unfortunately the cat kept digging them up and weeing on them so they never grew into proper carrots.
At home I used to grow Kiwi fruits, spuds, grapes, tomatoes, apples and some other shit. Only the bananas fucked up. Think we did melons once too.
I'm busy with work.
Rosie: Your letter went out today. I opened it back up and put some pictures in there for you.
I love to read also.
I like to read ingredients on cartons of milk. They usually say "Contains Milk". This never fails to give a satisfying sense of security.

bg, the stories were heavily chopped for the films otherwise they would have been about 4 hrs long each.. and to be honest they were too long as it was... besides, i never thought the books would adapt too well to film because (for me at least) a lot of the appeal is the way the story is told and that doesnt come across in the films... not to mention Daniel 'wooden' radcliffe's performance...
Posted by
jeff, 17:09, 30th June 2003:
he's not mentioned in an obvious way.. gah, its too hard to explain, just read the frikkin books and you'll understand...
to be honest i was more pissed off with rob when he told me that 'someone' would die, ages ago.. its like being told before you watch the sixth sense that there's a really good plot twist.. so you look for it and it kinda ruins the experience (i guessed that in the first five minutes of the film and consequently didnt enjoy it in the slightest)..
Except that the Sixth Sense was shit and the twist was none more predictable ;)

playing devils advocate for the sake of it... i hate when something's popular people immediately renounce it so it looks like they have an opinion.. you can't deny the mass appeal of these books, they may be kids books but they're still very entertaining and enjoyable to read...
anyway, in the end they are just books and just films and they dont really matter at all... unless of course you're j k rowling in which case they matter a lot because she's minted! did you know they put her name as J. K. Rowling on the books so that people wouldnt know it was a female author.. it was to encourage boys to read more... so says my brother's friend who works at bloomsbury..
i'm awf now
tara x
I'm not renouncing it because it's popular at all. I just don't see the appeal. Nothing more. Especially when adults read them. It seems a bit, well, odd really.

I kind of agree with BG.
It's nothing to do with hype/mainstream oversaturation. It's the fact that it's a series of books aimed at children. Dunno how the radio comes into things.
I agree that the Hobbit is a kibs book, but i read it when i was a kid. But i havent read any harry potter so i can really comment, i was only having a laugh up there ^.

AP he called me an idiot, GET HIM :)
Why is everyone reading bloody Harry Potter now. There are other (superior) kids books out there.
I've never seen *any* adult read a Roald Dahl book on a bus. Shame really. Why one and not the other??
You could argue that the Hobbit could be classified as "classic literature". Will Rowling's books ever be called this, hype aside?? (genuine question)
Posted by
beargod, 14:37, 2nd July 2003:
I want to see if they do become a classic or just fade away to the east and gather dust
My (possibly unjustified) Potter-hatred is more based on the group of hipster-twat adults who read it as an "ironic" thing (*ugh*), which led to the books being reissued with "adult friendly" cover art, so you wouldn't feel like a dickhead reading a kid's book on the tube.
Regular Kiddy Version:

Ah yes, of course. Let's laugh at people because they are reading a book, that's such a funny thing!
SALES AREN'T EVERYTHING!!
Example: Stephen King sells a lot, and while some of his stories can be ok, he simply cannot write for shit, thus making him not classic.
I am going to start reading Harry Potter, once i finish whatever I am reading at the moment, they better not be pish. If they are, I am going to blame everything on jlittle.

