Rachel,
I don't know if you are the correct person to speak to in regard to this matter, so if you are not could you please pass it on to someone at a managerial level.
I am currently in the process of buying a new property in the Leyland, Lancs area - one of the main reasons I am moving to this area is because I know that it is a Telewest cabled area, and would like to take advantage of your products, namely the phone and internet service.
I phoned up Sales a about a month ago when I first found and had an offer accepted on the house that we are buying, explaining at the time that it was a brand new house and didn't have a number yet, the person I spoke to said that because it was available down the street that I am moving to, I should be able to have it installed but may need to wait a few weeks for it to go into the database - he said to call back once we had a house number.
Today, I received the house number from the Builders and phoned up Sales yet again, this time however, I got a very different answer. I was told by the Sales advisor that because the number is not on your database, we could not receive the service - apparently no new numbers are being added until at least 6 months time.
Can you please explain the rational behind this - the Sales advisor said it cost about £2000 to add the house number to the database, but could not explain why it cost this amount. Why, when if I lived in a house two doors would I be able to receive the service, but not in this house? Is the same procedure not followed to install the actually connection?
Working in a communications company myself, it is one of my tasks to follow the news of other companies - cable is not doing as well as expected, and it's well published that money is not being made, but it seems to be that if it costs £2000 to add a house number to the database, this is probably a good reason why - Imagine if I phoned up BT and said I had a new house and wanted their telephone service, I'm sure that they would not tell me to try again in about 6 months time.
I would like a connection to Telewest, if this is not available, then I would at least like to know the reason why it takes so long to get a new home up and running when other houses down the street are able to have a connection.
In case you need it, the postcode of the area in question is : PR25 4YD - and the house number will be 159a.
Also, so that you know, I will be publishing this e-mail and any further replies to a few very popular websites, primarily my personal website at :

I eagerly await your response.
Thanks
James Little
Install the actually connection?

Vic, I know there may be errors, but I think she will be able to understand the e-mail itself without pointing these out.
I understand, i'm just thinking about freelancing as a proof-reader.
