american donuts are very different to uk donuts. in the uk, the emphasis
is on content and quality of dough. the us emphasis seems to be purely
on topping - the dough is much tougher and the whole taste more bland.
us donuts are much closer to "icing(frosting) on bread" than they are to
uk donuts. also, uk donuts are usually covered in loose suger (usually
cast sugarm but sometimes icing sugar), which makes them sweet without
having to add frosting. by comparison, us donut taste almost savory.
the average uk donut contains jam - this is normal for us, whereas an
exception to the rule for you. it's also pretty common to find uk donuts
containing custurd, apple, caramel, and different flavours of jam.
presentation is different too - us donuts are designed to looks appealing;
pretty colors and patterns; whereas uk donuts tend to all look the same;
plain and dusted with sugar.

hope that helps.

mmm Donuts (someone had to do it)

I've had Krispy Kremes and they actually are better than most donuts I've had in the US.

Some small family run bakeries have very good donuts though.
