Can anyone suggest a decent site hosting site thats cheap and reliable. I am hoping to design a site good enough to put up for people to see...

Any suggestions would be appreciated...

www.supanames.co.uk
I got the cheapest, and it came with a MySQL database and PHP capabilities as standard. I have never had a problem with them and run both www.chayamtion.co.uk and www.chaymation.co.uk/peeps off the same one.

easyspace.co.uk are reliable, they're a bit more expensive than supanames, but there are no bandwidth restrictions if that kind of thing bothers you.

I am with www.dataflame.co.uk - their support is second to none.
I was having trouble FTP'ing at about three in the morning so I sent them a mail asking them to change my ftp username so that it didn't have an underscore.
I was about to turn in when I got the reply - they'd done it.
It took them two minutes, including the time for the emails to send.
Now that's not bad.

Anyone got any suggestions for what I should register my domain as?

earthworm: I'd recommend:

www.runningwolf.com

the site I'm in charge of redesigning:

development.gurusnetwork.com

is hosted there as are an awful lot of people I know (including myself once I get the time) and the guy who runs it is very approachable (I have a lot of demands and he hasn't told me to sod off yet). The site isn't actually very informative but if you email the boss (pat@runningwolf.com) he'll supply the details (tell him the Emperor sent you and it should get his attention - they are busy moving servers).

Could I recommend that whoever you host with that you register the domain separately as you can keep felxible with your hosting and avoid getting stung. Someone recommended this firm and they are reasonably priced and I've never had a problem with them:

www.000domains.com

It might end up costing a bit more but you might be grateful in the end (I've heard too many nightmare stories ;) ).

If you want a name suggested then perhaps you might want to let us know what you were planning on doing ;)

I haven't decided. I would quite like a journal on there and some links. Just a bog standard thing. I don't have the programming knowledge to create a site like this one. Not by far...

I would have quite liked a message board on there as well... But again, I don't know how to code one. DAMN MY LIMITED KNOWLEDGE!!

I'll have to give it a little more thought...

dont use www.aletia.com or www.jaguarpc.com who bought them out... their deal was too good to be true... lots of features, nice friendly staff but unfortunatly, servers that never stay up for more than a few days!
