How much cheaper are iPod's in the USA than the UK?
Anyone know of the US equivalent of Dixons?
There's walmart:
www.walmart.com/catalog/sea...
Only place I could think of.
oh or radio shack
www.radioshack.com/search.a...
My knowledge of US stores is limited to ones mentioned in films or TV progs.
I imagine there are far better sites that'll ship to you as a "birthday present" or something to avoid tax. If not there should be.
for buying from the uk:
ebay.com/
it used to be pound for dollar (US$200 became GB£200), but it's improved markedly. don't forget tho that you'll pay import duty on things shipped via customs and duty is ~same rate as VAT. ie, treat usa prices as the ex-vat prices.
alternatively, if you're travelling via the US, just ditch all the packaging, separate the manuals/CDs from the actual product (or even mail them home), and claim to UK customs that you had it when you left the UK.
oh, and the USA equivalent of Dixons would be Fry's. in the sense of supersized.
oh HEY CAL!!
you're SF-based now, aren't you. if you haven't already, you have to go visit that MEGA-FRY's place that's about 15mins drive from mountain view, just off one of the freeways iirc. it's... monstrous. without exaggerating, it would jumbojet-hangar sized. or bigger. and it's alllllll geekgets. i mean, gadgets.
ask one of your local tech.mavens for the address, he's bound to know it.

or order from amazon in the usa, get it shipped to a friends place and get them to send it to you as a gift.
that might work
you assume that i haven't already been there
several times

He has a little spot next to some of the exhibits where he lays down his sleeping bag and box of tissues.
you assume that i haven't already been there
i did no such thing:
if you haven't already,
so can you remind me which fry's it is? eg by selecting it in
this googlemap search i prepared earlier, pasting back url
I don't want to buy from the UK, I have a friend who is going over.
easy then. just get him to hit walmart or whatever, wherever, and dump the packaging before getting on the return flight as per prev.post
i've been to palo alto and one of the sunnyvale ones
(i work in sunnyvale)
ta
>work
me: palo alto then mountain view
kinda freaky first time driving past Übernational Websites as Buildings, isn't it. and that weird ass cornershop takeway pizza place with food.com. food.com! how friggin close to the epicentre do you need to be to score THAT?? still got their card magnetted to my filing cabinet.
dare say the CA media ads are a bit more toned-down now tho. remember being unable to talk for 10 mins somewhere between laughing and looking for the ejection seat, hearing ad behind me as i struggled with the concept of breakfast: 'so, dave! wow! tell me! how do i dotcom my business?'
"...you think it's a
VERB???? FUCKING GROW UP!!!!"
it all went bang WAY later than i predicted. i'd seriously underestimated the sheer weight of money and the stickiness of communication across cultures in the usa. and also just how easy it is to shroud dimness with enthusiasm.
can remember one of the senior boys in wells fargo structured products announcing with point-scoring pride that he'd just gone long Dow. because the NASDAQ had gone, so it had to be next. i was literally lost for words. stumbling over "you know, there's utterly no relationship between the two?..." big charitable beam: 'ah no, it's gotta go!'
annoying: his utterly random 50:50 bet won that time
"right for the wrong reasons" we used to call that in oz
vindicating but very depressing: he called bankruptcy a couple of years later. based on his trading-- i knew roughly their salaries and heard their bonusses: if he hadn't thought he was skilled, he could have retired with his own private airport. same as every bloody tech.investment banker i know-- money spunked on self-image-driven fantasms.
and the sick thing? structured products is the COMPLICATED, EXPERT part of the market. and in the yank market, he was (regarded, paid) senior and skilled, regardless of being borderline insta-sackable in the aussie market.
something you learn early in finance: country variations are VASTLY more important than any other variation.
something you learn late in life: it's not just bonds&stocks: it's lifestyles.

THUD!!!
Salty, are you really really drunk or really really this dull?
for someone who can't understand "third twin", you're kinda quick to judge there, alfie boy
but yeah i was pretty drunk when i posted that
yeah, but a third twin is a triplet.
well done, alfie. well done.
so why say twin when you mean triplet?
well done, alfie. well done.
Was only trying to work out if you were a) drunk, b) stupid, or c) both.
So, thanks for clearing that one up.
Appologies for the bad mood I've been in Salty.
I have had a shitty week.
This swing album is helping my mood though.

Weird, possibly.
But not dull.
Borderline autistic, perhaps. But good at being a perpetual calendar.
still being.
calendar.
