OK guys (and gals)
Can anyone recommend a good hosting place. Basically im looking for a few more megs of space than i have right now (I have 35Mb) and also i would quite like to register the occassional domain name on a whim as it were. Anyone recomend any good places for either of these things.

Factors to consider -

1. currently my site is hosted with www.supanames.com and i have one domain name. I could get more space and more domains through them, but i suspect they might not be the best place.

2. I'm relatively poor. Like compared to Cal i'm virtually penniless. but then most people are i guess. So im looking cheap but good.

cheers people.

Here is what I did.

My DSL service is about $39 a month, then I use NOIP for the DNS because I have a dynamic IP (arg!) see my web page for info on NOIP.

A router - $100 (I only need this because I have other PCs that I use besides the server)

A cheap 400Mhz PC for about $100 - then you can put as much disk in it as you want. I put 30gb in mine for about $150.
Install linux - free or very cheap. (less than $15)
Downloaded apache webserver - free
Download the No-ip updater - free

so about $250 to start, unless you happen to have an extra PC to use as a server.

Hey Chay...

I am hosted with pickaweb.co.uk. They are pretty good and fairly cheap... They have a great service where you can talk to a techie online in a sort of live chat arena and they are really good at after sales service!

I pay £12.00 per month for 100 meg of space (or 7.50 a month for 50 meg of space) you can either pay monthly or yearly. You get a domain name of you choice in with that.

With the 100 meg deal, you get 2 databases, 35 pop email accounts (web access) and a really easy user interface to administer things... They host PERL, PHP and all the usual...

www.pickaweb.co.uk - you know it makes sense... {cheesey smile}

but you see at the moment i pay about £13 a YEAR and get 35Mb of space and a domain name plus database and PHP and all the rest of it. and e-mail too.

Plus i've never needed to talk to anyone cos its always been fine

plus im not getting ADSL or cable or anything cos i live in a little village that will never get cable.

so i guess i'll just pay £5 for the year and get an extra few Mb of space.

cheers anyway.

I use these:
www.uh-hosting.co.uk/services.asp
500mb web space & 15GB bandwidth a month for £22.00 a year. I've had no problems with them.
edit: actually the php's more expensive, it starts at £44, just ignore me

Check out PowWeb. They're pretty cheap (about a fiver a month), offer loads of space and huge bandwidth. I don't (yet) use them myself, but a friend of mine does - they've been rock solid almost all the time, and the one time he had a problem (for 36 hours or so), they gave him six months' free hosting as compensation.

No bother.

This took me a while to find, but I knew I had it somewhere: if you're looking for the mega-cheap option, and don't have much traffic on the site, you could also consider 34sp. Their basic deal is only 15 quid a year, although you have to pay extra for various things, so if you use loads of the "extras", it can end up working out just as expensive as someone who offers plenty of space/bandwidth in the first place...
