Dude - he has stiched up his eyes and mouth - a bit different to a hunger strike. Why should we give in to his demands - what next, someone going into a bank and saying "Give me loads of money or i'll stich up my eyes and mouth so i can't eat or see"?
"can't say I really want someone with a mental problem like this in my country"
Yes we must remove all self harmers!! Crazy bastards! Especially this one after all he's only been through torture that out luxurious life style and mindset can't even comprehend and faces certain death upon return. Wuss.

Yes I think that is certainly the next logical step. Fear of torture and death always leads to bank jobs.
Yeah but to say he should be thrown out on the basis of that is a bit fucking Daily Mail though. There are so many more (legitimately) fucked up people in this country (rapists, murderers etc.). Are they getting deported for this. No.
The kurdish guy is acting in fear. What he's done just proves the extent of this.
ILBM is on the mark here, I think. I was thinking about self-harmers too.
Abas Amini, 33, has been on hunger strike for a week and doctors say he could die within days.
I find it strange that people do it, the IRA used to be big on hunger-strikes, i can't understand why the prison wardens didn't say "Ok, starve yourself. save the taxpayer the cost of keeping you in here"
I don't really understand the whole hunger strike thing, but then again I haven't experienced life in his shoes.

They'd only deport him if the country that he was from was safe again.
I'm sick to death of people like this coming to our country and spending all our money - when I lived in Tunbridge Wells I moved in with my girlfriend, who moved down from Lancashire - and she was unable to claim any money from the DSS because I was earning - even though we were not married, and even though she felt wrong asking me for money (as we had just moved in together).
I'm not saying I don't want any assilum seekers in this country, however I do wish that the goverment could make the decisions without people like this trying to force them to do so.
They are deporting him to CERTAIN DEATH. Uk doctors have confirmed the scars he bares from torture sessions. And they are deporting people to Afghanistan now which is so far from safe it's incredible. The place is a total mess and arguably more dangerous than during or before the war.
Taking all your money!! What a load of ignorant shit. Sorry but it really is. People don't sow their faces up for a few quid. The immigrant community in the UK puts more money into the economy than it takes out FACT. So if it makes you feel better why not imagine it's them supporting assylum seekers and all your hard earned tax goes towards bombs for Iraq.
The government were making the decision it was just going to be the wrong one.

If we're talking about facts, maybe you should research it a little more - a good friend of mine is a laywer (sp?!) that works with Asalym seekers - it costs us a lot of money. As I said, we would only deport him if it was to somewhere that is now declared as "safe" and I think it is completely wrong for him to try and presure people into making decisions, whatever the situation.

What do you mean? Loads of innocent people died, and Bush has a headquarters for the upcming 'Oil War'.
www.observer.co.uk/review/story/0,6903,9...
I realise it's not as short as Daily Mail articles but it might be informative. What was that about our noble government? Maybe you should do any research what so ever. Just an idea.
I know assylum seekers cost us money I said that the immigrant population adds more than it takes. You do know the differance I assume? Why not ask them if they mind their tax supporting assylum seekers? Does it cost us as much as a new Wembley? Or the Millenium Dome? Or dropping billions on Iraq (although of course this shall more than pay for itself). I don't think it does you know.
Yes the government do make good decisions you're right. Invading Iraq was not one of them. You do remember we were told it was due to a clear and present danger posed by Saddams WMD? Where are they? Whose rebuilding? Is it Bechtel, Haliburton and a number of their subsidiaries? Why yes it is! Did an independant analyst declare that these US companies did not submit the moast competitive tenders for contract? Why yes he did. Have america decided to retain control over post war Iraq's oil interests? I think we know the answer to this too.
You are also correct that I should research more cause more reading and more understanding is the only way to stop from becoming a fool that believes what ever you are told on the 10 o'clock news.

I would imagine he learnt in Afghanistan where they do actually have quite a few cars. Well only 7 and three are broken maybe he learned on a donkey? ;)
I'm not saying there are not problems. There are problems with assylum and big ones at that. However, the fact that this man has sown up his eyes and mouth has nothing to do with assylum in general. He is obviously desperate and in need of help.
"The immigrant community in the UK puts more money into the economy than it takes out FACT

Immigrant citizens of the UK from Pakistan, Bangledesh, African countries, other asian countries etc pay more in taxes and the like than they claim in DSS and benefits (i forget the link but i'll try to find it). Therefore why not ask them? After all the government funds Wembely and how many minorities will use that?
Nothing good came out of the war? we stole a shitload of oil. Result!
I think you might be confusing economic migrants with illegal immigrants.

