I'd have put RPG's a little higher on the list.
Notice that programming didn't appear...
Posted by
WarHead, 23:04, 20th October 2003:
Probably because the list was compiled (no pun intended) by a programmer.

Well programming isn't a past time as it has some actual value. Gaming (and comics and CCG's) has no marketable use as I lamentably know. Unless you are looking to work in that industry that is.
Also i feel that RPG's are excessivly over rated for geekyness, they use them in theatrical training, management courses and an oodleplex of other places. Most of the anti agruments and associated hate/dislike comes from mis-informed opinion and a general unwillingness to accept other ideas and opinions. This doesn't stop the d20 system fellating bovines.
Posted by
arsepuppy, 16:41, 22nd October 2003:
Yeah! Fuck the d20!
what's the d20?
Posted by
arsepuppy, 16:43, 22nd October 2003:
Programming's a skill rather than a hobby, that's why it isn't there. Still doesn't negate it's inherent geekiness though ;p
Posted by
tommorris, 16:48, 22nd October 2003:
d20 is a dice with twenty sides.
Posted by
arsepuppy, 16:49, 22nd October 2003:
Crikey. Is six not enough?
Posted by
tommorris, 16:52, 22nd October 2003:
Unfortunately not. For further information watch the episode of Futurama starring Gary Gygax. He has a strange belief that you can solve all of the worlds problems with many sided die.

arsepuppy, 16:53, 22nd October 2003:
"Orc takes 20 hit points"
"Odin gains 30 experience points"
"You sunk my battleship"
Never understood all that really.
Posted by
tommorris, 16:54, 22nd October 2003:
Just to explain, in RPG terminology (I'm told), a dice is referenced as a
xD
y. x being the number of dice, and y being the number of sides of that dice. Therefore it's quite possible to have 2D6 as a variable that something in the game relies on - A happens if 2D6 > 6 and B happens if 2D6 < 6. That sorta thing.

plindoe, 16:55, 22nd October 2003:
Hattrick aint on there either, woohoo!!!
Posted by
arsepuppy, 16:56, 22nd October 2003:
*none the wiser*
;)
I notice the 'Y' starts working when you get on your high horse.
Posted by
tommorris, 16:58, 22nd October 2003:
Hit points? Doddle - each instance on the field has a certain maximum, then when they are attacked, HP = HP-damage.
Experience points? When someone is defeated in a fight, there is a set number of points that kill is worth. As someone gets more exp they get advantages like their HP increases or strength or any other number of variables.
(Disclaimer: the extent of my RPG geekery is playing Final Fantasy 7-10, which rule)

Furries should have been #1.
Posted by
arsepuppy, 17:01, 22nd October 2003:
FF7 annoyed me. One one hand, you had such an amazingly beautiful world to explore with good plotlines, good music, lovely graphics and so on, but the whole geeky "materia" shite put me off in a big way. A massive shame. Ditto FF8. That had a wonderful trailer but the game ultimately left me cold.

arsepuppy, 17:01, 22nd October 2003:
I wasn't even aware of the furries thing :/

tommorris, 17:05, 22nd October 2003:
Furries scare the shit out of me. I can just about understand most fetishes - but people impersonating animals whilst having sex with each other is mindfuck.

Mr.Nishi, 17:05, 22nd October 2003:
Nope it's the ctrl+v (unfortunately my e and 0 are giving up the ghost aswell):-P
Hit points = how much slagging a givern object (human, orc, harmless peasant etc...) can take before it breaks/dies.
Experience = how much you learn from slagging other things.
Try
this I post as %*%$*&% it should help anone interested*...

Tommorris - In that case, can you understand the whole "nullo" fetish? Scary shit, that.

For some reason, I imagine Chay being a Furry. Dressing up as a red panda, for example.

Mr.Nishi, 16:10, 23rd October 2003:
And you know this how :-s, also i think it goes against the idea. Animals have rather obvious male reproductive organs, so wouldn't the be wanting to emulate that aswell?
Do female animals have obvious reproductive organs?
Posted by
Mr.Nishi, 16:42, 23rd October 2003:
They are usuall internalized, some animals do have more obvious female reproductive organs but i can't think of any to hand, and nothing a furry would be interested in (I hope).
Bah, I neglected to include the word 'male' there, Rather ruining the point i was trying to make. That'll learn me eh?
Ah you gotta love Dungeons and Dragons :)
