I am not religeous and this is one of the reasons why. Althought I am not a female and do not wish to buy this product, I have been driven to outrage that some fucking stupid, elderly, supposedly christian/ human fucks think this is right...

did you notice I was gone?
Posted by arsepuppy, 15:37, 8th August 2003:

I have no anger towards religion, only the knobs who use it as a vehicle for their prejudices.
Posted by gobbo, 15:38, 8th August 2003:

Im not jumping to conclusions, but would this be an American website?

I think the members of iamcal should write to the ladies of landover and use certain words in their letters like, "cunt" "cock" "yours" "up" "bat" "baseball" etc....

I did, yes.

Ha! You want anger toward knobs misusing religion, try living where I live for a while.

They take it too a new level. Quite creative about it too.

It's true, they ought to ban parody sites.. just think of the dangerously misled people taking them seriously, and going around shooting people or boycotting stuff because of someone's idea of a joke.

Satire as well, is bloody dangerous, not to mention subversive.

Or perhaps they could have a little disclaimer at the top saying "Joke!".

Like the dossier towards the Iraqi war?

Gobbo:

You got something against Americans?
Posted by tommorris, 08:39, 9th August 2003:

As I suggested a few months back, surely, to aid Americans with parody, sarcasm, irony and other rhetoric we really need a META tag so that it can make their browser warn them: "ALERT! The following website contains use of rhetorical language including, but not limited to: irony, sarcasm, parody, cynicism. Be aware that the material on this website should not be taken seriously - go to FoxNews.com for more information".
Posted by gobbo, 09:51, 9th August 2003:

Nov: Of course I dont! But most Americans simply dont understand that to get through crisis and strife the British take the piss out of whatever is going on, I mean how many jokes about princess Di's death were there? And 9/11, shocking yes, I dont want to denegrate the whole thing at all, but in Reading there was a largeish building (forget where it was now all of you from the Reading area) that had a huge flag with a picture of a bullseye and the words "just try it" underneath.
Posted by mikey_boy, 09:53, 9th August 2003:

but what's weird is that americans produce some of the best comedy along these lines, after all, landoverbaptist is american, as is theonion. Not to mention shows like the simpsons, family guy, futurama, fraiser etc
Posted by Doctor Lucid, 13:33, 9th August 2003:

Oh, deary deary me.. one day someone will come to save the world from monstrous generalisations...
Posted by tommorris, 14:06, 9th August 2003:

They also produce Friends which only barely qualifies as "comedy" and could definitely not be described as "some of the best".
Posted by Doctor Lucid, 19:44, 9th August 2003:

It seems so bizarre that everyone is so prejudiced about american people. I mean, what other nation in the world gets tarred with the same brush as a few stupid people.

It's like jumping to the conclusion "Black people steal hubcaps" from the premise "Some black people have stolen hubcaps". I mean, if anyone claimed that, it would be considered to be racist, and rightly so.

But, a comment like "Americans don't understand sarcasm / irony" seems a perfectly reasonable thing to say.
Posted by gobbo, 08:35, 11th August 2003:

Well I hate to say it, but generally its true. I have a number of american friends and they dont find/understand irony/sarcasm in the way we (british) do. Im not being racist, if i said that people in China dont speak very good English is that being rascist? Of course not. Its a simple observation. Im just pain stakingly trying to point out that they have a different cultural comedy set to us. Jeez....
Posted by Sul, 09:09, 11th August 2003:

It's political correctness gone mad! Whats the world coming to when you cant say all yanks are stupid inbred yokels who think irony is what cow liver tastes like?

/sorry gotta go, dont want to be late for my BNP meet. This morning we're going to discuss the issue of the rising population of Kiwi's stealing our jobs and women. Then go to the local Walkabout and start a fight

What is theonion and the landoverbaptist?

And if you think those things are funny you should watch Blackadder, well nearly all British comedy they are alot funnier.
Im not jumping to conclusions, but would this be an American website?
But surely you just disprove your own point with this suggestion, as it is indeed an american website, and yet it does seem to have it's finger on the pulse of such hard-to-understand concepts such as irony, and sarcasm.

What I'm saying is that it's a blatant lie that somehow most americans have no idea of irony / sarcasm, whereas people from the good old UK seem to be able to spot them at 500 yards. Why, this entire thread seems to be disproving this point, and everyone leaps to the conclusion that it's an american site because it comes across as a mental, religious right website. Actually it's a parody of one. Ohhh, an AMERICAN parody of one. How the hell did they do that? Without the forces of irony and sarcasm? My god!

So yes. Bloody Foreigners. And all that.

"What is theonion"

??? Shouldn't you know this?? The famous spoof website. Tsk, and you call yourself a geek! ;p

i think he would probably clam.
Posted by Doctor Lucid, 14:37, 12th August 2003:

Hmmm.... perhaps this Bear(god) Baiting is going a bit far.. also, Blackadder hasn't been on TV in about 5 years, so you can't really criticise Beergoad's claim there... and plus it's based on something he said ages ago and you're suddenly bringing it up in about 5 threads at once.. I mean, it would be like attacking me for claiming to see something with perfect vision, even though I haven't mentioned my fork-punctured eye for ages now...
Posted by chandler, 14:37, 12th August 2003:

he watches blackadder on DVD
Posted by cal, 14:58, 12th August 2003:

i've only just come back and read a bunch of threads. and in every one, beargod is either critising or supporting the media en mass with awful handwaving generalisations. i just can't believe anything he says
