Aw Warhead you only love me for my money :-(
...but seriously do you mind if I ask a serious question? Why agnostic? Surely you have to have some sort of code to live by? And religeous principles provide that framework? I am interested in your opinion, but if you'd rather not give them here I don't mind. I'm not a religeous nut, really, although I may have given that impression.

Brock, 15:31, 22nd January 2004:
How about morals? Why do people believe that religion is the only acceptable defining power in terms of rules?
Is no-one confident enough that they can lead a decent life with out someone telling them how to do it? Not got any ideas of their own?
Posted by
Liandle, 15:40, 22nd January 2004:
But on what do you base your morals?
Posted by
Brock, 15:42, 22nd January 2004:
Education and my inherent opinion of right and wrong. Where do you think Religion got them from? From a really old book?
And who do you think wrote that book...
I could get quite rant-y about this, but don't take it all personally...;)
Posted by
Liandle, 15:49, 22nd January 2004:
One person's idea of what's right or wrong might differ from another's though? One culture might find it acceptable to kill one's brother if he sleeps with one's wife whereas we find that wrong?
no offense taken. all in the spirit of debate... :-)
Posted by
Brock, 15:56, 22nd January 2004:
They do that anyway!!!! They just claim it has religious grounding! Heard of Holy Jihadh (spelling?)? Wasn't that what they used as an excuse to try and kill Salman Rushdie for speaking out against the religion (sadly, can't remember which one it was...)
People disagree within religions all the time. Over trivial to serious things. That's why there are recognised 'factions' within most of the religions. So that they are allowed to disagree within a religion rather than fight each other to the death over who's right (like they used to!)
Posted by
Liandle, 16:00, 22nd January 2004:
It was Islam.
But you also get your idea of what's right and wrong from religious teachings...for example, You believe that it's wrong to kill someone. Why?
Posted by
Brock, 16:06, 22nd January 2004:
Because they have just as much right as me to be alive. They are an equal. That's not a religious view point, that's common sense and logic.
I do however believe in capital punishment if the crime is severe enough, and as long as there was a way to establish 100% guilt and sentient intent (as discussed elsewhere, i won't go into it again, check the archive).

Liandle, 16:10, 22nd January 2004:
What if that person does something really terrible to you? eg murders your mother or something equally awful. Wouldn't you feel like getting revenge?
Posted by
Brock, 16:16, 22nd January 2004:
Yup. Whole new ballgame then. Then that all depends on what they did, and whether or not I felt it made them less entitled to live than me.
BUT. I would know it was wrong. I just think in certain situations, my anger/grief would get the better of me. Right and wrong can only be a black and white issue with a clear and sober mind (not as in drink!).

...So you don't go to church or pray or anything? Do you believe in God?
Posted by
WarHead, 16:23, 22nd January 2004:
Deary me. All I said was 'agnostic' and all hell broke lose.
I live by a personal code which is to be humanitarian, tolerant and treat everyone with the respect they deserve. I never had a great deal of belief in religion, even when I was supposedly a Christian, and the more I learn about the universe, the less I believe that there is a god in any shape or form. Of course, I could be wrong, but I'll just have to wait and see.

Brock, 16:26, 22nd January 2004:

Do you believe when we die it all just ends?
Posted by
WarHead, 16:37, 22nd January 2004:
Yes.
Well, no, it goes on without us.
But our atoms will always be here .... or somewhere.
Posted by
Brock, 16:40, 22nd January 2004:
Course it all just ends (on an individual basis, good point WH).
We die. Everything in our bodies stops. We rot. End of. Our atoms become something else eventually, like rock, or river mud. Or just rotten stuff.

Oh, guys you've got to read them. Very interesting. I was a bit offended by something he said in the second one. He said Hitler would go to Heaven. That I found just too much. He said in a round about way that death was a wonderful thing, therefore Hitler did the jews a favour by killing them off. I know everyone is entitled to their opinons and all that...but I did find that offensive.

Nah, meant warhead. Only joking though. i don't see what the big deal is. Everyone dies, it's not like anyone is being picked on or singled out, is it?!
Of course, being agnostic suggests that you don't believe it's possible to prove (using human reason, at least) whether god exists or not. Which is a pretty reasonable position to have...
No idea Vic. Perhaps she is ill?
