I did consider that, but I've had 3 months of hell playing about with Redhat on a desktop.

Go for the Mac, every time! In truth it depends what you want to do with it. If raw power is your thing you'll be better off with the Dell. If you want elegance and usability, along with a stunning OS go with the iBook, though there's a warning attached to that, you might find Windows even harder to use once you get used to some of the nicities of OSX.
