I wonder about your all time fav films - try and think more about older movies mebs - not sure what the age range is here.

Favourite "recent" movie - Bladerunner.

Fav oldie - Twelve angry men - the Henry Fonda one.

Fav irrational choice - Highlander (only the first one mind)

Favourite "recent" movie - Die Hard, sawshank redemption

Fav oldie - cannot think of one, does it have to be B&W? how old exactly?

Fav irrational choice - Highlander (only the first one mind) - too

Shawshank redemption - what a film. Bombed at the box office - classic word of mouth success on DVD/ Video.

Doesnt have to be B and W - suppose "oldie" is a subjective term.

so does field of dreams count?

How can you lot pick just the one each?? It's too hard!!
Posted by arsepuppy, 09:52, 11th August 2003:

I'll try though, first go (this'll change in 5 mins, I'll guess)

Oldie : Citizen Kane (I know it suffers from over-canonization but it's fucking perfect. The camerawork, the poignant ending.... Amazing stuff)

Recentish: Battle Royale, Ringu, Delicatessen, Full Metal Jacket, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Blue Velvet, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (actually stick anything by David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick and Milos Forman here). Arrggh this is too hard

Guilty Pleasure : Rocky III

Nah, changed my mind already. Bloody "all time favourite" threads. I'm crap at 'em.

my vote goes to 'Jeepers Creepers'
Posted by Sul, 10:09, 11th August 2003:

I'll try too:

Oldies: Anything with Marx Bros in, most notably Animal Crackers and Duck Soup.

Recentish: Ferris Buellers Day Off. Chasing Amy. Goodfellas

Guilty Pleasure: Hackers. Cocktail.
Posted by arsepuppy, 10:10, 11th August 2003:

Shit! I forgot about Ferris Bueller!! That's definitely a top 5'er for me. Quality.

Tsk, it's an excellent genre.
Posted by beargod, 12:09, 11th August 2003:

It probably is, but I never got into it

I have always prefered a comedy, although Disney/Pixar are annoying me now with all their cartoon films being comedies and having all the same jokes in them now

"although Disney/Pixar are annoying me now with all their cartoon films being comedies and having all the same jokes in them now"

???
Posted by beargod, 12:12, 11th August 2003:

Have you seen a disney cartoon that is not a comedy and does not use the same jokes as all their other cartoon films?
Posted by arsepuppy, 12:16, 11th August 2003:

Chay will answer this for me, I hope. He's our Disney expert.

I was going to say "Pulp Fiction" but that would annoy a few people. That was a Disney cartoon.
Posted by Foghorn Leghorn, 12:22, 11th August 2003:

Why would Pulp Fiction annoy people?
Posted by arsepuppy, 12:23, 11th August 2003:

It wouldn't, but calling it a Disney Cartoon might. There's some precious fucks out there.
Posted by beargod, 12:25, 11th August 2003:

I never got past the first half hour the dance bit annoyed me and the dieing so I switched it off

You should apply to be the Evening Standard's new film critic.
Posted by Foghorn Leghorn, 12:28, 11th August 2003:

I thought it was a great film, obviously there are better films out there but I really enjoyed it.
Posted by beargod, 12:30, 11th August 2003:

I'm not being critical, I just got bored, like I watched the first 30 mins of Chicago the other day and decided watching my jihng was more interesting thenwatching the erst so I did that instead.
Posted by Foghorn Leghorn, 12:31, 11th August 2003:

Chicago, well theres a film that I have no interest in watching.
Posted by arsepuppy, 12:31, 11th August 2003:

Yeah foggy, I liked it too. I just like to wind people up.
Posted by Foghorn Leghorn, 12:35, 11th August 2003:

I have noticed that..

Talking of films, I watched Gangs of New York at the weekend. ~~Pish! Pure pish! Just reinforces my opinion of that little wank but Day Lewis was excellent (as usual)
Posted by beargod, 12:41, 11th August 2003:

Thats what I thought Foggy, Its started off quite good, with the first fight, then seein where everyone had got too after so many years. But then it just went all crap
Posted by chandler, 12:42, 11th August 2003:

I must admit its hard to think of a disney film that doesnt have a "humourous" sidekick
but then i wouldnt describe them as full on comedies.
Beauty and the Beast for example, Pinochio (sp) is pretty messed up too.
Disney need to get a new Lion king/little mermaid or alladin pretty soon else good bye mouse house.
Posted by chandler, 12:42, 11th August 2003:

i liked the big hats in gangs of new york. very big hats.
Posted by chandler, 12:44, 11th August 2003:

(i say goodbye mouse house but of course they are still one of the top film distributers in the world. but really they need to make a really first rate musical blockbuster else they will have to start sacking their animation team andt hen i'll have no chance of getting a job in animation cos the market will be saturated by ex-disney people
Posted by arsepuppy, 12:50, 11th August 2003:

...or the poor folks in Korea who all the actual work.
Posted by beargod, 12:50, 11th August 2003:

They need to just make a decent animation that is original and maybe for them to make a film with actors like they used to do. Jungle book 2 and peter pan 2 why bother? Why can't they just buy up another childrens story and animate it like they used too? they used to be good at that
Posted by chandler, 12:52, 11th August 2003:

which childrens story though?
Posted by arsepuppy, 12:53, 11th August 2003:

Mein Kampf.

Posted by chandler, 12:55, 11th August 2003:

the diary of anne frank would be a cheery little movie.
they could change the ending though so that she and her amusing woodlouse sidekick ended up sailing to america and living in the land of the free, happily ever after.
Posted by arsepuppy, 12:57, 11th August 2003:

I think they should do a musical based on the works of Franz Kafka. That'll be quite jolly.
Posted by Doctor Lucid, 12:59, 11th August 2003:

Yeah.. they could get Stephen Berkoff to write the script...
Posted by beargod, 12:59, 11th August 2003:

The Hobbit would be good, be quite brilliant for them to do infact. There are millions of child stories to make films out there.

Although the ammusing sidekick idea is getting old. Maybe the actual character could be funny ocasionally for once?
Posted by chandler, 12:59, 11th August 2003:

or the Marquis De Sade, that'll bring the punters in
Posted by chandler, 13:00, 11th August 2003:

the hobbit wouldnt be good cos they are doing the film of it with real people so you wouldnt want an animated one too
Posted by arsepuppy, 13:01, 11th August 2003:

Fuck it, I think they should do a remake of Caligula, using cute animals in orgies.
Posted by arsepuppy, 13:01, 11th August 2003:

Chay, that last post was very beargod-like ;)
Posted by beargod, 13:02, 11th August 2003:

Yes what film of the Hobbit are they doing? The Hobbit is funny and has songs in it they have to change little

true

hahaha. I read it on the mailing list and actually thought it was beargod :D
Posted by Doctor Lucid, 13:04, 11th August 2003:

Although, that wasn't really a musical..

Gregor:
My god! Oh my!
I do appear to be
A large insect!
And no longer
The travelling salesman
I was last night!

Mother:
Oh no! What's this!
Foul beetle that you are!
My son? Where he?
Shame,
Has descended
On the house of Samsa.

Father:
Come, let us get,
Three lodgers
Who play musical instruments.
And they shall
Replace our invertebrate
Son.

Enter lodgers. Lodger 2 plays Harmonica. Lodger 1 plays Saxophone. Lodger 3 tapdances.
Lodger 3:
Begone, Gregor, begone!
Or we shall lodge an apple
In your shiny carapace!

Gregor:
Alas, and woe, I cannot turn round.
The end is nigh, I fear.
My son, my heir, lies
Behind the clock, but my final hour draws near.
Oh darn, oh hell, I fear indeed.
That the rest is silence.
Alas.

Or something like that, anyway.
Posted by Doctor Lucid, 13:05, 11th August 2003:

RE: Cube, from the IMDB, I like this:

"All of the characters are named after prisons: Quentin (San Quentin, California), Holloway (England), Kazan (Russia), Rennes (France), Alderson (Alderson, West Virginia), Leaven and Worth (Leavenworth, Kansas).

Not only are the characters named after prisons but they reflect the prisons themselves. Example: Kazan (the mentally challenged character), in Russia is a disorganized prison. Rennes (the "mentor") was a jail that pioneered many of today's prison policies. Quentin (the detective) is known for its brutality. Holloway is a women's prison, and Alderson is a prison where isolation is a common punishment. Leavenworth runs to a rigid set of rules (Leaven's mathematics), and the new prison is corporately owned and built (Worth, hired as an architect)."

But lara croft is a fictional character created entirely to make money from young boys masturbatory habits, way to pick a role model. you could at least be honest and pick Jenna Jameson.