Yes I know they are but the issue is slightly more involved. It is a worldwide problem but the issue here is not the number coming in but the number of bogus claims not going out. I fully support my tax going to help these people and if more is needed to help support the genuine claims and improve the effectivness of the system at combating dodgy claims then so be it I'd support the tax rise too. No new DVD for me two weeks out the year boo hoo.
I also believe that we have an obligation to help them. The biggest numbers of asylum seekers last year were from Iraq, Afgahnistan and Zimbabwe. Two we have bombed to shit and one we stand by and watch as the same number of people Hitler killed in WW2 extermination camps are about to be murdered. Hell we even play cricket with them! In my opinion after our actions, or in-actions in these places we owe alot of people help and support. They have a right to demand answers from us.
There is a general moronic view that asylum seekers are poorly educated, money grabbing and sly which is utterly false for the majority. If we helped to integrate instead of treating them like an underclass a large number of the problems that require money would disappear.
"note to everyone: look look i've kept out of this argument! hooray for me, im really making progress. :D im not even annoyed by the thread! wow im in a fantastic mood! :D "

Read the one entitled 'Rebuilding America's Defences'. Couple it with the statement made in published reports by Rumsfeld that America needed to facilitate regime change in Iraq in order to ensure it's continued energy security and see what you get (i'll try to find the rummy report).
I know what Saddam did. He is a lunatic and the world is better off without him. That does not equate to the war being a good idea. Particularly the way in which the UN was circumnavigated and the lies that were used as justification.
Don't let yourself be fooled, regardless of the outcome which remains very much to be seen, that the US and UK did it all for puppies and christmas. We did it cause we had loads of cash to gain from doing it. No other reason was even on the cards.
If it was for the love of humanity then one of Blairs advisors wouldn't be on the board of a Glasgow company that sells oil equipment to Senegal where ethnic cleansing is going on in order to access said oil fields. The US wouldn't support Israel with $4 billion a year when Israel break more UN resolutions than Saddam ever has. I suppose Nicaragua, Guatamala and Chile were all for the cause of peace also.
The US and Uk are on top cause we're the biggest shit bags. Nothing wrong with that essentially it's just how the world works. What is wrong is us believeing we're benevolent and wonderful cause we're not.
Don't let yourself be fooled, regardless of the outcome which remains very much to be seen, that the US and UK did it all for puppies and christmas. We did it cause we had loads of cash to gain from doing it. No other reason was even on the cards.

Thats not how society works though Grim. Our elected officials which represent the people of the country have the compassion to want to help these people. Sure there are problems with the system but all systems have problems. If you don't like the way the system works then vote to try and change it. Unfortunatley that means voting for a loony fringe group as even the Tories recognise that many asylum claims are genuine.
The attitude of 'send them all home' and 'they're taking our jobs and money' is just a simple solution for people who don't want to or can't understand the situation.
Saying we should sort out problems at home first is a cop out cause there will always be problems at home.
Grim, ah, thats rather cool..i might do that.

ILBM: I know that's how it works, none of us like it, do we? Could you imagine if we
did get to choose where our money went? =]
However I disagree fully with the statement "Saying we should sort out problems at home first is a cop out cause there will always be problems at home."
So?
We should fix those problems as much as we can before we start accepting 'lum Seekers. I find it remarkable that it is easier for a Seeker to be housed than it is for a homeless person.
I also think that housing these people is a ridiculous waste of time - if we want to help them we should sort out what is going on in there countries rather than offering a temporary solution to the few.
We do help homeless people too. It's not an instead of but as well as.
Obviously we can't choose where the money goes aside from every 4 years in a polling station.
Sorting out the problems (which we often helped to create) in their countries is not easy. Afghanistan is far from safe and the infastructure is gone. This was a vibrant, exciting and modern country prior to 1979. Iraq is going to be a mess for years to come. I'd be suprised if we see a fully functional democratic party system there in our lifetime! So we are trying after a fashion but meanwhile these people need help. I and most of the people in this country want to help them.

