Walking around the streets tonights. The lights flying over my head. The loud explosions. The smell of spent pyrotechnics. I can imagine it was just like spring in iraq.
Oh and the burning effigies of course
November the fifth has come and gone
But thoughts of it still linger
I held a banger in my hand
Has anyone seen my finger?

so, um, what's nov 5 all about?
all it is over here in australia is my mate dave's b'day - and nope, no fireworks.
For some reason, we British celebrate some bloke failing to blow up the houses of parliament.
Go figure.

Aren't we actually celebrating his death, when he was burnt atop a large fire?

In 1605 there was a plot to blow up the houses of parliament, the Catholics were unhappy with Protestant rule.
Some people celebrate the fact that the plot failed the rest celebrate the effort!
It was like frickin Beirut round my way last night*
*Not actually like beirut at all but you know what I mean. Bloody kids. Bah humbug!

Last night was a nightmare. I was trying to get some sleep and next door were blowing about 2 thousand pounds up in the air!
It drove me nuts. Dudley the kitten didn't bat an eyelid. Infact I think he wanted to go out and chase them!

I went to bed about midnight and could still hear the high pitched squeels of fireworks in the distance.
I woke up this morning and could
still hear them going off. It wasnt until I got up to check the time that I realised it was my boiler. :/

I thought we burnt him, but its the attempt that he was going to blow up the parliament that we celebrate thats why we have the explosives. I went to langly today, as soon as we parked the car some pikey set of a firework behind the fence

No, we have the explosives because we learnt how to make them, and thought "Ooh, that will be cool on Guy Fawlkes Night!", we certainly aren't celebrating the attempt.
In the olden days they used to burn barrels of tar and stuff on the streets - I'll bet that got banned pretty quickly.
Why would we celebrate the attempted destruction of the Houses of Parliament anyway? For one thing it would have been a disaster, and for another he didn't even manage to do it. Maybe in 10 years we could all fly model airplanes into Lego buildings on September 11th...
I've often wondered why he didn't do it, because if stories are to be believed, they caught him in the cellars of the Houses, which was full of explosives. Did he forget his matches or something?
