Hi,

Is anyone able to give me some advice re: Perl?

I am trying to install WebGUI on my Openbsd box - I got it working perfect at one point, and then all of a sudden it stopped working (I made a slight tweek to the httpd.conf - but only to ad index.pl to the Directory Indexing) - I'm baffled at what may be wrong!

So far, to get it working again, I have tried the following:

Removed and reinstalled WebGUI - Same error.
Removed and recompiled httpd (1.3.29 btw). Reinstall WebGUI - Same error.

The most annoying this is, it won't even give me an error, when I try and open up the page, it just doesn't display (can't find server IE error, although any other page works on the server, so it's not that). No errors in the Error log, and when I check the access log it's not even logging it ACCESS the page (although if I visit another page it does - even if I visit a non-existant address it logs it as a 404).

I'm stumped and now thinking that I may have a problem with my Perl install - the only reason I say this is because there is also a "testEnvironment.pl" script (http://www.exwebjunkie.com/test.txt) - when I first installed WebGUI, it was giving me a long output (right to the end when it was checking for the WebGUI Modules), but now, it only produces this:

WebGUI is checking your system environment:

Operating System ......................... Linuxish
WebGUI Root .............................. ..
Perl Interpreter ......................... OK
LWP module ............................... OK
HTTP::Request module ..................... OK
HTTP::Headers module ..................... OK
Digest::MD5 module ....................... OK
DBI module ............................... OK
Avalable database drivers ................ ExampleP, Proxy, Sponge, mysql
HTML::Parser module ...................... OK
Archive::Tar module ...................... OK
IO::Zlib module .......................... OK
Compress::Zlib module .................... OK
Net::SMTP module ......................... OK
Date::Calc module ........................ OK
Cache::FileCache module (optional*) ...... OK

* Please note that Cache::FileCache is not
optional in all environments (such as Mac
OS X). Also note, that Cache::FileCache
is not available for Windows style
environments due to limitations on those
systems.

So is stopping before checking for ImageMagick and the other needed mods.

Is there a way to test if my perl install has a problem, or does anyone with perl knowledge have any idea what I could try next?

Cheers

James

Hmm,

I think my mail has also stopped working - This could be due to the spamdaemon, which uses perl..

Hmm

OK - Mail problem fixed - was due to a module not being installed (not sure what happened to it!)

so what happens if you take your original modification out of httpd.conf?

It turns into a yellow squid looking creature and just disappears!

Same problem - I'm thinking at the moment that it may be a buggy Module somewhere - Maybe even the Cache::File, but not 100% sure how to uninstall perl mods - googling now.

Also gonna try the -d feature of perl, but never used it before so googling that aswell.

use CPAN:

perl -MCPAN -e shell

force install Cache::File

Cache::File was installed - the problem in the end was that I had a dodgy Module install of Image::Magick (well, PerlMagick) - once I removed it, it all seemed to work.

Don't talk to me about CPAN. I've pulled out so much hair installing Perl modules.

Makes yer arse sore if you don't use enough lube, doesn't it?

Brilliant! Someone has finally said something on this thread that makes the slightest bit of bloody sense to me!

w00t!

And to think, the last time I installed a CPAN module was in the library...

With the revolver and Colonel Mustard?
Posted by tommorris, 22:24, 10th March 2004:

Perhaps. I prefer the dagger myself.

Is this a bit of lead piping I see before me?

There wasn't any poison in that game was there? That'd be my choice

Actually i think there was... ?
Posted by Uma, 11:06, 11th March 2004:

No, I don't remember that. There was candlestick, rope, revolver, dagger, lead pipe and ...?

Spanners.

You could beat people to death with a spanner. The idea of someone wielding Arsepuppy around their head and bludgeoning someone amuses me somewhat, actually.

Ah, i've just remembered who Brock reminds me of, Kevin Spacey in 'The Usual Suspects'

What, the criminal genius that rules the entire underworld, and is only acting stupid, but is actually brilliant?

Yeah, I'll go with that...

Fifty points for arsepuppy's Pokémon reference.

well the stupid bit is coming across extremely well. as yet we are to see proof of the criminal genius bit. that and a criminal genius wouldn't have given himself away quite so easily, hence being a genius. unless you're double bluffing.

Yeah, you tool.

trim... : Cheers

Abe: I may be a tool, at least that means I am useful. You, on the other hand, are not. Unless you count being used as a paperweight.

A Gimlet, that's what you are. (small boreing tool)
Posted by Brock, 11:55, 12th March 2004:

I did initially think you were coming up with a regional variation type name for bradawl. However, I was incorrect.

gimlet noun [countable]

1 a tool that is used to make small holes in wood so that you can put screws in easily

2 gimlet-eyed/gimlet eyes if someone is gimlet-eyed, or has gimlet eyes, they look at things very hard and notice every detail

3 an alcoholic drink made with gin (1) or vodka and lime1 (1)

I would say that I could also correspond to definition 2. My vocab has been expanded, Abe. Ta. I like that word, it has a good ring to it, and you can really put some emphasis into it as an insult.

Although it is interesting that extensive use of definition 3 would preclude the ability to comply with definition 3. Well. Interesting if you don't get out much, like me.

:(

No problem.

(lime1?)

I dunno. I pasted it directly from the Longman Thesaurus/Dictionary page. Hence a quote and not my fuck up. I did assume '1st Definition' but that would be the (1) wouldn't it?

Maybe they could employ me as a proof reader for their on-line dictionary. That would be nearly as interesting as my current job.
