(noone's even commented on cal's code's tolower'ing on "iamcal" having ABSOLUTE precedence even over the headers Auto Title Casing, which gave me a laugh re commitment to consistency and a vague wondering as to whether cal's done some funky private hierarchical parsing thing as a private joke or hacked it in as an exception)

cal, 23:11, 16th August 2004:
it's just a rule that's applied after the title casing :)

well, Log-Ic-Al-Ly [ref.: montypython's witchduckknight], by creating a custom declarative internally-recursing PostString object that simply took any string and internally reapplied the string to itself until it didn't change.
doing a one-off 3,4,whatever-step process as a series of steps is simply matching the solution to the problem and therefore insultingly too easy. replacing it with an indefinitely-stateless agonisedly-tense used-only-ever-once object is JUST the sort of thing to keep a hacker coding till 3am one Tuesday night one February, with his eyes revolving and his brain aflame, secure in the knowledge that while no one, NO ONE will be able to either maintain the code (which is fine because it will never need maintaining) OR understand the fevered "reasoning" that drove its creation, yet all will silently applaud the caffeinated stroke of lunatic genius that drove its creation.
wasn't that obvious?

*i* thought it was obvious.
what's WRONG with you people?!
you all need to smoke more coffee, you do. i've got some pretty good shit here, and the sugar caramelises quite nicely. here you go.

I haven't got the faintest idea what the fuck all that is about, personally.
Ah well.
I'll probably lose no sleep over it.

wh: i've written stuff like that when appropriate. i even had to write a mid-recurse-stack self-execing recurser once to get around an egregious memory-reuse design decision by the compiler writer.

cal: more a generalist version of your old-style math/design/real-underlying-structure boys. e.g. i contributed substantially to esr's most significant paper (not his most wellknown). personal emphasis on data design (REAL relational design, not "oracle" or "sybase") (*spit*) as i find an appropriate data design eliminates ~50% of most nonGUI coding and ~90% of the weight of the engine/problem-solver/business-rules bugs. java is just c++ with most of the fuckups taken out (but note "integer"). lisp, pascal, cobol, fortran, forth, basic, shell, nawk (dating myself there :), all just different words/rhythms to implement the same core structures and descriptions of the world/problem.
at the risk of heresy, perl seems to me to have accidentally spawned a spinoff culture of unix versions of microsoftdroids. suggests to me it's a good tool for the experienced/aware, but NOT a language to learn coding with

No. Cal would have said "Your
next point", if it had been that one, Sul.
Posted by
Saltation, 09:59, 18th August 2004:
good point
unless of course sul was using that as a pointer to the other point, alluding thereby in his archly knowing fashion to the coding flavour of the pointed-to posts. this would make it a pointer point, which is also a variety of horse-race, and sul likes the horses.

i thought of iamcal jackson more as the final and secret member of the jackson clan.
assembled by the same crack team of plastic surgeons which has learned over the years from its mistakes on michael, from the raw materials of the iamcal forum participants ("hey! my leg!"), to be the next new music sensation.
the awesome slick all-races-to-all-men frankenforum dances now into the light in a musical manner and a rythmical fashion!!! IAMCAL JACKSON!!! YEAHHHH!!!! WOOO!!!!! SCREEEEMMM!!!!! "oh iamcal, i wuv you!! here are my knickers and the addwess of my school!!!!"