I was racing my mate to be first in the cashpoint queue on Friday and I had to jump over a homeless guy who was sitting on the floor.
As I did I shouted "'cuse me Homeless Dude!". One of the girls who was out with us said "You can't call him that!" and I was like "Yeah I can. He knows what he is."
Anyway, she leapt onto her horse and started spouting off about how we should treat them with respect.
I informed her that I called him Homeless Dude because I didn't know his name and it was his most obvious feature. I also told her that this was why, for the first month or so of knowing her, I called her 'Breasts'.
Anyway, I dropped £2 on Homeless Dude and she didn't give him any money, and that pisses me off.
Oh, she did ask him what his name was though. He winked at me and said "Homeless Dude."

"But the asylum process has been difficult for Mr Amini, who at one stage was denied some benefits because he refused to move house."
!!!
MOVE HOUSE IF THEY TELL YOU TOO, YOU UNGRATEFUL BASTARD!
"Where do you get the idea that most of the people in this country want to help them?"
The fact that most people voted Labour, Lib Dem or Tory all of whom have asylum policies of reform but continued support. Anybody who didn't vote (or at least destroy their ballot) should stop whining.
Yeah he should have moved house. Difficult sometimes though. If the situation was reversed and you were in a strange place and had maybe made a couple of friends you wouldn't want to up and move again either. I think if we agree to help in the first place then they should be given all the rights of anybody else in the country. People who lived in council housing used to refuse to move all the time.

And what other choice is there? I've said already that I don't *want* to kick out all Asylum seekers from the country - I just feel that there are too many cases that are not genuine, and I don't think the country should be BLACKMAILED by people such as this bloke that has sown up his eyes and mouth - what kind of message does that send out? To me, it seems to send out a message that it is OK for all Asylum seekers to do something fucking stupid that will keep them in the country - what's next?
I
want to help people, but I want people to claim Asylum the right way, and in the correct country (not just come to Britian because they think they would be better here than a country such as Spain, for example).
Until the govenment sort problems such as these out, more and more people will be voting BMP because of one reason - no-one else will have the guts to do something about it.

Him.
The UK has a stable/slightly declining population so no worries there.
I realise there are other policies in these parties Grim but if you vote for one of them you are supporting ewhat they stand for. If you don't like it join your party and try to change things. Vote BNP if you want but you'll just be voting for a bunch of, i believe the phrase is 'lower class vacuous scum' ;) .
Agreed if it all ran properly it would be sweet. If i was coming here from Afghanistan or Iraq I'd be tempted just to disappear into the woodwork when I saw the level of hatred leveled at me. A progrma has just started in Scotland where by asylum seekers are going to be put into jobs in health wok and manual jobs. The reason for this is that there are hundreds of jobs available in these areas for whoever wants them. And yet still high unemployment. Curious.
Many of these folk are qualified professionals (most actually as in many cases ALOT of money is required to make it out of their countries) so why not let them practice? We need doctors for the NHS yesterday and we have a whole load of doctors sitting about claiming benefit? Crazy. Is this because your average person wouldn't trust a qualified doctor who happaned to be an asylum seeker? I think so. See we could also be helping ourselves. It will be interesting to see if the Scottish scheme works.
If you want the problem to be more evenly spread about in Europe then it's easy. Vote Lib Dem, strengthen ties with EU, support the European constitution and there you go. Better than the burying your head in the sand and hoping it goes away the BNP advocate.

Aw, but we've just got over the Big Brother thread.
Basically, you'll all sit and preach on the 'net about how you think we should be sorting out the asylum seekers and letting them have jobs because they have to be skilled workers to earn so much money (the fact that some of them sell their own daughters or become hitmen for a while to earn the cash is soon forgotten) but you have probably never come into contact with a group of them trashing your village, right after torching the multi-million pound complex with medical facilities and shops that we built for them.
As ILBM said, most of the people that get here are rich, but unfortunaly, that doesn't make them 'nice people'.

