I hope someone can help me out.
We have a network with a proxy server at work. Since moving to new offices they have decided not to tell people the new name of the proxy server unless you have a good reason. Apparently wanting to chat to people on yahoo messenger is not a good reason !
Browsers etc. work fine using the automatically detect settings options, but yahoo needs a proxy name and port number (which I'm pretty sure is still 8080).
Now I haven't had much time to chat or post, but it's getting on my nerves that I won't be able to !
Can anybody tell me if there is a way for me to find out the name of the proxy server ?
Thanks.
At the proxy at work i got the proxy by going to tools in internet explorer, then going to internet options, then connections, then LAN settings, the proxy details url (a .pac file) is written in a box there hopefully, go to the url and download the pac file, the details of the proxy should be there, using port 3128.
But then, i could be completely wrong :)

Unfortunately, the only thing entered in the LAN settings is the ticked box with Automatically detect settings.
But thanks :)

Try this - not sure if it will work on your setup.
Start / Run and type 'cmd'.
A window will open, in this, type : tracert
www.google.com
then paste the results.

The best thing to do is pretend that you fancy one of the guys in IT, seduce him into giving you the proxy details!
Ah, the good ole technical approach! God knows how you got round it then!

Download a port scanner from the web - set it up to check though your network for the port of 8080 and set it going.

plindoe: that's exactly what I was trying to avoid ;)
jlittle: I'm an idiot, port scanner is way over my head (unless someone cares to explain) sorry
there are other ways around it:
- we also have a wireless LAN without a proxy. I can use yahoo on there (but then I can't get to my office information, cos of being outside the proxy/firewall)
- MSN still works, as it apparently uses the IE info (but I like yahoo better :P )
But I can't stand not being able to win this ! :D

As much as my work annoys me, I don't really feel good about putting all this info up on the web (cos I dont know if it can be used to do harm) so I will take it down later.
OK, you don't have WINS enabled so this probably won't work. If you did have WINS enabled, ping -a 10.38.44.1 would return the name of your proxy server. You might find, however, if it's an ISA server that it returns something like arseface.capgemini.nl in which case, arseface is the name of the server. But, if you don't have WINS enabled, you can't address the server by name.

ok, that ping returned with the ip-adress not the name, but I'm definitely going to try that on my laptop (instead of this imaged desktop I'm working on now) and see if it works there. Maybe try to enable WINS if it doesn't.
Does this mean that the Default Gateway = the proxy server ?
cos I always thought we had lots of gateways and only one proxy server here.
so you can get on here, you can get on MSN, you can browse generally, what exactly was the problem again?

Not always, but 99 times out of 100.
