In response to Cal calling my wondering 'odd', I then said: "It's a perfectly reasonable one given recent events." And it is. It's America, they're Americans, it's yet more violence, yet more people being killed. I did not say it was Al-Qaeda.
Posted by Grim..., 17:14, 17th October 2002:

Hang on - so America was non-violent before the ninth of September last year?

WAKE UP!
Posted by Gary, 17:14, 17th October 2002:

Timing/planning, whatever. I know what I meant, even if you didn't! :P

I'm pretty sure the USS Cole got bombed on 10/12 two years ago, though...
Posted by Gary, 17:16, 17th October 2002:

Hang on - so America was non-violent before the ninth of September last year?

I have not said it was Al-Qaeda and I never said America wasn't violent before 9/11. You're putting words in my mouth - please refrain from doing so, it only makes you look silly.

"It's a perfectly reasonable (wondering) given recent events - it's yet more violence, yet more people being killed."

It may not be what you meant: Perhaps it's your English that leads to trouble.

(Not wanting to cause offence): Are you foreign?
Posted by Grim..., 17:30, 17th October 2002:

Sorry - a better way to phrase that would have been:

"Is english your second language?".

I'm not so sure I should give you guys a longer stick to poke me with, but here goes - this is from CNN:

"U.S. investigators plan to question al Qaeda detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, about the series of sniper attacks in the Washington, D.C.-area, government sources said today."

Well, I did wonder, didn't I? However, I should paste the rest of the CNN quote:

"The sources emphasize there is no current evidence linking the shootings to any terror organization."

I haven't been following the news much. I tend not to watch TV or read the papers.
