why the votes for Shakespeare? he hasn't advanced the world in any really useful way. if he weren't born, someone else would have been the focus of literature (chaurcer?)
Posted by
arsepuppy, 08:37, 30th October 2002:
cal: Yeah, but shakespeare DID have an impact on today's society. If you read his works, you will find that on top of being a HUGE influence on literature since, he also advanced the English language and coined many phrases and stuff that have become part of our language today. If Chaucer were to be our main literal focus, we would possibly still be speaking in a more primitive way as seen in "The Wife of Bath" etc and have a less articulate and more starched language, possibly still using all that "Ark at thy Quente" stuff. Having said that, this is all bollocks if you believe the Christopher Marlowe Conspiracy Theory ;)

Same goes for Lennon. Wrote a few good songs, but only with McCartney due to the two-way quality control filtery thing between them. With the Beatles he co-wrote some good stuff, but his solo work was self-indulgent hypocritical arse (Case in point: Imagine), with the execption of a few tunes. Also a shit in real life both to his family (i.e Cynthia and Julian) and to his colleagues (His taunting of Brian Epstein and his sexual orientation)...
Anyway, enough of that... where's Tim Westwood? He needs his bigups! ;)

apparently only 30,000 people actually voted. meaning you could get in the top 100 with less than 300 votes. Michael Crawford fan club all submitted. therefore he got to 17. Its all a big farce.

Darwin is winning? I'm sorry, but although I respect he's theories and he's collections... well I cant wait to see them. I really can't! But one theory and a collection of fucking fish heads is nothing compared to the 3 laws of motion!

Yes Matt, this much is true. But it steps down to what you think is more important. Its true that anyone can write... christ I can write, not very well but I can. To be a genius in the realms of physics takes someone of great standards, a great person. Hence "great brit". Stephen Hawking should be up there too. That man deserves a medal for everything hes done. He's been through a fucking shit-load of problems, yet he will still come out with people remembering what he has done not the fact that he's a disabled person doing this.
Sorry. does everyone get what I mean? I realy cant word it right now.
But IMHO, and it isnt too much as you know, but to figure out the mysteries of the world is a far better craft than to induce them.

chandler: perhaps, but i think i disagree. he's much more likely to be remembered as sul suggested - just a great scientist - and history will gloss over his disability. perhaps. but then look at turing.

Still don't see why everyone is up Darwin's arse all of a sudden. What has he done apart from coming up with a THEORY? (not even a discovery like Newton did). Seriously though... Darwin as Greatest Briton Ever??? wrong wrong wrong.
In fact, looking at the poll, he was the least influential towards society today, and yes, that includes That Parasite Diana (or "Not My Princess", I'm Welsh btw).
Is it because his theory involved monkeys? Cheap heat mongerer... :)

or did I miss the point.
Im worried about this line:
You can't be greatish Briton, you fool - you're Welsh!
But i'm more worried about the inclusion of Bob Geldof and Bono, while worthy in themselves, they were both born in Dublin, which as far as i know is not now, has ever been or ever will be, British

Well, that of course suggests that physics is intrinsicly better than Engliah Lit. And, not just that, but anyone can write in the same way that anyone can do physics. I mean, man, I could probably do one of those circuits with a switch and a battery and a light bulb, or drop two things of different weights, but I'm no good at fractals and time dilation. Simiiarly, just about anyone could write some stuff, but I don't think they'd be very good at the whole Literary Canon business.
So yeah. English Lit is blatantly better than Physics. Vote Shakespeare!
