Holy shit balls.
If this lives up to expectation it is going to be just a bit good. The first one was just stunning, the second a bit confused but then it's allowed to be cause its in the middle.
The trailer made me go all goosebumpy. Gandalf single handed charging down Nazgul and those Olyphant type things! I nearly weed myself too.
You never read the books ILBM?

I was quite glad the films didn't have as much singing as the books.

Yeah but that's just Tolkein for you, you can overlook the songs or just scan read them. The book is better than the film in some ways cos it has more and if you read the books it gives you loads of stuff you can cuss down Frodo "Girlpants" Baggins with when girls go, 'he's so cute' you can say that he and sam are more than just friends and leave them running and crying.....
Just don't like Frodo.

All they do is walk and walk and sleep and eat and walk and walk and sleep and eat and walk and walk and sleep and eat and walk and walk and sleep and eat and walk and walk and sleep and eat and walk and walk and sleep and eat and walk and walk and sleep and eat and walk and walk and it gets very dull.

grim... you forgot the bit where Frodo stumbles over a small pebble.
but its ok cos he carrys on walking and then has something to eat and a quick sleep

Bloody LOTR. Grrr

Looks like utter shite, just like the other two films and the books. Tolkien is so overated.

I dunno, I think where they sleep for a while is fantastic, that and Frodo when he complains. It's just a remarkable piece of narrative.
Yeah i read the books. I got the edition with the Alan Lee illustrations for christmas about 6 years ago. Not read that edition though!
The trailer looked spectacular. It has drawn me in more than any other film series I have seen. It is so fantastical in atmosphere that I can't see anything in that genre ever bettering it (although something always does). The first one was just beautiful. Better than Jaws. Better than The Third Man. Better than Happy Gilmore ;) .
Neither films nor books are over-rated, at least not by me. It's not the best book ever written but its the most involving and exciting that I've ever read. I felt like crying when i finished it and couldn't see what came next. I figure they all got drunk and then there was some hot lesbo action.

Personally, I liked parts 1 & 2, and I've read the books many times since I were a nipper. It's a pity they've had to cut such a lot for the films (e.g. no mention of Tom Bombadil in Pt1) but the thing would have been just too long if they hadn't cut it the way they did. Looking forward to part 3.
Did anyone see the dire attempt at making a film of Pt1 about 20 years ago? A mixture of animation for the main characters, but the battle scenes were filmed with real people and then coloured in to fit in. The one whopping mistake was that Saruman was called Aruman for about half of the film, and then changed to his proper name half way through (or vice versa).
It bombed and they never made parts 2 or 3.
Yeah it was done by a russian animation studio taht went out of business. It was pretty bad.
I don't mind most of the stuff they have cut out. Tom Bombadil is great but pretty much unecessary. As a story the book, obviously, works better but Tom Bombadil in a film version would have made it seem a bit stop start. I didn't like the way they changed Faramir as it is a fundemental differance in his character, never mind though he still kicks some ass.
The films are too short I agree but then people would have got pissed off waiting for 4 or 5 parts and Peter Jackson would have died! The extended edition of the first one adds nearly an hour and makes it a completely different film. All three extendeds together should be about 13 hours, which is quite sufficient!
I just find the level of detail in the films astonishing. The inside of the armour is acid etched! A chest that appears on film for about 4 seconds was hand carved inside and out and differant versions were made for human and hobbit. The tip of every arrow is decorated. Who noticed that! Its grander in scale than anything that has gone before.
Told you i spremed.

Sounds a bit OTT to me. I mean they can do all that but still didn't spot Saruman's trainers. ;0)

The animated one was made by Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, Cool World, etc), non?
(Even though the actual animation work was done in Russia etc.)
I heard it ends abruptly due to the budget being suddenly cut completely.
yeah they missed out most of book two and all of three. It was toss. Might have been good if they had finished it.

You probably all know this but a live action LOTR film series was originally planned in the late 60's with The Beatles in the main roles - FACT.

WarHead the Cartoon film was book one and half of book two, they were only going to make 2 of those, and I watched Gobbos dvd of it after seeing the first peter jackson film and it seemed that it got half of the storyline from the book and the other part of the stary line from the peter jackson film.
Red, the books are the best books written ever - FACT. Although this fact may be compromised when I read more books.
How could you not like the films they rocked, apart from half the story line missing It has to be the best two films for along time, and seeing as you like the really badly made Harry potter films, I cannot work out how you cannot like these films. ROCK!
And the tom bombadil part was needed to show how the hobbits got the swords and I can't think of a cooler thing then seeing Tom and the willow tree :D
The cartoon one took half the story from the Peter Jackson film? The cartoon that was made in the seventies?

sure - if you compare LOTR to harry potter then is doesn't seem so shit. but if you compare it to some of the good films from the last two years you'll notice that it *is* shit.

Red, the books are the best books written ever
Working in a bookshop and buying a large amount of books I can confirm that this, in my opinion, is not true.
One of my favoutrite books has to be Patrick Suskind's Perfume but I could name many others that are brilliant. LoTR is poorly written.
[edit] Chay made me edit this because he is truly pernickity
Depends how you compare it cal. It is no Lantana or Amelie but it is an entirely differant film. IMO it succeeded in creating a wonderful world, that is totally make believe. It works so well an is entirely believable within the parameters set by the book and Tolkein.
Aside form that I think the direction was excellent, the script top notch, the acting mostly well above par and the special effects and costumes were fantastic. It was a fantastical world and not supposed to be compared to ours. It's the only adaptation I've seen that was almost exactly (except Boromir) as i imagined it when i read it. I guess that goes a long way.
Redmaiden I don't see how you can say it is poorly written! It may not be your taste in style but the man was the head of English at Cambridge for decades! He new more about the english language than most. You might find it meandering and flowery but that doesn't equate to poorly written. Whether they are the best ever is just down to personal opinion but they are certainly not poorly done.

Red - there's 30+ years difference between Perfume and LotR, which did what no other book had ever done for its genre.. whether or not it's been outwritten by books that have 3 extra decades of authoring in similar areas to draw on like Perfume is a valid point, but it deserves recognition for what it did, when it did it.
IMHO, it's probably the best book I've ever read, but I still cringe at how often the phrases "At lenght" and "presently they came to..." crop up >_<
To all of the Harry Potter and LotR fans out there, try reading Phillip Pullmans' "His Dark Materials" trilogy. New Line bought the film rights to them a year ago, word on the street is they're gonna be the next big project after Return of the King (and probably the Hobbit) is done and dusted.

Would not see the point of New Line doing a Hobbit as it's set before LOTR main films - if they were going to do that, surely it would of been released before the first one?
Personally, I like the Harry Poter books and films - even if they are aimed at children. I also liked the two LOTR films, and hope to see the 3rd in the Cinema rather than on a DVD marathon like the last two.
They will certainly make a Hobbit film.

Believe it or not, Most of us aren't exactly rushing out to buy "Patrick Suskind's Perfume"
You mean.....fantasy? Weird. They could hardly be called Simon, Kev and Dougie and be on a grand quest to travel to Thailand on holiday for bit of a laugh.

Yay! Read Northern Lights on Friday and the Subtle Knife yesterday. Both were fantastic. I can't believe Harry Potter is up to this standard!

I thought he was very ill. Not sure though.
