Discussion » Newspaper Cartoons - Does Anyone Think They're Funny?

This is a read-only copy. The forum ran on iamcal.com from 2000 until its database was lost in 2016, and this topic was rebuilt from copies saved by the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. Some replies may be missing.

The title speaks for itself. I used to think Giles' stuff was quite funny, but a lot of that was to do with the detail in the background. But I never find today's comic strips even faintly amusing.

One more thing that has been destroyed by being done to death and back again, I reckon...

Shame, really.

I find Doonesbury (in the G2 section of the Grauniad or on the web) consistently funny because it's topical and rather biting. I find most of the stuff absolute shit though. Especially Garfield. I'd rather my intestines explode than have to even contemplate living in a world where Garfield has international syndication and general popularity.

On the mark re: Garfield, Thomas.

"nonchalant repartee"

hehe!

Dilbert.
Posted by tommorris, 16:04, 16th February 2004:

Yes, I was going to mention Dilbert but I didn't know whether it was actually syndicated by any papers in Britain. (I've always read it online)
Posted by arsepuppy, 16:05, 16th February 2004:

It is, but I think it's in the Express or Mail of all places.
Posted by Abe Frohman, 16:08, 16th February 2004:

The Express runs a strip which is about three weeks behind the online site's daily strip, I stopped buying it several weeks ago due to the predictable front page stories which every day took one of three forms:

1: War on Middle classes.
2: Tidal wave of Illegal Immigrants etc etc.
3: The European Union wants to steal your first borns soul.
Posted by tommorris, 16:08, 16th February 2004:

And by the sounds of it, I'll continue reading it online. If it was in any of the papers where the average IQ of the readership is above about 75, I might read it in dead-tree format.
Posted by arsepuppy, 16:10, 16th February 2004:

Ooh snobbery!
Posted by Abe Frohman, 16:10, 16th February 2004:

The Evening Standard usually recycles one of Gary Larson's less-funny Far Side cartoons on that idiot Victor Lewis Smith's page.
Posted by tommorris, 16:13, 16th February 2004:

Snobbery has a bad name but has some underlying principles that are quite respectable. I mean, you can hardly say that mocking the Daily Express is a bad thing.
Posted by arsepuppy, 16:13, 16th February 2004:

Ah, old VLS. What a fucking cunt he is.
Posted by tommorris, 16:15, 16th February 2004:

Watch out, we're going to be plagued by VLS apologists.
Posted by Abe Frohman, 16:15, 16th February 2004:

Yeah, He annoys me even more than Amanda Platell, Who can't finish a column without including the line 'When I was William Hague's spin doctor' As if that is some worthy accomplishment.
Posted by arsepuppy, 16:18, 16th February 2004:

I was referring to the IQ statement really though.

FWIW, I genuinely believe The Sun is worse than the Mail and Express combined. It's politics are more dubious and it's far more inciteful.
Posted by arsepuppy, 16:19, 16th February 2004:

It does have boobs in it though. And the gossip column is a laugh, with that overweight girl who writes it always going on about how fat and ugly everyone is apart from her, coupled with stories she nicked from popbitch.
Posted by tommorris, 16:21, 16th February 2004:

The Sun is the only newspaper which I've used as a replacement for bogroll.
Posted by arsepuppy, 16:22, 16th February 2004:

Nah, wouldn't do that, the ink rubs off onto your ass.
Posted by tommorris, 16:22, 16th February 2004:

And yes, at least with the Mail you know you've got a bunch of right-wing nutjobs, while The Sun takes the unenviable position of Official Blair Apologist.
Posted by tommorris, 16:22, 16th February 2004:

It was only in an emergency.
Posted by arsepuppy, 16:33, 16th February 2004:

I find it weird that on page 3 you have youngish girls showing their chesticles, and it's all "phwooar, eh lads?" and on the next page it's "THE OUTRAGE! John Leslie's girlfriend has sex with someone! SHOCK! Gets presenting slot on obscure fanny channel!". Yes, a channel, which you inexplicably show listings for instead of many more popular satellite channels in you TV guide. GYA fucking C you hypocritical bastards.

i quite like VLS
Posted by Uma, 16:45, 16th February 2004:

In Dilbert, I quite like that cat...i think he's the human resources manager.

HR are scum - FACT.
Posted by Uma, 16:49, 16th February 2004:

Finance and admin is worse...no...payroll.
Posted by arsepuppy, 16:52, 16th February 2004:

My shit-list:

1. HR
2. Finance
3. IT (no offence, Sul!)

Posted by Uma, 16:57, 16th February 2004:

Posted by Sul, 17:00, 16th February 2004:

Anyone want to talk about comic strips?

I work in I.T. too, btw
Posted by Uma, 17:03, 16th February 2004:

Do you guys get Kathy? That one makes me want to smack someone. Preferably Kathy.
Posted by WarHead, 17:07, 16th February 2004:

I dunno, I don't read the paper much any more, but I saw the stupid Metro this morning and happened upon its daft Nemi strip, and I remembered how much I hated nwespaper comic strips and how I hated, even more, that some dingbat was being paid to produce these things. My only consolation is that they're probably not being paid very much.
Posted by Uma, 17:11, 16th February 2004:

Ah, so that's what got the grumps on in you today? Hrrrumph! People also get paid to write people's horoscopes. Never did understand that, either.
Posted by WarHead, 17:12, 16th February 2004:

No, it's not that. I'm a grumpy old man ALL the time. (and proud of it!!!)

That was an ace show by the beeb, btw. 'Grumpy Old Men' I mean. Every dog damn word was true. Modern life is rubbish.
Posted by Gary, 18:43, 16th February 2004:

There are some great cartoons in the papers!

The topical ones in The Sun by Bill Caldwell always make me laugh. Hagar The Horrible (also in The Sun) is great, and Badlands, which features in the Daily Mirror, is absolutely hilarious.

Note: I don't actually read the Daily Mirror, I just read the Badlands cartoon (it's the best bit of an otherwise shite paper).
Posted by arsepuppy, 19:03, 16th February 2004:

Never quite understood which market they're after with that computer-generated football cartoon though. It seems like "Oh look! I've picked up a pirate copy of 'Poser'! Look what I can do with it!". The old fashioned nudey cartoon's appeal baffles me too. "Wow look! They like to get naked! *spooge*!".
Posted by tommorris, 19:10, 16th February 2004:

I'd agree with WarHead. The comments in Grumpy Old Men are true to a tee, especially from the ever-excellent Mr Self.
Posted by arsepuppy, 19:10, 16th February 2004:

My favourite cartoon is that "Littlejohn" one.

It's about a man who hates gay people, Muslims , disabled people, in fact, any minority group.

They've also done a female spin-off called "Lorraine Kelly"

second verse, same as first.
Posted by arsepuppy, 19:12, 16th February 2004:

I like Mr. Self and all, but he is the most intensely pompous and pretentious man alive. Use normal words, boy!
Posted by WarHead, 22:13, 16th February 2004:

Well, that's something to be grumpy about then, innit?
Posted by cal, 11:37, 17th February 2004:

i really like mantlepies:
www.mantlepies.com/cartoonstrip.html

i think it was briefly in the observer.
Posted by tommorris, 11:40, 17th February 2004:

I like userfriendly, but it would never be syndicated by a newspaper. Which is actually a pretty good thing, come to think about it.
