Nice one, im going drinking on saturday.
Come to think of it, that march is probably the safest place to be. nobody blows up their own allies. (Apart from the Americans)
P.S. No offence Nov :)

I was reading a book last night and a chapter talked about Biological warfare and one of the only countries to use it has been, surprise surprise. America. in 1971 they flew over cuba and sprayed swine fever in an attempt to destabilise that naughty Castro's economy. half a million pigs had to be destroyed.

it must be real early?
It is 6:36 AM, yes very early. I have my coffee, so I am happy. I was awake at 5:00 this morning because my lover wouldn't let me sleep in. *pout*
what do you do at work Nov?
I am a research analyst. I gather data for proposals and projects and also maintain the company data base with resumes, project summaries, etc.
I also lend a hand in coordinating proposals, setting up meetings, editing, formatting and all that jazz.
So, a little bit of everything. I've been with this company for 7 years. Started out as a receptionist and worked my way up to now. What do you do?
I design web sites and multimedia. I have been for three years now, started as chief monkey boy and still am.
6.30 start is a bit nasty.
It is a nasty start, but I am a morning person. On Saturdays and Sundays I am up and about by 8:00. I don't get to bed until about 11:00 at night and that is if I don't go out.

AA heat seeking one that would blow up a plane that was taking off or landing. but they dont really know. maybe it is all just PR. they are going to be there for days. there is no confirmation that there is any such device at all.

jeff, no offense, but i think your friend is an idiot.
As much as some people dislike Blair, it is proposterious to say that he has planned any of this to create fear within the public.
If Blair hadn't put the country on alert and got the amry to patrol the airports, and some idiot blew up a plane, no dought he would be critised by the SAME PEOPLE for doing nothing about it.
He is trying to stop the terrorists, and being advised on what to do by the Secret Service, they, in my opinion, seem to be doing a good job at the moment.
Ditto, which backs up my belief that there is no financial benefit of being in credit these days, its all about the overdraft baby, i'm finding life a constant exercise in blagging and how far i can push my bank.
On the topic of the whole Heathrow thing I find the mass public reaction to this thing really interesting. I think this is probably the first event in my lifetime that i've seen such widespread cynicism over potential propaganda.
I'm in two minds, part of me can't help going with the cynicism. I would honestly have thought that if they knew something serious was going to happen, the first we'd hear about it is when a more targetted team had dealt with it.
Such a significant military presence has to have some kind of symbolism behind it, this could mean its a psychological deterrent to the terrorists, or a gentle reminder to the public of what being threatened and being on a state of alert means.

Men held near Heathrow
Police have arrested two men near Heathrow Airport under the Terrorism Act 2000.
The men were detained in the Hounslow area of west London by anti-terrorist police.
The incident is not believed to be connected to the mass security operation at Heathrow and was thought to be a precautionary measure.
Police are believed to have stopped their car during routine checks.
The men are in custody at a west London police station.
They are not believed to be linked to any plot to attack the airport.

hello. i am jess's friend who has weird and radical views about the government. I didn't want to sign up to post a reply here, but I felt I had to, if only to waste some time. Also, I just wanted whoever it was who called me an idiot to realise that they may have made the biggest mistake of their lives. I still think that the government are hugely overplaying the terrorist threat with their tanks and other such penis substitutes; I'm not disputing that there is a threat, only that the best course of action (deploying secret service agents) wouldn't have quite as juicy a propaganda value. In case you haven't noticed, the proportion of the public now believing that there is a link between Osama farty pants Bin Laden and big bad Saddam has shot up, even though there really is no evidence at all. In fact Osama even slagged off Saddam (I belive he called him something like a socialist infidel) in his latest message to the masses, but I guess that bit wasn't the bit that big Tony decided to highlight in his speech.

There with my internet introduction out of the way I would just like to say a couple of things.
'Roughly as stupid as being willing to blow yourself up, i would imagaine'
Stating that people are stupid just because they hold convictions stronger than your own is idiotic. After all people with extreme views can be more intelligent than you, and are not even neccessarily irrational, or hot-headed.
Secondly I would like to concur with Shane's point about there being no evidence for a link between bin Laden and Saddam. Saddam leads a broadly secular dictatorship, whereas bin Laden is a misguided Sunni extremist.
Secret service agents would have been the most sensible way to go about this. If a perimeter around Heathrow was to be created light tanks are no use, I am sure many of you will agree that people are much better at creating a blockade than machines, which have a high 'person-density' and poor visiblity and thus guard a limited area.
This was nothing other than manipulation of people who don't know any better.

walk around any part of london and check everyone and i'm sure you'll find a bunch carrying sub machine guns and the like. not exactly a huge terrorist threat compared to everyday happenings...
I'm not saying i believe this, but for the sake of conjecture, you could note how it seems a little convenient that a random pops up with a grenade to give Blunkett a neat "I told you so" sound-bite.
The guy went through customs hence he wasn't re-boarding and if he was he would have to be checked again, so although he had the opportunity to blow up a plane for the entire distance of his journey at least from Barbados to Gatwick he instead decided to walk into a major airport holding it. I mean from a logistical sense alone if their was an intention to damage the airport it would be easier and presumably more effective to just walk in with it rather than traveling from Barbados, and if the intent was to bring down a plane then why didn't he blow up the one he was on.
In the governments defense though, they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. Blunkett stated "it reinforces that we really do have a problem because that's the other thing people have been saying - that we are making it all up" and its true, the discovery of this does give the government motive, but likewise when you hear him say that you can't help questioning the convenience of the whole affair.

oooh thanks for rising to the challenge, james is it?

there, i've said it, and you know what? I feel much better for it, thankyou!!
and as regards to the guy with the grenade - i bet they only caught him cus of the increased security (i.e. things like this regulalry go unnnoticed), he was probably just some mentalist, or maybe he just has a lucky grenade. who knows? He was hardly part of some massive terror operation was he? Did they chase him down the road with some tanks before he decided to give up?
Public hysteria is a very ugly thing, and it is usually fuelled by government, either purposefully, or by incredibe lack of judgement. Surely the best thing to do in times of threat is to have a very credible, very trained but secret protection agency? Public panic only means that terrorists don't actually have to do anything to achieve their goals: to make us afraid, and to distrupt our lives. We can't do anything about this, so why have the government done their best to scare the shit out of us? Are they doing it on purpose or just incompetant? You see, I do believe there is a real terrorist threat, and it will only increase if we do bad things to people in other countries.

"i bet they only caught him cus of the increased security"
That's the whole point - the increased security is oviously doing its job - even if it *is* a common thing, do we really want people bringing in hand grenades into the country.
I can see him in the police station being interviewed
"Sorry guv, it was just my lucky grenade, i carry in just incase!"
he might not be associated with al-quenta (spelling?), however it shows that there could be problems with security and that having the extra may work in stopping a tragic iccident happening.
Also, the guy was coming from Venezuela, changing at gatwick and flying out to bangladesh.
plane blows up out of venezuela = no-one gives a toss.
plane blows up out of gatwick = everyone gives a toss.
I dont trust a word the government say, they see us as a crop to be milked, our money and skills and pay little regard to our needs and wishes.
