I was going to send Cal an email but I thought that's taking the piss so I thought I'd post here instead and see if anyone can offer me some advice.

I am now working in a large building with 7 floors and lots of users and a poor quality Intranet. I am about to update the staff directory on the Intranet to be more informative and I though it'd be a good idea to add an SVG based map showing where people are located in the building.

The I realised I don't know anything about SVG - I know how it works and I can do the XML stuff but SVG is new to me. So I've been looking for some primers and samples so I can work out if I'm going to be able to this or if I should just stick to drawing boxes and big arrows in PaintShop.

So, anyone seen any primers, tutorials or samples I can look at or ideas on different ways I can approach this?

Thanks

because no one really uses SVG, there's not a lot of reference about it.

i like this reference:
www.zvon.org/xxl/svgReference/Output/ind...

there's the w3c spec of course:
www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/

you can of course use my wonderful svg graphs as a reference ;)

Thanks Cal. On closer inspection it does look like it's going to take me more than the 10 minutes I was hoping for...

Easier: Why not make a table background a plan of your building on a 50x50 cell (say) table, and put a gif in a cell to indicate someone sitting there?
That way people can change things easily if they move around, by simply clicking on a cell.

The 'Little Savages' map (if you remember that) worked like that.

if you're going down that route you may as well just css-p the chairs over an image in a position:relative div. gives you finer grained control, less html, and isn't deprecated.

Speaking of CSS, in the Plastic Bag theme, when you mouse-over a link for the first time in the menu bar on the left, it changes size - highly irritating.

don't use that style sheet/browser then

But I like the colours.

Okay - I'll choose another.

is it just me or is that file empty cal?
Posted by Grim..., 13:46, 26th November 2003:

Empty for me =/

I got the b3ta one instead.

it is empty - the default style sheet doesn't override anything in the master sheet:
