I am extremely bored...someone think of a conversation for us to discuss. I would but my brain just aint working today.
"A Hole Is Only Really A Hole If Circular: Discuss"
I started this one in a pub once and the debate lasted for 3 years.

Thats bollocks. What else are going to call it? "Oh there was a kidney shaped dent in my garden while we were waiting for the pool to be put in"? It just doesnt sound right.
Posted by
beargod, 14:54, 30th July 2003:
A Hole as in Anus Hole?
A hole can be any shape...a bricky will dig a rectangular hole to start building a wall.
Dent sounds alright, but you could have used crevice, gap, crack, grave etc. Each shape has an associated synonym.
And an arsehole is round (despite the deceptive "starfish" look), thus it is a genuine hole. A minge qualifies as a hole due to it being pretty much round when open. Otherwise it is a crack.

My flats a shithole but it aint circular
When i used to did foxholes (to use the americanism) they weren't round.
Look at the evidence....
Polos - The Mint With A Hole.. What shape is the hole?? Circular..
Roadrunner cartoons. The (Acme) holes in that. What shape are they?? Circular.... (or similar)
Hmmm... what's that noise. Oh yeah, a case resting.
"Shithole" is a colloquialism not a kind of opening so it doesn't apply.
And Americans don't count because they can't spell "colour"
a rectangular hole is a trench
What the fuck is a fox hole? Well apart from a hole a fox goes down.
AP, how can you hear that sound when all info above points to holes not having to be round. Eh? eh? eh?
Even Wookey Hole is circular (after a fashion)
The roadrunner holes were usually coyote shaped.
Cheers ILBM, you seem to understand. Although aren't trenches strictly horizontal (i.e. along the ground) as opposed to vertical (in walls)??
And a Foxhole,(or shellscrape) to use its proper name is a man-made hole in the ground you can cower like a weasel in when people are trying to kill you. and its normally a
rectangular hole
Therefore it's really a grave (if it's closely enclosed)
no, you don't bury yourself alive.

"I knocked a hole through the dividing wall last night" I very much doubt my hole I knocked will be circular. More of a ragged mess.
But a grave doesn't necessarily have to be covered by earth, for example shallow graves in Epping Forest.

The only round holes are golf ones compared to the dictionary :)

beargod, 15:18, 30th July 2003:
The sides of a hole has to join up or it would be called a canyon(or a valley or something else), but it can be any shape
A grave generally is something with something dead in the ground, it does not have to be covered up but by definition there has to be something dead
"
The sides of a hole has to join up or it would be called a canyon(or a valley or something else), but it can be any shape "
You could argue that this is circular by definition. Anyway, the dictionary talks bollocks.

What about the hole in the wall. Or the hole in my sock. Or the hole in your argument.
Fuck off Sul, I'm right and you know it. ;)
how about potholers then, are all caves perfectly round?

Sul, 15:49, 30th July 2003:
Oooooh AP. You ever thought of teaming up with Johnny Cochran? With closing statements like that you two would be unstoppable. ;)
Yes they are Vic. Or at least roundish.
Posted by
beargod, 16:08, 30th July 2003:
now you are going against what you said by round, and say roundish :P
round and roundish are somewhat interchangable. Obviously I don't mean explicitly a perfect circle. That's just madness.

Bloody hope so. I've seen more life in an Iranian McDonald's

beargod, 16:32, 30th July 2003:
You said circular to start off with not round, that means a circle, not an oblong, etc etc etc
CIRCULAR DOESNT MEAN A PERFECT CIRCLE, TSK!
e.g. The North Circular, The Circle Line. Not perfect circles by any stretch.
Posted by
beargod, 16:47, 30th July 2003:
circular means something shaped like a circle, and circle means all the sides(bearing in mind a circle is made up od infinite sides) are the same difference from one point.

See I discovered how to get information to back myself up, YAY me :)
But my argument was initially fuelled by beer, which is better than the sodding dictionary, so I win.

beargod, 16:56, 30th July 2003:
Well, that may be so, but a metal dustbin could swallow your beer anyday :)

"bearing in mind a circle is made up od infinite sides"
on a computer maybe. mathematically, they have a single side
tsk

beargod, 20:29, 30th July 2003:
I was taught in maths a circle has infinate sides and corners. It would make more sense in that reason, but looking on line, peoples maths teachers have said infinate, some people say it depends on too many factors etc etc.
"the ratio between the perimeter of a polygon and the longest diagonal of a polygon tends towards pi as the number of sides of the polygon increases"
Is probably what i was thinking of
Posted by
beargod, 20:30, 30th July 2003:
"However, it is true that the limit of an n sided regular polygon as n tends to infinity is a circle"
The dictionary says:
1.A hollowed place in something solid; a cavity or pit: dug a hole in the ground with a shovel.
2.An opening or perforation
it has nothing to do with shape

I'm loving the math discussion on the definition of a circle, but the arguement that a hole has to be circular is shit.
No it's not "shit". I'm right and you're all (humourless) cunts ;)

Ha! POLYGON was mentioned. This reminded me of the time I was very rebelious at school and the teacher asked, "Who can tell me what a polygon is". I told her it was a dead parrot and got thrown out of the class.
I love my own jokes...
Is that you being rebelious?
Posted by
friday, 11:53, 31st July 2003:
well, foggy, that was one of the times of many and the teachers said I was rebelious anyway

another time was when some friends and I filled a condom with hair mouse (which was an essential item in a girls schoolbag) and then threw it around the classroom - got sent to the deputy headmaster and he threatened to tell my parents
Posted by
friday, 11:58, 31st July 2003:
i mean the hair moose (cant spell) not the condom being an essential item in my school bag!
before you all start!!
Was it a mouse, a moose or mousse?
Posted by
beargod, 12:09, 31st July 2003:
he he he, silly girl man friday
I am amused by the thought of you stretching a condom over a moose and heaving it across the room.
Posted by
beargod, 12:17, 31st July 2003:
That is reasonably very funny thought
Posted by
friday, 12:23, 31st July 2003:
I will leave it to your imagination, but it was hair moose (still dont know how to spell) which, when squirted into a condom, looks a bit like sperm
Posted by
beargod, 12:29, 31st July 2003:
I thought by hair mouse you meant a tampon :)
And that is definatly mousse :)
Posted by
friday, 12:31, 31st July 2003:
thanks

Posted by

Sort of a young ones telescope/mouse thought, plus it being kind of cottony hairy
Plus you said essential female item :)
