Am looking for a web-based FTP service that actually WORKS... I don't have home access to a pc anymore, so this is my only hope of updating and continuing to develop my wap n web sites (short of moving to a free server, but that would be a waste of my £40) - anyone any advice, tips or URL's?
Posted by
Grim..., 13:54, 10th April 2003:
Um... Internet Explorer does FTP - just type in the ftp address, a box comes up asking for your UN&P, and then off you go...
Posted by
Ana, 13:57, 10th April 2003:
I've tried that, but can't get it to work :o( - problem is, my ftp hostname is the same as my website address lol

I've found web2ftp.com pretty handy on occasion, thanks to the firewall at work.
Posted by
cal, 17:06, 10th April 2003:
just type this into internet explorer:
username:password@my.host.com
it's like MAGIC!!!!!
Posted by
Grim..., 17:12, 10th April 2003:
What Cal said.
I can assure you that your ftp hostname is not the same as your website address =]
Posted by
Sul, 17:14, 10th April 2003:
Sure it can be, it only resolves the IP address. It's only the port no' that makes the difference.
Posted by
cal, 17:19, 10th April 2003:
can be? it NEARLY ALWAYS IS, although it can also be something else too. like iamcal.com can use any of the neuron domains as it's ftp host, and it can also use any of neuron's raw IPs
Posted by
Sul, 17:20, 10th April 2003:
so there you go :p
Posted by
Grim..., 17:31, 10th April 2003:

When can a FTP address be a HTTP address?
Posted by
Grim..., 17:31, 10th April 2003:

Yes. It is possible to have the same name for http service and ftp service.
They just use different ports and of course a different type of protocol.
ftp usually uses port 20 and http uses 80

beargod, 22:04, 10th April 2003:
what port is email then?
Posted by
Sul, 22:06, 10th April 2003:
110 for pop and 25 for smtp usually
Posted by
cal, 22:22, 10th April 2003:
pedant mode: ftp is port 21 for control (and used to be 20 for data)
a iana full list is here:

I think MSN works on 1080 as default. Someone (cal) correct me if I'm wrong.
Posted by
cal, 08:23, 11th April 2003:
yahoo: 5050
aim: 5190
icq: 5190
msn: 1863
all but msn also allow you to connect to their servers on port 80
(1080 will be your firewall sul)
I really don't know what anyone is talking about here. Not a clue.
Which is funny because I had a phonecall last night from an old friend saying:
"Look, I'm having a bit of trouble with my computer, I think I have to reformat it or something. I thought you'd know what to do, being a computer geek and everything"
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"computer geek", I ask you, I struggle with turning the bastard thing on!

I'm using the local library's copy of IE 5.5, maybe i should wait till school restarts, and try it out on one of their computers?
Why is that when I ask for help with my webpage I get made fun of, but when other people ask, they get help.
*pout*
I did find out what was wrong with it though. Our hosting service is shitty, so we are changing it.
Actually i made fun of both of you :)

bonjour
Thank you. I wanted something that best represented me. Although I have to place a bat in there somewhere. I am getting a Tattoo on my lower back soon. It is going to be a Bat. I just have to come up with the design first. I want something Gothic with the Bat being the center.
So, if someone wants to email me some ideas I will take them to heart and who knows your design my end up being my Tattoo.
Posted by
beargod, 14:30, 11th April 2003:
Yes i will cos I am the worst drawer/designer in the world
