How many ways can you think of to measure the height of a tall building with a barometer? I've got a list of about 20 so far, wanna see which ones you guys can come up with.

A funny answer is better than a serious one.

A funny answer is better than a serious one.

I have found this not to be the case in almost all of my jobs.

Tie some string to the barometer and dangle it off the edge. Mark and measure the string

edit: Not so much dangle but you know what I mean.

How about working out its terminal velocity, take its acceleration at 9.81, then drop it off the building and time how long it takes to hit the ground? You can then use those values to work out how tall the building is....

lol @ "Not so much dangle but you know what I mean"

*apologises*

Use the corner of the barometer to press the phone keys and dial the Architect and say "How tall is your buildiing?"
Posted by chandler, 14:22, 26th August 2003:

thats good :)

Slowly chip away at the base of the building with the corner of the barometer until you have cut through, then push the building over, once it is lying along the floor, move the barometer along the building to find out how many "barometer widths" it is, if you want to stay pure you know the measurement in barometers widths, if you are less pure you could use a tape measure to measure the width of the barometer and multiply that by the number of barometer widths, voila.

Break a shop window with the barometer* and then wait for Batman to show up, ask him to use his utility belt** to measure said building before taking you in.

* Only do this if its a Gotham City building.

** Only do this if its Adam West - Batman. Michael Keaton will kick your ass.

go Keaton go!

Bah! I was typing this one in and the electricity went off, Vic Im not copying you on the superhero bit, OK?

Right, ask Spiderman to stride up the building using his spider powers. Make sure he strides evenly. Measure stride on his return.

NB This is not an accurate form of measurement due to the following influencing factors:

1. You may not beable to locate Spiderman easily.
2. He could be hungover when you do find him, therefore his strides may not be even.
3. It might be windy.
4. It could be raining.

stick the barometer to inspector gadgets ruler and ask him to measure the building
Posted by chandler, 14:50, 26th August 2003:

friday! where does the barometer fit in! you have you use a barometer not just Spider-man!
Posted by friday, 14:52, 26th August 2003:

The barometer is for reading the weather conditions before you send Spiderman up the building - der!
Posted by beargod, 14:54, 26th August 2003:

Cut a hole in the barometer big enough to fit your head in, or just wear it on your head if you are good at balancing things on your head(thinking about how thing barometers usually are the second might be best). Run up every step, or if you are lazy take the lift and count the steps, or time taken up the lift. Or you could get to the top and use a long measuring tool
Posted by chandler, 14:55, 26th August 2003:

friday you cheat! :D
Posted by Sul, 14:55, 26th August 2003:

Draw around barometer on a piece of paper. Cut this shape out. Walk away from the base of the building in a straight line looking through the hole until the building fits into it. Count your paces as you do this. Measure your pace and then multiply by the amount of paces you took. This measurment may or may not be roughly the same as the building. I'm not sure.

Use the barometer to hammer yourself a siege tower then measure the height of the siege tower if it is big enough
Posted by Victor Menendez, 14:56, 26th August 2003:

Go to the top of the building, throw the barometer at someone below with lethal intent, tip off the newspapers and hope for an absurdly detailed newspaper article.
Posted by friday, 14:57, 26th August 2003:

LOL @ BG - this building is 1220 steps high
Posted by Sul, 15:00, 26th August 2003:

sell barometer in favour of a rather lengthy tape measure. Measure building.
Posted by ilovebeerme, 15:03, 26th August 2003:

Measure the barometer. Balance it on the edge of the building furthest from the sun. Run downstairs and measure it's shadow and then measure the buildings shadow. Then put your penis in the barometer.
Posted by ilovebeerme, 15:04, 26th August 2003:

Cover the barometer in Guaranteed 10m Bouncing Springs then see what percentage of the building it bounces up when dropped.
Posted by beargod, 15:04, 26th August 2003:

You've done that before then Friday

Buy a two suction pads, some very strong adhesive, two material strips strong enough to hold your wait, another barometer and a couple of pads of postits. Stick the sucker pads to the barometers with the adhesive, stick the matrial to the barometers too, and wrap it tightly around your wrists. Now take the post it note and start sticking them to the wall from the bottom, climb up putting the post its directly above the previous, then climb down again and count the number of postits, leave it all there for future barometer lovers to do again, maybe charging them to count the height of the building
Posted by ilovebeerme, 15:05, 26th August 2003:

Shout at the barometer and see how long it takes before it hears you.
Posted by chandler, 15:06, 26th August 2003:

vicky's ones are best so far

though beargod's last one is fantastic and also has weight spelt wait :D

Break into an evil scientists lab using the barometer to knock out any security, find the substance to make dead wood live and talk english, that is bound to be there. Pour liquid onto barometer ask it to measure the building for you

Find a barometer that incidentally has a helicopter built around it, get the pilot to land on the roof, ask him the altitude.
Posted by ilovebeerme, 15:12, 26th August 2003:

Stick the barometer in a pigs brain enabling him to talk then send him to college to become a surveyor.
Posted by Sul, 15:15, 26th August 2003:

(assuming the barometer is plastic)

Wait for a VERY hot day and go to the roof. Hold barometer over the edge. Wait for the barometer to melt and stretch under its own wait to the ground. Cool the now stretched barometer and measure on the ground.