The singles charts for nowadays is selling more then it ever has will these tunes be classics in the fufture? Very unlikely

I never said that Sales were everything, however when was the last time that you saw a book shop opening at 12am so people could get the latest novel? It's made shit loads of children read a book and the majority of the people that say its shit or boring havn't even read the books
The singles charts for nowadays is selling more then it ever has will these tunes be classics in the fufture? Very unlikely
Actually.... you're wrong. Chart sales are worse than they have ever been. Hence the "revolving door" nature of the number one slot these days.
In the 80's for example, you had to sell a fuck of a lot of singles to get to the top. Now, it can be as little a 15,000 units shifted (possible exaggeration of figures).
Posted by
beargod, 15:09, 2nd July 2003:

OK Then, let's use the Singles chart as an example.
When was the last time that shops all around the country were opened for the release of singles? Last time I can recall is for the Elton John song in rememberence of Dianna - do you think that that will be a classic? very likely.
Posted by
beargod, 15:11, 2nd July 2003:
oh ok sorry AP, I'm just thinking, there hasn't been a decent Number one for ages, and at the rate the singles are going there never will, I just assumed that they celebrate these bands so much that I thought they sold alot :(

just cos a couple of shops open at midnight because a book has loads of hype.
couple of shops? funny, i thouht it happened all around the country - as ap said, sales are not everything, but I was using it as an example to show how popular the books have become.
You also think they are for kids, however books 4 and 5 are actually rather dark.
Now before you continue saying how right you are, I have one question for you.
Have you read the books, or at least just one of them?
If the answer to that is no, then you may aswell shutup now, as you really arn't qualified to say how bad a book is, and how it's not going to be a classic without even reading it.
Posted by
jlittle, 15:15, 2nd July 2003:
oh ok sorry AP, I'm just thinking, there hasn't been a decent Number one for ages, and at the rate the singles are going there never will, I just assumed that they celebrate these bands so much that I thought they sold alot :(
No, that's because children get more pocket money nowdays, and there are more "big" music stores. The Singles market has changed a lot, which is why the kiddie pop type stuff always gets to number one.
The (fucking TERRIBLE) diana version will never be considered a classic any more than the turgid original (except in the minds of Daily Mail readers/ Royalists). Elton hasn't made a good tune since 1978 - FACT.
Posted by
beargod, 15:18, 2nd July 2003:
yep sorry about that Jlittle aswell, I am still not backing up my theories :)
Also, in the past, singles *never* entered at number one. It was always a case where a tune would "burn slowly" and rise up in time. However, you could put this down to the changes in the way they are marketed today.
Enough of this!
Lets talk about something else...

damn, missed a good arguement... Jlittle I'm now halfway through harry potter having not watched tv for days.. I like reading.
All my friends who've read it really enjoyed it despite some of them being reluctant to start reading the series a few years ago... I infact remember laughing at my wife on holiday in 1999 when she was reading it by the pool but I soon changed my tune..
I read Harry Potter when commuting a few summers ago with the 'kids' cover and I wasn't slightly ashamed because I was enjoying it too much. It may be a kids book but Rowling's style is getting more sophisticated as Harry (and his original readership) gets older and he's 15 in 'The Order of the Phoenix'! You lot are talking like it's Judy Blume or something!! As for not seeing adults reading Roald Dahl on the train, its most probably because they've read them already as they have been around for a long time.. he died 13 years ago! (i was well upset)
anyway, um, arsepuppy and beargod, you SUCK ;)(i winked!!1) Foggy, you dont suck so much because you're gonna read them :D

beargod, it's in Leyland, Lancs - a bit far away from sunny Tunbridge Wells but I do agree, house hunting sucks and prices are too high!

You know the cheepest place to buy a house at the moment is in Middlesbrough. But bugger me if I ever want to live there again.
plus it is also a little far to commute to tonbridge everyday. 4-5 hour trip that would be :(

Hey Sul and for later Hey Vic
looked at a one bedroom house which is quite far away yesterday. It was beautigul, but after buying it we had to disguss the commuting to both of our workplaces. etc.
we also saw a 2 bedroom flat which was nice and really big, 5 mins walk away from high brooms station. It was really big, but dark, abit too close to Upper grosvner road/busy road, didn't seem to clean an area, he hadn't tidied it and it needed alot of decorating. But we are looking at that again on tues cos it isn't too bad
