I don''t 'get' it.
I've read several definitions, and I still don't get it.
i first ran across it in "the selfish gene" by richard dawkins (TOP book, btw)
essentially, just as a gene is a self-propagating portion-of-molecule, a meme is a self-propagating idea.
the idea replicates when one person carrying it communicates with another person. e.g. religion. e.g. baggy trousers halfway down your butt. e.g. cigarettes

No, come on, I'm determined to understand what it is that makes it different from anything else. Explain it to me in plain English, there's a good chap.
wow, incredible simil-post there. both on the 27th of May too
well, an idea exists only in people's brains. you can't touch it. it's not a 'thing'
you can't touch religion, for example. but it's real, and it replicates when so constructed (only a few are actually designed to replicate). so it's a meme.
I don't believe in memes.
so any concept which exists only in people's minds but which spreads among people is a meme
doc: everyone's being saying that lately
heh
everybeing's been saying that lately

I thought a meme was, as far as the world of blogging was involved, something that everyone suddenly started using, like a google search of their site, or a drop-down box with their links, or something.
I didn't think it could be a website, it has to be something that someone can have.
I could be very wrong, of course.

See!! You can't bloody agree what it is.
And don't start me off on blogs either.
yeah, pretty much. so far as the blogoverse goes.

'all your base' was a meme
wh: pay attention there! naughty boy. an idea replicating by net instead of by face-to-face conversation is not a different thing.
those quizzes are blog-memes
Posted by
WarHead, 15:00, 27th May 2004:
Are you saying it's just a shared idea?
pretty much
but the key thing is: it spreads. like a gene takes the pattern for its own distribution with it, a meme will spread itself without substantially changing

WH I kinda see it kinda like a fad
someone makes something up, maybe an injoke like !!!11 and then another person sees it and then they use it on flickr and then 20 more people use it and they carry it to some other place
I wondered the same thing as su, when is it a meme not just an injoke/something youve heard somewhere and you like. Maybe it is related to how widespread it is

Miki, thank you, I will have your babies.
How come it took someone from across the channel to explain this in plain English?

I know you know it was just an expression of my extreme gratitude for explaining what the natives were unable to.
I'm not surprised, actually. I went to Holland with my school when I was 11 and everyone, including junior school kids, seemed to speak better English than we did.
Sorry, in my spare work time i am working on 'the perfect post' where i can insult as many people as possible with the greatest economy of words. Just testing.

as saltation said, to learn about memes read dawkins'
the selfish gene (and if you like the genetics side, read
the extended phenotype, but beware - it's heavy going) and then read susan blackmore's
the meme machine whish is also an excellent book.

I just wanted a quick and simple explanation for a slow old bugger like me to know what 'memes' were in the context used here.
When I read that "
Susan Blackmore makes a case for the theory that the inner self is merely an illusion created by the memes for the sake of replication" I lose interest.

HAHAHA
I laugh because that's exactly where I clicked "X" too. :)
I always attrubited a meme to a bandwagon. A single thought that morphed its way across a variety of media until someone turns around and declares it a cliche (straplined before of course).
I quote
A meme is
a piece of viral information - one you've heard it, you just have to
pass it on. A good example of a meme is the "All your base are belong
to us". As fun/entertaining/annoying as they can be, they are of
interest to postmodernists because they are a perfect example of the
self-contained signs, empty signs, signifiers without a signified.