That's it, that is EXACTLY it! It's not the minority!
My friend who worked at Yarls Wood was spat at and called a 'Nazi Bitch' by the immigrants - not just one or two,
but by nearly all of the men and some of the women.
They held the English people in contempt we didn't house them 'instantly', and that the stories they've heard about this country and it's unlimited help for the bloody people weren't true.
She was beaten up once as well - it's just a joke.
These people then stole more than
fifteen cars from Thurleigh and vanished.
And yet we keep letting them in.
where do you propose they go grim?
Posted by
Grim..., 15:27, 29th May 2003:
I propose we help them in their own countries.
Why can't they go to Spain, or France, or Italy?
Oh, because those countries have more stringent rules on who gets asylum.
Goodness, what a good idea!
Posted by
Grim..., 15:28, 29th May 2003:
And before someone pipes up "how are we meant to help them in their own countries" - I don't know, damnit - I wish I did.
But letting them into this country is a useless waste of time and money - what happens to the rest of them when this counrty is full up?
It is bloody so a minority! I don't believe for a heartbeat that every asylum seeker your friend came across snarled and spat! What rubbish. The ones who do get nasty should be dealt with as and ewhen it happens. We can't help them in there own countries because we installed brutal dictators who make their lives hell and then we bombed the shit out of them. Its OUR fault. We are responsible.
The majority of Americans I have met have been somewhat arrogant and very ignorant of the outside world. Does this mean they all are? Of course not!
Again these people are coming form lives you and I can't even begin to imagine because our lives are so charmed and rich. All they want is help.
Its OUR fault. We are responsible.

Mind you, I'll bet it gets confusing soon - because you think that most of what goes on in the East is our fault, so do you agree with the attack on the Twin Towers, which was a (bad-mannered, admittedly) attack on the way the countries are being treated?

No, but it's widely known that
most of them are, which is what I said in my post above.
Grim - I'm not sure if we do, I'm working so I haven't really got time for anything other than a quick look for statistics, I'm not inclined to believe the scum when it claims that we're taking all the refugees that no where else will. I did find that according to the UNHCR we actually had a lower population of refugees than France and considerably lower than Germany in the last year stats had been put on their website (1999). They don't have data for Spain. But I'm interested enough to have a proper look later.
1) We draw a line in the sand (literaly) to define the border between Saudi and Iraq. Ignoring utterly the tribal and cultural boundaries that have been implace for thousands of years.
2) We've already 'liberated' the country once in 1917 and promised to keep it free and for the people.
3) We stood and watched as Saddam rose to power. We stood and watched as he escaped execution and fled to Egypt.
4) We stood and watched as he exectued all oposition when he siezed power.
5) We supplied him with chemical, biological and standard weaopons through the 80's. He was our goldenboy. We loved him. We, the UK tax payers, are still paying for weapons sent to Saddam under Thatcher.
6) When he did what we had trained and equipped him to do we bombed his country and imposed sanctions for 12 years that not only included weaopons but also medical supplies and basic manufacturing equipment. Teh economy was destroyed beyond repair.
7) We went along for the ride when the US decided to invade Iraq because Donald Rumsfeld advises that "Removing Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq is imperitive to ensure the future energy security of America". In the process we tore the country apart.
Nope your right I can't find a single shred of responsibility there. Sorry I was wrong.

I heard that Germany took more than us too - but think about how much bigger Germany is than Britain, and how much richer it is (or at least, was in 1999).
And the Sun employs more people than all the other papers in Britain, and has been sucessfully sued for libel less times than the Guardian, so labeling it 'The Scum' because it reports the news in a simple manner for people to understand is, IMO, unfair.
For instance, it has the best political section of any paper that's out there (IMO again).
Grim; No the WTC attack was disgraceful. What that has to do with asylum seekers I'm not sure. Oh no wait I see it there all terrorists aren't they.

"And, just out of interest, the girl who worked at Yarls Wood was a government re-houser, so I guess that does make her an expert. "
Fair enough. My best mate works for a political consultancy and deals with the issue directly on occassion. He is more wide read on the subject than anybody i know of. He says the problem is not the people but the way our system tries to function. So which expert do we believe?
Posted by
Grim..., 16:03, 29th May 2003:
Both, because they are both right.
It is the people and the system.
The system fucks them about and (especially after what they have been led to believe) they fight back.
It shouldn't. They shouldn't.
I'm not saying that nothing should be done, I'm saying that what we are doing is bullshit and it doesn't work and we should stop doing it and wasting everybodies time.
Thats a bit harsh! We're not full of shit. Discussing these things is the only way any progress is made at all.
A few years ago before I took any interest I thought that any and all asylum seekers were welcome and they were all great and we should give them all what they want and live together happily. Now I know it's not like that.
I don't think Grims a dick for what he says we just don't agree.
Yes 1917 was a long time ago but what we have just done in Iraq will effect the country for the next 100 years. Thats just how it works.
