We've all heard the law that any York-born person can shoot a Scotsman with a bow and arrow within the city walls after dark.

What I want to know is if someone could actually get away with it. Is it true?

Not that I'm planning a murder or anything. (well I am sort of but not a real one)

Exactly the same with Welsh people in Chester.

Mind you, I'd start drinking bleach if I came from anywhere in Cheshire. Vile place, that.

I want to know which city has a similar rule for Scousers. I want to shake off my rustiness with the old archery on Cilla Black.

urban myth.

So you're saying I couldnt get away with it?

Isn't there an urban myth website you could check it on?

snopes doesn't mention these particular ones, but debunks some along the same lines:

It's far easier just to label than an "enemy combatant" then they have no legal rights at all. ;)

I read about those laws on dumblaws.com
Posted by eatmypiano, 23:17, 26th November 2003:

They are unrepealled laws but they're out of context now. England is no longer at war with either Wales or Scotland so you wouldn't be defending your country. You're more likely to be had up on a murder charge. It's still illegal to drive more than 50 sheep up fleet street. I haven't seen one recently and, in the context of modern law, you're more likely to be done for causing an obstruction if you took 51 sheep into fleet street than to be charged under a 500 year old law.

I mean... errr... can a york-born man shoot a scotsman and get away with it? :/

On the basis I am living in Chester for the time being (and did do for ten years prior to moving back here) The thing about shooting people inside the walls after midnight is still a law of some sort, as to what court it would stand up in is far beyond me! Most people here spend there time wearing addidas tracksuits and selling shite weed!

Shoot me?? No Yorkshire man will be shooting me!

Some of those old laws are great. That is all.

What old laws ILBM?
Posted by ilovebeerme, 11:33, 27th November 2003:

on dumblaws.com

Apparantly in scotland if you knock on somebodies door and ask to use their bog then they have to let you. Can't see it standing in court though :D

Theres one in a US state (tennessee maybe) which bans children from having 'unusual haircuts' . Nice one.

'It is illegal to be a drunk in possession of a cow. '

My favourite old things are Bills of Mortality

You can see on it that people died of such things as "Overlaid", "Mothered and shot", "Lethargy" and "Teeth and worms". 111 people died of thrush. No natural yoghurt in those days.

If someone comes to your door and asks for a glass of water and a slice of bread in England, you have to provide it if you can.

However, if you invite them in they are then your guest and you don't have to give them jack all!
