Fog - were you there?
Posted by jlittle, 09:13, 24th June 2003:

Didn't fancy seeing him at the bowl TBH - it's too big a venue for a gig like that - i saw him in 'The Venue' on his first album tour - that was good, but only because i'd been downing pints of cider and smoking pot like a wannabe student.

I think he's a shit little Ned.

sorry.
Posted by Foghorn Leghorn, 09:36, 24th June 2003:

Those are some choice lyrics. The man's a poet. ;)

Well, he most be doing something right to be the best in his profession.

Fortunatly, impressing alternative music fans isn't one of things he has to do. =]

" Well, he most be doing something right to be the best in his profession. "

In terms of hip-hop, he's wank. A complete case of Emperor's New Clothes. He relies on gimmick value and Dre's (admittedly pretty fucking good) production. In short, he's mainstream "safe" shit which is tailor made for the "wigga" market.

There is some fucking awesome hip-hop artists out there. He's just not one of them.

Posted by Grim..., 10:48, 24th June 2003:

Um, he's still the best in his profession.

When all is said and done, those people are there to sell records.
He sells most - by an extreme amount.
So he must be doing something right...
Posted by arsepuppy, 10:52, 24th June 2003:

50 Cent's outselling him at the moment....
Posted by arsepuppy, 10:55, 24th June 2003:

How is he the "best in his profession"??

Good sales != artistic prowess.
Posted by Grim..., 10:56, 24th June 2003:

At the moment, yes.

But if you look at records sold over a period of time (and there was a web site about this, I was reading it a couple of days ago, I'm looking for it now) he completely obliterates all other hip-hop artists, including 50, Cyprus Hill and (damn) Run DMC.
Posted by cal, 10:56, 24th June 2003:

his profession is "making money from gullible young kids"

silly boy
Posted by Grim..., 10:57, 24th June 2003:

AP: How is he the "best in his profession"??

Because his profession is selling records, not being an artist.

But, if art is in the eye of the beholder, then
Good sales == artistic prowess

=]
Posted by Grim..., 10:58, 24th June 2003:

Cal: Sadly, so is most of the worlds most popular artists / bands nowadays =[
Posted by arsepuppy, 11:00, 24th June 2003:

But sales don't mean shit. Look at that list you just gave. Hardly the creme of the genre.

Where are Eric B and Rakim? Tribe? EMPD? Ultramagnetic MC's? Gang Starr? Roots? Talib Kweli? etc....

I'lll give you Run DMC though.

This proves one thing....

"8 MILE" LIED TO US!!!!!1 IT LIED!!!1
Posted by Grim..., 11:02, 24th June 2003:

Sales mean everything!
What other way can there be to measure an artists popularity?
Posted by arsepuppy, 11:02, 24th June 2003:

If it's all about sales, then what's the point???
Posted by Grim..., 11:02, 24th June 2003:

8 Mile wasn't very good, IMO.
And yeah, it lied!

Based on this, we can assume that the Fast Food Rockers are more popular than Led Zeppelin......

Hang on.....
Posted by arsepuppy, 11:04, 24th June 2003:

Didn't see it myself. Looked a bit arse.
Posted by Grim..., 11:05, 24th June 2003:

Okay, lets expand.

Everyone in the world (kind of - you know what I mean) can buy an Eminem single.
Everyone can buy a Rakim (say) single.

People exersise their preferences by purchasing the singles of their favorite artists.

Art isn't something that someone can say "Yes it is" or "No it isn't" (although you'd have a hard time convincing 90% of people on this site (including me) that) so the biggest indicator of 'greatness' is to take a nationwide poll.

Like the charts.
Posted by arsepuppy, 11:05, 24th June 2003:

I would probably rather listen to the Fast Food Rockers than Led Zep though... hmm...
Posted by arsepuppy, 11:08, 24th June 2003:

Singles buying has become such a minority pursuit in recent years though. Furthermore, it's all about which labels have the most marketing clout.
Posted by Grim..., 11:11, 24th June 2003:

That's a fair point.
There are many influencing factors, including marketing, radio playlists, and peer pressure.

However.

I saw Eminem, and I thought he was good.

Posted by cal, 12:10, 24th June 2003:

also to do with which kind of people have money to spend on singles
Posted by arsepuppy, 12:13, 24th June 2003:

Kids with pocket money. Hence the spike in sales on saturdays.
Posted by Grim..., 13:31, 24th June 2003:

AP - are you sure that's nothing to do with the fact that people go to shops on Saturdays because they are not at work / school?
Posted by arsepuppy, 13:40, 24th June 2003:

Bingo.

