Afternoon always feels like anytime after lunch
Yeah. I tend to divide the day by lunch/neighbours, whichever I decide to enjoy more. Generally it's neighbours because lunch is usually a load of old bits of red wax.

i made a cat out of red cheese wax today
what, Tony Hart stylee, or God stylee?
Posted by
su, 12:46, 12th August 2004:
kitten style, with ears and a tail, and copper wire for the whiskers

Surely, noon is when the clock strikes 12, so after noon is the instant after it strikes. And for those of us who answer the phone as part of our duties, we always say, 'Good afternoon' immediately after 12.

Yeah:
"Good afternoon! Warhead's telephone flagellation service!
Who's been a naughty boy this afternoon, then. Well I'll tell you what I'm going to do to
you..."

for me, afternoon seems to be about 3-6... before that it's "day"
Posted by
Saltation, 22:34, 12th August 2004:

If we agree that noon is exactly at 12:00:00 then anything after that would be after
noon.
/me guesses
Posted by
zxenor, 23:10, 12th August 2004:
yes it would be after noon... but would it be afternoon?
i think it's more of a cultural thing, since "afternoon" is usually only used for salutations and non-specific time/event coordination
for example, if the only time you use "afternoon" on a regular basis is when you eat lunch with your pals on thursdays, whatever time this happens to fall on would create your bias...
just a thought

but after noon does mean afternoon so it really is any time after noon. the problem is when does evening start? on returning from work? after dinner? when it gets dark?
Posted by
jeffld, 23:30, 12th August 2004:
sunset? dusk? twilight? evening? who invented all these things?

Wax on, whacks off.
In context, this is probably the best joke of the day. Respecto Sénor Warheado.
