As part of the Brock push for helpful advice (make decisions for me please department),I am moving to work within commutable distance of the above towns...

Anybody lived there and have anything good/damning to say about any of them?

Nice town, low chance of getting stabbed/shot, nice nightlife (decent bars preferential to clubs, I am old, after all.) are basic options....

Any help?

/sits back for expected flurry of apathy (and abuse from Abe)

My mate Dr Foster doesnt speak very highly of Gloucester. Last time he went there it was pissing down; he stepped in a puddle, thinking it was only an inch or so deep, and it only went up to his fucking waist! He vowed never to bless that wretched place with his presence ever again.

My housemate is from Stroud, I'll ask him for you. I only went there once, but it was very hilly.

Update: According to Ripley's Believe it or not, the woman with the 2nd longest nipples in the UK lives in Stroud.

And, for reference, it is NOT hilly. I went there on the way through to Dursley the other day, and if you think it's hilly, I reckon you've never been to Wales or Oooooop North in your entire life. There is a bit of a gradient, but it's hardly what you'd call hilly!

why not get a house truck, then you never have to choose

My friend Alison used to live in Bristol. She once siad said there were only three good things about it
1. her boy was from there
2. his job there paid so much she didn't have to work
3. the music

Gloucester is a bit crap as far as night clubs go.
Posted by WarHead, 08:53, 24th May 2004:

That doesn't matter to Brock, he's never off iamcal long enough to go out anywhere.
Posted by Brock, 10:26, 24th May 2004:

Nah. I'm never here...

Bit of advice. Don't move to the South West if you can possibly avoid it. I was forced through my mother changing jobs to move down to Bristol area when I was pretty young (about 11). Maybe it's because I had great friends etc when I was living in Bucks, but I just found it really hard to get on with people down here. Mind you we live in a village outside of Bristol and they're all in the vein that if you didn't grow up here you shouldn't be here.

Bristol itself is a nice city, has some nice bars and clubs etc too and of course The Mall and Ikea if you're into that kind of thing. Housing is pretty expensive though depending on what area you are planning on living in. Mind you another up side is the Bombay Spice restaurant in Clifton. DAMNED nice.

I pretty much have to move there to keep with the job, and the 'dangly carrot' pay rise that I have been one sniff away from for a year :(

I never get on with anyone anyway, so it doesn't matter where I live, people still think I'm a cunt.

;)

Ah, but they don't know you are for certain. Not at first anyway.

I'll start putting up the posters with his slaphead on and the message:-

"I am a bald cunt, please beat me to death if you see me during your day"

Maybe with the image of a daisy stalk in the background.

Move to Bath, Bath rocks.
Posted by Brock, 15:08, 26th May 2004:

Have you lived there, then?
Posted by Grim..., 15:11, 26th May 2004:

It's a bloody long way from Gloucester though...
Posted by Brock, 15:21, 26th May 2004:

Well, I wasn't exactly expecting constructive advice from Abe.

Were you?

Surprised it was so lacking in vitriolic abuse, actually. he must have missed me.

Aaaaah

Four years, and its a twenty miniute drive to Gloucester.
Posted by Brock, 15:36, 26th May 2004:

I will be working in Dursley, though, which makes it a bit more of a trip. It's about half an hour (allowing for morning traffic) from Gloucester, so that may make the whole trip a bit far.

I can never be arsed to drive too far to and from work. It just pisses me off. Some people see it as enough of a break, but it still feels like being at work, to me, untill I am actually at home.

Meh.

You two should get a room. Gee Wiz.

Bath is 20 minutes from Gloucester?
Posted by Brock, 16:09, 26th May 2004:

The AA route planner does say it's 58 minutes. Far be it from me to disagree with you, Abe.

Bristol is ace, IMHO. (However, avoid St. Pauls and Hartcliffe as they is mad dodgy etc)

Good scene, good feel etc.

Gloucester + Stroud are a bit Penrith Tearooms really.

Although I also have to agree with Abe about Bath. Nice place, that.

Neighbours' home country of Australia (and also the United Kingdom where the show is very popular) are NOT totally populated by white heterosexual Christians... but Neighbours leads you to believe that they are. On the few occasions when characters from minority groups appear, they are usually treated poorly or as stereotypes. Remember the Indian, Vikram? He worked in the newsagent. Then he upped sticks and took his sister back to India for going out with a white man. How about the Chinese family? Julie Martin accused them of trying to eat her dog, and they were gone within a few months! I have only seen two gay characters in 15-or-so years: Macca the builder, and Mr. Watson the English teacher. For me, it is too late for Neighbours to rectify this. There is a shark blinking in disbelief as a new high-jump record is set, way above him

What about Jason Donovan?
Posted by WarHead, 09:37, 28th May 2004:

Was he a gay character when he was in Neighbours? I don't remember.
Posted by Grim..., 10:18, 28th May 2004:

No - he married Kylie.
Posted by Brock, 10:20, 28th May 2004:

*ahem*

Dale Winton married Nell McAndrew...

I married an alien.

Could be worse. Your wife married a Troll...

;)
Posted by Grim..., 11:39, 28th May 2004:

Yeah, but in Neighbours Scott wasn't gay.

Bath ROCKS! Bristol is better for night clubs though, unless things have really changed a lot since I was last there.

Grim: Not when the camera's were looking.

I reckon he was up Guy Pierce's back end the very minute the red lights went off, though.

Both of them frantically coupling in a rousing game of bum-darts.

Brock - you read the Doc's post, right?

Of course, you'd be forgiven for skipping over it... =]

"I have only seen two gay characters in 15-or-so years"

Not disagreeing. I reckon he just knew the camera's were there...