Kids ---> No school on Saturday ----> Too young for snouts and cider -------> Buy Cheeky Girls Single.

It's rare for adults to buy singles. Unless they do mobile discos, possibly.

Adults tend more to buy albums. Hence the album chart showing a different type of music coverage. However, this applies somewhat less so today. Kids are getting more money off Mummy and Daddy and can now afford the Gareth Gates album, for example, despite them costing fucking loads these days (HMV charge £18+ for some albums. Sods). This is why the record companies are constantly repackaging the albums on this side of the market (new cover art, extra remixes/video content) to exploit this new trend.
Posted by arsepuppy, 13:43, 24th June 2003:

TBH, I never get to go to shops on saturdays as a result of enjoying friday nights too much.
Posted by arsepuppy, 13:45, 24th June 2003:

The only time I'll ever buy singles are if it's a band/whatever that I like, and it contains B-sides etc. that I don't already have. Since I'm not into the whole downloading lark, it's a necessary evil.
Posted by arsepuppy, 13:46, 24th June 2003:

Or if a band release a single which doesn't appear on the album. A rare trend, but one sworn upon by certain bands.
Posted by cal, 14:37, 24th June 2003:

ditto

not bought any singles for a while

also, i buy nearly all my music online
Posted by arsepuppy, 14:54, 24th June 2003:

same here
Posted by beargod, 11:23, 25th June 2003:

I have to agree with AP with the whole of that.

I also think in the hip hop stakes 2Pac and Coolio were always the best
Posted by arsepuppy, 11:48, 25th June 2003:

BG, I must disagree with you..

IMHO, "Paid In Full" by Eric B & Rakim is the best Hip-Hop Album ever. Nothing 2pac ever did can touch it.
Posted by beargod, 11:51, 25th June 2003:

I never said it wasn't but I have never heard it, but its my opion there to liking those two, thats why I put "I think" in it

Posted by Foghorn Leghorn, 11:57, 25th June 2003:

I like big butts and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waste
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung, wanna pull up tough
'Cause you notice that butt was stuffed
Deep in the jeans she's wearing
I'm hooked and I can't stop staring
Oh baby, I wanna get wit'cha
And take your picture
My homeboys tried to warn me
But with that butt you got makes
Ooh, Rump-o'-smooth-skin
You say you wanna get in my Benz?
Well, use me, use me
'Cause you ain't that average groupy
I've seen them dancin'
The hell with romancin'
She's wet, wet,
Got it goin' like a turbo 'Vette
I'm tired of magazines
Sayin' flat butts are the thing
Take the average black man and ask him that
She gotta pack much back
So, fellas! (Yeah!) Fellas! (Yeah!)
Has your girlfriend got the butt? (Hell yeah!)
Tell 'em to shake it! (Shake it!) Shake it! (Shake it!)
Shake that healthy butt!
Baby got back!
Posted by beargod, 12:01, 25th June 2003:

Yo, VIP, Let's kick it!

Ice Ice Baby, Ice Ice Baby
All right stop, Collaborate and listen
Ice is back with my brand new invention
Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Then I flow like a harpoon daily and nightly
Will it ever stop? Yo -- I don't know
Turn off the lights and I'll glow
To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal
Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle.

Dance, Bum rush the speaker that booms
I'm killing your brain like a poisonous mushroom
Deadly, when I play a dope melody
Anything less than the best is a felony
Love it or leave it, You better gain way
You better hit bull's eye, The kid don't play
If there was a problem, Yo, I'll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

Ice Ice Baby Vanilla, Ice Ice Baby Vanilla
Ice Ice Baby Vanilla, Ice Ice Baby Vanilla

Now that the party is jumping
With the bass kicked in, the Vegas are pumpin'
Quick to the point, to the point no faking
I'm cooking MCs like a pound of bacon
Burning them if they're not quick and nimble
I go crazy when I hear a cymbal
And a hi hat with a souped up tempo
I'm on a roll and it's time to go solo
Rollin' in my 5.0
With my ragtop down so my hair can blow
The girlies on standby, Waving just to say Hi
Did you stop? No -- I just drove by
Kept on pursuing to the next stop
I busted a left and I'm heading to the next block
That block was dead

Yo -- so I continued to A1A Beachfront Ave.
Girls were hot wearing less than bikinis
Rockman lovers driving Lamborghinis
Jealous 'cause I'm out geting mine
Shay with a gauge and Vanilla with a nine
Reading for the chumps on the wall
The chumps acting ill because they're so full of "Eight Ball"
Gunshots ranged out like a bell
I grabbed my nine -- All I heard were shells
Falling on the concrete real fast
Jumped in my car, slammed on the gas
Bumper to bumper the avenue's packed
I'm trying to get away before the jackers jack
Police on the scene, You know what I mean
They passed me up, confronted all the dope fiends
If there was a problem, You, I'll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