"Find a barometer that incidentally has a helicopter built around it"

hahahahahahahahhahahahahaaaaaaa

Use the barometer to lure lots of 4ft tall children (or midgets) to the roof top. When there hit them with the object of their admiration and tie them in a long chain over the edge of the building. Count the number of children or midgets it takes to reach the ground. As a bonus you get a nice screaming piece of modern surrealist art.
Posted by friday, 15:21, 26th August 2003:

BG when, like me, you have kids, counting how many steps there are in a building is just one tiny way to have fun and be educational, so yes I have done that before!! (Thanks for reminding me)
Posted by Sul, 15:22, 26th August 2003:

Campaign the barometer in the middle east as a sign of evil capitalism. Mount barometer on the top of the building. Wait for some mentalist to crash a plane into it. Watch the news reports as they say exactly how tall this tall building was and how many people died.
Posted by Victor Menendez, 15:25, 26th August 2003:

that rings a bell, are you sure you didn't steal that idea from someone else?
Posted by ilovebeerme, 15:26, 26th August 2003:

put the barometer in a bag.
Posted by Sul, 15:26, 26th August 2003:

Ask everyone in the building the height until someone in the know tells you. Show them your really cool barometer as a reward.
Posted by Sul, 15:27, 26th August 2003:

"that rings a bell, are you sure you didn't steal that idea from someone else"

I was perfecting on your idea.
Posted by beargod, 15:32, 26th August 2003:

rip the barometer apart and stick it together to make it as long as possible, put it over the edge and see how tall the building is
Posted by Sul, 15:32, 26th August 2003:

Find an autistic kid with 1. the uncanny ability to tell you the height of the building just by looking at it and 2. Collects barometers.
Posted by beargod, 15:34, 26th August 2003:

Carve a ruler into the side of the barometer and measure a piece of string to that lengthuse the strig to measure all the way up to the top, and this is ingenious cos then you can go round corners if you need to
Posted by beargod, 15:34, 26th August 2003:

Use the barrometer to make a scale model of building, measure model
Posted by Sul, 15:35, 26th August 2003:

Going round conrners would not help. You need the actual height.
Posted by beargod, 15:36, 26th August 2003:

Bash chays head in with the barometer, cut him up with the barometer then use his insides to measure the building
Posted by beargod, 15:36, 26th August 2003:

Sorry SUl, but the bulding might have corners going up
Posted by ilovebeerme, 15:36, 26th August 2003:

Work out the surface area of the building. Buy a known volume of paint and paint the building. Work out how much paint it takes to cover 1.38m and then use the ratio to find the height. The barometer can be used to pressurise the bank manager into giving you loads of cash for paint. Use yellow paint.
Posted by Sul, 15:38, 26th August 2003:

If it has corners going up you wont get the exact height. You'd end up adding more height onto it.
Posted by beargod, 15:40, 26th August 2003:

That is true mr Sul
Posted by friday, 15:46, 26th August 2003:

There is a pyschic who lives around the corner from me who swears by her barometer, she is a specialist in determining heights of buildings. We could ask her.
Posted by Sul, 15:48, 26th August 2003:

Or we could use Batman's Si'Kick, Robin

sorry
Posted by beargod, 15:50, 26th August 2003:

we could use the barometer as a time machine, go back and change the height of the building, and every building to 10 foot, then we know the building is ten foot high
Posted by cal, 16:03, 26th August 2003:

walk 100 barometer lengths from the building. measure angle of eye whilst lying down (with barometer) and looking at the top of the building. caclulate using pythagorous therom
Posted by cal, 16:06, 26th August 2003:

fold paper over lots of times until it is the same width as the barometer. cut round barometer. un-fold paper. you now have a chain of barometer cut-outs. go to roof of building. dangle paper from edge. see how many barometers are needed to reach the ground. measure size of single barometer. multiple. enjoy

Just to draw MathsBoy(TM)'s attention to an important point:

"A funny answer is better than a serious one."
Posted by cal, 16:07, 26th August 2003:

place (gamma) radioactive isotope with know rate of decay at the base of the building. measure level of gamma radiation in barometer. place barometer on roof of building, directly above radioactive isotope. leave for an hour. measure level of gamma radiation in barometer. calculate height
Posted by chandler, 16:07, 26th August 2003:

"go to root of building" ? :)
is that the roof or the base?
Posted by cal, 16:08, 26th August 2003:

smash window of city planners office with barometer. locate plans for building. read height
Posted by cal, 16:10, 26th August 2003:

URGH. i knew you'd say that, fucking pedant. but if you actually read, my solution isn't actually serious. it doesn't really use the barometer. so fuck off :)
Posted by chandler, 16:12, 26th August 2003:

the statement still stands:

"A funny answer is better than a serious one."

someone call me when he writes a funny one.

I still think this is really funny.
Posted by Brock, 15:08, 7th February 2004:

(and just to be enormously, pedantic, as is my wont)

Vic? Every helicopter (and plane, airship, etc) has a barometer in it. That is how altimeters work, by measuring the change in air pressure from a known altitude point. Therefore, although your answer was funny at first, it rapidly falls into the category of correct whan faced with such information.

Sorry, my pedantry chip was inadvertantly fired up by a static shot from my cheap jumper/carpet combo :(
Posted by Abe Frohman, 16:22, 7th February 2004:

Yep, that was the problem with these otherwise plausible ideas.

P.S. I don't care, Bolton are winning :)
Posted by Brock, 16:25, 7th February 2004:

At high rise measuring? Wow.
Posted by tommorris, 23:20, 7th February 2004:

1. Put barometer in "bigifying" machine (a machine that magically makes things bigger).
2. Take the scale of the barometer out.
3. Use it as a measure.
