In my hometown, there was this big news story.
At 6:00AM a mother had her nine year old boy, who was severly disabled, in the back of her car, a large ford expidition, and the child only had on a "Pampers" and a blanket, and he was sleeping. the mother stopped at a pay phone , and left her car running. Some one stole the car with the kid in it. Later they found the car, but no kid.
I personaly think that the mother staged this for some strange reason. This poor child can't even walk or speek. What do you think???

noone should ever leave the car running and a kid in it when they are going away from the car. thats just stupid

it probably wasn't very wise. presumably she was using a phone in a position where she couldn't see the car, leaving her disabled child asleep in a running car? pretty irrisponsible

pretty fishy.....

No one should ever leave a car running anyway, i thought it was illegal to leave a car running on a public road.
Posted by beargod, 09:50, 13th June 2003:

why would it be illegal?
Posted by chandler, 09:56, 13th June 2003:

cos its bad

to leave you child unattended when it is unable to look after itself should be illegal, but leaving your car running shouldn't, it that persons own dumb fault if they want to get their car nicked

Bit of a dumb idea - maybe in a situation like this that would help - but what do you think mothers and fathers of babies do - keep looking at them ALL day and never leave the room for a second?

"looking at them ALL day"

no, but they were OUT in a CAR in PUBLIC, they werent at home in their secure house, she left a child in an unlocked car with the engine running whilst she went to make a phonecall. that fucking irresponsible. its fucking INSANE.

there is a difference between unattended in a secure home environment and unattended in an unlocked car with the keys in.

I don't know, to leave a baby unattended on its own could do anything, the worst thing is kill itself and yes jlittle there is a reason everyone tells you to keep an eye on your baby and don't leave it unattended, including doctors

"4. DON'T LEAVE YOUR ENGINE RUNNING

Leaving your engine running while you nip into a shop or going to the hole in the wall at the bank is pretty daft anyway, but there's an extra reason not to do it - you could get fined for being a polluter. Local councils now have such powers, but few are expected to use them because traffic wardens have other priorities, particularly as the fine is only £20.
Never mind what your insurance company might say, the boys in blue are likely to take a dim view of this (as you are no longer in control of the car).
We have heard of people being done for nipping to a cash machine just a few feet from their car. " from www.instructor.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/feb2...

So beargod, I'd agree with "but leaving your car running shouldn't, it that persons own dumb fault if they want to get their car nicked" if getting your car nicked was the only issue. But it isnt.

So its not really against the law, but councils can fine you for it

And i agree it is stupid Rach
Posted by Rach, 21:58, 15th June 2003:

Well, it is against the law in a lot of places eg: www.komotv.com/news/printstory.asp?id=23...
I just can't find anything online saying it's illegal in the UK, tho I'm pretty sure it is.

Can't wait till your a parent, come back to this thread then and say the same thing - and FYI - Midwifes/Doctors don't tell you "don't leave your baby unattended" - you shouldn't leave them alone in the house, sure, bit you don't have to, and don't get told to, stay in the same room as them until they are old.
