I'd like help with tactics to change the subject in a converation, please. And I'd also like some cake, but the subject-changing advice will suffice nonetheless. Thank you.

"ooh look, a potato"

"sooo, that hitler was a bad man wasn't he"

etc
Posted by reitsma, 01:48, 10th August 2004:

no, chay, you have to be smoother than that!

"hey, this conversation reminds me - i'm due for my colonic irrigation tomorrow. Have you ever had one?"

OR, this one you should especially like:
"gee... i'm hungry. Do you know where i can get some cake?"
Posted by jeffld, 03:56, 10th August 2004:

If with a woman:

"I know, we could go shopping at the mall."

If with a man:

"I'm sick of this subject, let's talk about something different."

If with a child:

"How about some cake?"

shameless plagiarism.

the only probelm with this one is that the changed subject is often worse than the original.

From what I've seen of 'I, Robot' is bears no resemblance whatsoever to Asimov's original stories, which were very thought provoking and entertaining. It sounds like they've just used the title and produced a rather bad action flick. Shame.

damm the only other movie on that i havn't seen is King Arthur
and well apart from the eye candy, it doesn't sound like much of a go
Posted by Alfie, 13:29, 12th August 2004:

I, Robot is great.
They have pitched it just right. Mr Smith isn't too over the top. The clips that they show on the trailer put unfair emphasis on his "quips"

The robots are stunning and it's very entertaining.

I went along assuming they would ruin it all and make it all jokey like MIB but they did good.

King Arthur I am reliably informed is SHIIIITE
Posted by Alfie, 13:30, 12th August 2004:

oh but i agree there was plenty of product placement, on a par with the bond films :)
Posted by Alfie, 13:32, 12th August 2004:

the thing is the story was written independently of the original books, then the company got rights for the originals so made a story combining them. Still works well as a film though.
Posted by su, 13:38, 12th August 2004:

At least with King Arthur i won't get product placement
Posted by WarHead, 13:42, 12th August 2004:

I'll take your word for it until it's on TV. On the strength of what I've heard so far I'm not going to pay to see it.
Posted by Victor Menendez, 13:44, 12th August 2004:

Go and rent Excalibur instead.

(The film, not the mythical sword)

Or even better, go read Bernard Cornwells excellent Arthurian Trilogy.

I add my vote for "I Robot", it was good, and had certainly some of the implications and moral issues of the book. Although I haven't read the book, just a summary, so i can't comment too much about it.

The product placement was shocking, though. Fact of life these days, though, sadly.

The original 'I, Robot' was a collection of short stories, as was sequel, 'The Rest Of The Robots.' Both well worth reading.

The robot's name in the film is "Sonny", was my interpretation. I think that the Muslim link is fantasy, and shoehorned in to imply that the USA is trying to suggest that the Muslim world is evil. And being as

PLOT SPOILER!!!111 LOOK AWAY NOW!

the robot turns out to be the good guy/ all round hero, I reckon whomever came up with that is a sensationalist twat. I reckon it was changed to generic name "Sonny" because stupid fat arsed Americans would never be able to relate to "Nestor" as a 'person's' name and so assume it was part of the robot's product name and miss the humanising element of the fact it has a name.

brock: not shoehorned, just what it sounds like when you know what the name was in the book.
given the subsequent noise i've seen about the Racist/comeuppance theme, it's possible it's supposed to be Sonny as an UncleTomism -- thanks

Posted by Alfie, 23:01, 12th August 2004:

Nestor was the robot type NS-2 in some of the short stories that made up the book. There were several robots in that i think. This was originally called something like "Hardwired" then they got the rights to use the 3 laws and what they wanted from the books. So they sort of plugged bits and pieces around this screenplay.

or something.

it's the fact that we are having three days of sun, then a massive storm then three days of sun then another massive storm and so on.

Very strange.

my parents ended up wading through water a foot deep (a mix of rain water and sewerage) in a branch of New Look because the town they were in was flooded so bad they couldnt swim back to the car.
