Why would I program in PHP over something like ASP?? Someone asked me and they wouldn't accept that I just wanted to learn how... so I want a really technical answer...

Depends on preference and server - ASP is generally only avalible on Windows servers (Chillisoft of Apache ASP is about, but not many places have it). .NET is apparently a better, more strctured language than php.
At the end of the day, I code in php because i have my own server, and rather than pay shit loads of money to MS, I can build a server for free (software wise).

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I program in .NET everyday and it is just annoying, Although I have not touched ASP .NET I bet Microshaft have changed that too so you have to learn a new language before using it

big bonus of php is that there are more programmers out there, so you're not producing stuff which can't be maintained. other than that, it's faster to work with (given experience in both), faster to run, multiplatform, hugely expandable (without resorting to server plugins) with stacks of free example code everywhere and a huge community. and it's a full programming language, whereas ASP still feels like a toy

hehe. for the web, php is my current weapon of choice. for non-web stuff, i'm a big fan of perl, and find ruby quite interesting.
of course, parrot will be "the next big thing" (tm)

to use perl on the web you have to first pick a templating language (and no one uses the same one), then spend alot longer writing code to glue the templates to the logic. then you have to make sure you're using CGI or CGI::Lite, or whatever falvour of the month is. then you have to start worrying about permissions. and check that strict and warnings are on. etc etc
perl is a great programming language, but it can be too flexible when it comes to the web. everyone uses different wheels and you end up having to support applications you can't understand, using modules that aren't supported. it takes longer to do simple things.
hmm... I think I'll still try to learn PHP... It also helps that there are people like Grim and Cal who are willing to answer questions. this place and
www.hsmx.com/gf5 are both great learning tools!! Like I have said before, they don't teach PHP at the college where I work otherwise I would learn from here... but thats what you get for being whores of Microshite...

Isn't perl slightly faster then PHP once everything is set up and running

it depends. yes and no. depends on configurations and what you're doing
so, in summary, that's a stupid question