Ice Ice Baby Vanilla, Ice Ice Baby Vanilla
Ice Ice Baby Vanilla, Ice Ice Baby Vanilla

Take heed, 'cause I'm a lyrical poet
Miami's on the scene just in case you didn't know it
My town, that created all the bass sound
Enough to shake and kick holes in the ground
'Cause my style's like a chemical spill
Feasible rhymes that you can vision and feel
Conducted and formed, This is a hell of a concept
We make it hype and you want to step with this
Shay plays on the fade, slice like a ninja
Cut like a razor blade so fast, Other DJs say, "damn"
If my rhyme was a drug, I'd sell it by the gram
Keep my composure when it's time to get loose
Magnetized by the mic while I kick my juice
If there was a problem, Yo -- I'll solve it!
Check out the hook while Deshay revolves it.

Ice Ice Baby Vanilla, Ice Ice Baby Vanilla
Ice Ice Baby Vanilla, Ice Ice Baby Vanilla

Yo man -- Let's get out of here! Word to your mother!

Ice Ice Baby Too cold, Ice Ice Baby Too cold Too cold
Ice Ice Baby Too cold Too cold, Ice Ice Baby Too cold Too cold

The legendary Men and Motors series "Ice With Jordan", a cheap Top Gear knockoff, presented by Vanilla Ice and famous breastmodel Jordan.

HEY, HEY!!!!

Ganstarr has got to be da sure shot
Nice & Smooth has got to be da sure shot

[Greg Nice]

Greg Nice!!! Greg N-I-C-E
Droppin dem basso, ah oui oui
Rock for a fee, not for free
Maybe I`ll do it for charity
Now my employer or my employee
Is makin Greg N-I-C-E very M-A-D
Don`t ever ever think of jerkin me
I work to hard for my royalty
Put lead in ya ass and drink a cup of tea
Peace to Red Alert and Kid Capri
Ooohh la la ah oui oui, I say Muhammad Ali, ya say Cassius Clay
I say butter you say Parkay
It`s alright if ya wanna make a sway
I`m a way up town, took duece to the tre
I originate, they duplicate
I praise the lord and keep the faith
It`s alright keep bitin at da bait
`92, uh!!, one year later
Peace out Premier take me out wit da fader

[Premier scratches and hooks]

[Guru]

I chant eenie meenie, minie moe
I wreck da mic like a pimp pimps hoes
Here`s how it goes I am a genius I mean this
I shake this you`ll take this
I`m kinda fiendish
You wish that you could come into my neighborhood
Meaning my mental state
Still I`m 5 foot 8
Crazy as I wanna be
Cause I make it orderly
You could say I`m sorta da boss so get lost
The brotha dat will make you change opinions
Dominions I`m in them when it`s time to kick shit from
The heart, plus I get a piece of the action
I`m feelin satisfaction from the street crowd reaction
Chumps pull guns when they feel afraid, too late
When they dip in the kick they get sprayed
Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is
I get more props den stunts den Bruce Willis
A poet like Langston Hughes and can`t lose when I cruise
Out on the expressway
Leavin the Bodega I say "suave"
Premier`s got more beats den barns got hay
Clips are inserted into my gun
So I can take the money, neva have ta run

[Premier scratches and hooks]

[Smooth B]

I left my Phillie at home
Do you have another?
I wanna get blunted my brother
Now may I make a mark
Then make a spark over this phat track
Or should I say dope beat
Subtract, delete
All of the wick wack that wanna be abstract
But they lack the new knack that`s comin from way way back
Hey yo Premier, please pass that buddha sack
You hear we quit?
No way, bullshit
I told ya before we come back wit more hits
I provide bright flava, so you could sketch me
Do me a favor, dont try and catch me
Slightly ahead of the game, I`m not a lame
Ask him, he`ll tell you the same he knows my name
Smooth, I drop jewels like, paraphenalia
I`m infallable, not into failure
Like a rhinocerus, my speed is prosperous
And pure knowledge expands from my esophagus
I write here tonite to bring truth to the light
My dialogue is my own cause Smooth B will neva bite

[Premier scratches and hooks]

Perhaps she meant 'My God your threads rocket off topic like nothing I've ever seen before'.

But this one stayed on topic quite well, I think (apart from people instantly going 'I don't like Eminem! He sucks because...' - Yeah, well I do and I went to the concert).
