HA HA HA
In otherwords Microsoft half-inched some software from another company when they had no patent on the software, then they got the patent for that software and are getting Microsoft to remove it from their browser
So then the browser won't work aswell or as intended and seeing as that browser is used by the majority It will have to change the standard of somethings, or something stupid like that

Try to ignore everything BG says. he obviously hasn't read the story.
Someone, along time ago, applied for a patent that should never have gone through. Since then ALL browsers (not just IE, you idiot) have gone on to include this feature (and it's the concept that's patented - not the code). this feature is the ability to view video/flash/audio via the web. pretty big deal. don't quite know how they can work around this.
very likely, this isn't a straight patent infringement since the browser authors didn't know about the patent until the holder sued in 1999. the hunt is currently on to prove prior art and get the patent removed.
Ah, so correct me if i'm wrong but if the infringement is held up it will mean sweeping changes to the internet and the way sites are designed?
ok, i suppose its a good job that microsoft have enough money to A: crush the case under Bill Gate's armoured cuban heel. or B: buy off the infringed company then.

This patent is really dumb. No, really, really dumb. I mean, in the US there's a requirement that it be "non-obvious" but with OLE and OpenDoc and all that cock preceding it, it's hardly unique and non-obvious.
