I'm surprised we didnt discuss this yesterday.

So MSN have/will shut down their chat services to protect the kids from paedophiles.

How noble of them - if this is the truth. Call me cynical but MSN have been starting to charge for all their previously free services. First it was "ooh we now want you to pay for all the cool features on hotmail". Then they wanted you to pay for the MSN browser thing. Now they want you pay to use the chat services. But they're doing it for the kids. Like fuck are they!

What does everyone else think?

Thats a cynical but perfectly plausible theory.

Are you calling me a muddyfunster ASL?
Posted by Pauly, 12:21, 25th September 2003:

I think it will help in the online war against paedophiles, but not stop them.
Even charging 10p per month will mean that users will have to provide some sort of ID, but then that ID could be stolen.

I didn't realise there was an online war against paedophiles (note spelling) are we winning? (when i say 'we' i'm putting 'us' on the anti-paedophile (note spelling) side.
Posted by Victor Menendez, 12:25, 25th September 2003:

Posted by Pauly, 13:34, 25th September 2003:

Don't you just love people who correct your spelling whilst making a hash of the rest of their post?

:o)

Sounds a bit like me!

Carol Vorderman wants all other service providers to do the same now, I think she is on the payroll of Microsoft or something...
Posted by Pauly, 14:01, 25th September 2003:

"STOP!
Vorderman: Web Police!"
Posted by Sul, 14:02, 25th September 2003:

Yes because EVERY chat server is going to close down or enforce a pay-service. :/

Just dont let kids on the internet. That'll solve the problem.

If parents let their kids on the internet they should expect to be bummed.

(bummed thing coined from a post on redmaidens site)

It is the job of (a) the Police, to catch these people, and (b) the parents, to DO SOME FUCKING PARENTING!

Personal issue of mine :o)
Posted by Sul, 14:42, 25th September 2003:

DO SOME FUCKING PARENTING how exactly?

Tell them not to go meet their friend off the internet who's probably convinced them not to tell said parents about any contact they've had anyway?

Watch everything their kid is typing?

Parents can be highly vigilant but they can still have a highly naive kid.

I went to meet a boy I met on the internet when i was 16. I didnt tell my parents. They wouldn't know till this day had I not told them. I did take some friends though to make sure he wasnt a 50 year old rapist. He wasnt. So really you can't blame the parents. The only solution would be to ban kids from the internet altogether (it'd do this site a few favours!). Oh and AOLs so called 'parental controls' are inneffective as they were on when I met said boy.

Any one who's stupid enough to go and meet a stranger alone and having not spoken to them on the phone is probably doing evolution a favour if anything unfortunate happens to them.

Did I say that outloud?! (covers mouth, looks ashamed)
Posted by Pauly, 15:53, 25th September 2003:

I understand that they cannot be there 24/7, but people that blame things like rap music for school shootings really, really piss me off.
Posted by frankie, 16:24, 25th September 2003:

Where on earth did that come from?! Personally I blame LARP for school shootings ;)
Posted by bored at work, 16:34, 25th September 2003:

It seems to be a little off the mark considering your last reply had nothing to do with the internet!
Posted by Pauly, 16:56, 25th September 2003:

It's not just that - it's just that nowadays no responsibility for a childs actions fall with the parents any more.
Posted by bored at work, 17:06, 25th September 2003:

Fair comment. I suppose parents should be far more culpable for childrens behaviour.
Posted by Pauly, 17:09, 25th September 2003:

And if children break the law, I cannot understand why we don't sling their arses into jail. Real jail, not pretend 'kiddie' jail.
The sooner we drum into their heads that being thieving little bastards will only get them in the shit the better.
Posted by bored at work, 17:13, 25th September 2003:

It's bad, under 16's can't be done for anything really. Most of them know that as well which makes matters worse! You should see the kids round my area, most of them dont give a fuck about anythign at all!
Posted by frankie, 18:05, 25th September 2003:

Rather than trying to find a cure (by punishing people), surely some sort of preventative measures should be taken? Punishment isn't the answer, you have to keep the kids busier, give them better educations, more opportunities etc.
Lets have less of this Ken Livingstone kind of attitude now please.

"not pretend 'kiddie' jail"

Have you seen kiddie jail? Woah.

Have you? Duuuude

I met some people of the internet when I was 16, although a few of them were gay, I didn't get bummed, which was good. Made some very good friendships with some of the people I met, and some very fun relationships with some of the girls that I met.
Posted by tommorris, 12:44, 26th September 2003:

I haven't seen them in 'the flesh', but I have seen images of them. And they aren't just fun and games like some of the people make out.

LARP is vile.
