Not wanting to start an argument, but...
The sun, express and mail all carry headlines today to the effect that [the uk] wants to stop immigration. The rate has reached 1 million every five years.
Now if i think about that for a moment, the stupid claims that immigrants "take our jobs" would indicated that there be as many immigrants as non-immigrants (whatever that means!) for there to be a one-to-one job swap. The 2001 cencus says we have 58,789,194 people living in the uk. to get that many immigrants at the current rate would take, let's see, 294 years.
According to the census, we have a population growth, since 1991, of about 2.4%. 1.024 ^ (294 / 10) = 2.008, so after 294 years, our natural popul\ation will have doubled anyway. so we've got a good half a millenium until the number of immigrants reaches the number of non immigrants. Not exactly the "next week" that the tabloids are prophecising.
Thus starts the arguments.

Posted by
arsepuppy, 15:38, 18th August 2003:
The thing is, the Mail is more obviously bad, and since it's target readership are the slightly older middle class types, it's less dangerous. The Sun on the other hand, especially under the leadership of Rebekkah Wade, is horrible. Not only does it present highly racist/homophobic/generally nasty material (e.g. the "Asylum seekers" Mr Men spoof and the entire oeuvre of Mr. Littlejohn), but it does so with impressionable people in mind. It's dumbed down to get through the the widest and lowest common denonimator of people and is possibly more to blame for the current rise in far right activity than any other paper. It may have been the Mail in the past, but the Sun in the new bastard.
Posted by
arsepuppy, 15:43, 18th August 2003:
Even it's use of the English writing is horrible, for instance the recent story of a wealthy masseuse murdered in her home. Headline: "TART KNIFED IN HOME".
And who can forget the whole "name and shame paedophiles" campaign, where paediatricians had their houses torched as a result. During this period the Sun would juxtapose their bile with a "PHWOAR! Charlotte Church! Look at her arse!" article, not to mention the time where they ran a feature where a girl coming up to her 16th birthday would shed more and more clothes each day up to the big day, where she got them out.

Hey, leave the Sun alone! The columns by Littlejohn and Jayne Moore are the best reads of the week!
As for this immigration issue, I have no problem with people immigrating to escape some of the worst places on earth - some of the stories I hear are extremely upsetting. However, I get very annoyed at those who have no right to be here, and yet still claim asylum - we give them a house, a weekly handout and free healthcare etc. whilst their "claim" is processed - money that could be better spent elsewhere. And by the time their claim has been processed, they've either been here too long so that they're entitled to stay legally, or they've hired a decent lawyer to fight for their claim to stay.
Did anyone see the Tonight program a week or so ago? It was about some guy (asylum seeker, I think) freeloading off our handouts. He drives a BMW, rents out the house given to him by the Government for money, gets free healthcare, and STILL picks up his weekly handout. That really makes my blood boil.
Because none of the people who were born here do that.

Oh, and Page 3 was excellent today - phwoar! :D
All newspapers are a waste. The Independent- "It is, are you?" should actually be "It isn't because 6 members of our board of directors are Liberal Democrats, are you stupid enough to buy it?"
The Mail once ran a competition asking people for money saving tips. One woman wrote in and suggested that she saves money by giving her children sweets and saying to them "lets play a game of 'see who can make their sweet last the longest!'". Which just shows the mentality of it's readers - willing to starve their kids for their own self-betterment. The Sun and The Mirror are just bloody awful. They're still trying to appeal to an England that hasn't existed for 30 years. I have read the Express or the Times for ages. They're probably crap. I do buy the Guardian BUT I buy the Guardian for OnLine, The Guide, Notes & Queries and Our Readers Reads. The rest of it is shite (Yes, I buy one news paper twice a week.) The rest of the news I make my own opinions on.
House prices - now that's something that's out of control since labour came to power. I still couldn't afford a house in London (where I live) if I married someone earning double my current salary. That's stupid. And the police. Should be known as Metropolitan Apathy. Schools - shit. NHS - shit. And they're worried about a few more immigrants. Nice to know these papers have their priorities right.

Another book on amazon
Well, when I first saw this thread title, I thought "Oh darn, this is going to be fun", and clicked my fingers out so they make that Dr. Darcy clicking noise. But actually it turns out that most people on here seem to have a pretty reasonable approach to asylum, and not the "Bloody foreign immigrants! Bastards! Coming here and stealing our jobs, and yet also scrounging off the state at the same time!".
The Sun and the Mail are both a couple of big spazzy racists, and it's disgusting. Oh! How much 'handouts' do asylum seekers get? What vast figure is it? Oh, it's about £30 a week. Bastards! I mean, that's almost as much as the dole!

To be honest I think we have alot of things like NHS and schools that we could spend the money on, and I would like to see how other countries deal with immigration cos alot of them seem to always want to come here rather then the option of going to alot of countries, but if they are legitimate cases then yes they do deserve to get away from whatever they are running from

arsepuppy, 12:44, 19th August 2003:
For instance, repeats of Fraggle Rock.
Littlejohn vs. Self is amazing. Respect to Self. (or Self Respect).
Aaaand, one of the reasons that immigrants come to the UK so much is because of the really harsh immigration laws across most of europe. And so pople reckon we ought to change our immigration laws to fit in with the harsher ones in Europe. Whereas if Europe changed their laws, then there wouldn't be a major problem in ANY country. More babies are born in one week in the UK than asylum seekers arrive in one year.
"Whereas if Europe changed their laws, then there wouldn't be a major problem in ANY country"
What you mean look at the issue from all sides and come up with the most sensible solution! It's so crazy it just might work....

Well, yeah. I mean, the only reason people consider asylum to be a problem in the UK is because the UK gets a higher proportion (which still isn't very many) of asylum seekers than, say, France. But think about it, if all counrries accepted more asylum seekers, then it wouldn't really be a problem anywhere, and all the bloody sun readers wouldn't be able to say "ohhh, we're a soft touch."

Because ideally it wants skilled people who can speak english and french, it has so many a year it can choose to be picky so it has a quite easy to get into points scheme.

so it isnt openly accepting immigrants then, its allowing selected migrants that will bring money into the country to come and join them. other countries do that too. we could apply to live in loads of places.
