I have just cracked the internets.

Basically for the last few weeks my dialup modem (im a poor student) cant find a dialtone and ive been using uni and icafe computers. But today i tricked it by shoving the phone line into the modem slot and quickly hitting connect before it realises its engaged and it works! Until my flatmate picked up the phone downstairs, but I became a one man lynch mob and she won't do it again!

So yes, internet withdrawal is over and maybe I will consider keeping this instead of selling it on trademe.

Probably overpriced but I just want to see where its at and I'm reluctant to sell so if it doesnt sell im reasonably happy and if it does im in good money but then i have to buy a shitty laptop. ;l

YAY
and dude don't go the way of the laptop, it means you eventually carry it into uni.

this is also good becasue i cannot track my former webmaster friend, last i heard he had a bar in greece but he seems to have move on.

well done :)

I must admit I frown upon those who take their laptop to uni.

But.

but i think i will soon be one of them ;;

So do I (since you spurned my advances) but where would I get one at this time on a Thursday?
Posted by ellipse, around June 2005:

i think Brock is free

a toyboy?

No, an old grandmother. But I dare say Brock still fits the bill.

why didn't you just switch off the Wait for Dialtone option in the modem control panel?

EDIT: err, sometimes also expressed as "Ignore Dialtone" option, in which case you should unswitchitoff
Posted by robotnik, around June 2005:

aha, you wish.

I did switch it off but then the phone line went engaged and didnt accept any dialling.

;[

that's weird
if you manually connect on an engaged line then hit Cancel, the modem should send an explicit hangup (a real HUP!), which would leave the phone line un-engaged.

check it's not a phone error -- use kermit to open a modem session, then type this to force a HUP in any conditions:
+++ATHreturn

assuming the modem is ok, if the phone is still engaged, either it or the local exchange is defective
Posted by Saltation_DUPE1, around June 2005:

oops, forgot to mention: the 3 +s have to be typed in in very quick succession. 3 fast +s is the Escape sequence to force you back to command mode regardless of the state of the connection, the modem, or kermit.

also, if you're already in a valid command mode, say by the modem returning an error from the engaged line, you don't need to worry about the escape sequence

(the AT means what comes next is a modem command from the AT series (pretty much standard), and H just means hangup by sending a physical hangup signal to the exchange via the modem)

hmm. italic + looks exactly like roman + in this font.

What Brock means is "I don't understand".
Posted by robotnik, around June 2005:

cheers. went through that entire process. its a nice ideal... but i reckon its me phone line. got my flatmate to try with her laptop and she had four or five tries before she could get a dialtone, and that was only after plugging it in and straight away dialing
Posted by Saltation_DUPE1, around June 2005:

ring your phone company to complain :)
Posted by bain, around 7th June 2005:

hurry up and sort it out jc, i need someone to gb with ;]]]
Posted by ellipse, around 8th June 2005:

if his phone company is telecom, he should be sorted in 7.6 years
Posted by robotnik, around 8th June 2005:

correct.

so i called them and they said they will only talk to the bill payer, that's my flatmate. she knows nothing about technology in any form and kisses her hewlett packard laptop when she finds a great new feature like desktop background or personalised marquee screensavers.

um, sidetracked. so anyway, she called up and they told her there was no problem and to stop wasting their time.

only in this flat for 8 months anyway.

what you do, is -
1. ring the bastards
2. get the bill payer on the phone with them
3 the bill payer says "robotnick is my computer technician, and is authorised to ask you anything, or ask you to do anything he wants"

and then you kick their stupid mindless retard asses
