Subarus do very little for me, really. It's not the most flattering picture, though, is it?
There is every chance that the car has been styled around some sort of performance advantage (aero or cooling requirements, for instance) in which case I approve. If it's purely aesthetic, then I move between apathy and not approving.
Cars should be functional. Anything else is pointless and a waste of a power to weight ratio. You don't last very long in racing unless you don't think like that, really.
Of course, there are times when comfort and opulence are part of the function (i.e. Bentleys, for an extremne example) in which case that's ok. But in this instance (i.e. in a competition car) there is very little room for aesthetics in my tolerance band. Although a pretty car is very often a fast one. Not many ugly racing cars turn out to be fast.

I've seen something very similar in the last few days, driving around here. Same body shape, but without the crash bars or advertising on the body. First time it was an Asian guy driving it, second time was an Asian girl. Maybe they're bro and sister.

I remember what I was going to ask you, Brockles, as I seem to remember you working with aeroplanes:
Can jumbo-jets go backward (while on the ground, obv.) under their own power? And if so, how?
Posted by
Brock, around September 2005:
Yes. Lots of jets can. They change the pitch of the blades on the engines, and produce reverse thrust. You must be familiar with that? The whooshing noise when planes slow down?
Although the wheel brakes do about 70% of the braking, the engines do contribute. They can, through this reverse thrust, go backwards, it's just a massively inefficient way to do it and they can't see where they are going so they don't usually bother.
747's also can take off into somethtng like a 22 deg crosswind. All three lots of wheels are steerable, and so they can crab (facing into wind) straight down the runway and take off at a reet funnt angle. I can look up a picture if you care enough.
here is a jumbo jet going backwards and sideways:
www.avpics.de/mov/civ/747_t...
(more here, incl. background to that link:
www.aviationpics.de/test/te...)
So the turbines still turn in the same direction?
Posted by
ellipse, around September 2005:
yeah but can a jumbo jet do the chicken dance?
the most-used commercial jets use "buckets", which swing out from teh rear of the engine and deflect the thrust forwards. if you're next to the engine on landing, look at the rear of it. so, yes, the turbines still turn in the same direction.

Do they change direction when they cross the equator?

the UTE!
therrrr UUUUUUTTTE!!!!!!!
This year the muster committee signed on for a 10-year lease of some government land to the north of town.
...
Lindsay understands Ute love - the passion, the devotion, the obsession the muster has so successfully tapped into.
The Ute is a hugely practical workhorse rural Australians can't live without.
It carts, hauls, spotlights, and tows, has room in the back for a dog and a swag, yet there are enough shapes, colours, and brands around so people can drive the Ute that suits them, their image, their job.
hmm
"I think it is a bit of a phenomenon which is just starting to rear its head. We have always had a love affair with the Ute but in the last few years Ford has come out with a new Ute, so has Holden, so the whole thing is on the boil. People have started to talk utes, think Utes etc so that means we are actually getting onto the race track with them. They go like hell and they steer pretty well too," Peter Brock said
remember: brocky is a fucking racing LEGEND. "king of the mountain" dropping his driving wheel off the edge of the track round a 90 degree bend cut into the hill over a 20 foot drop with his tail out.
casual-like.
oh christ though. he is SUCH a fucking NSWelshman/South-Easterner.
"There are a lot of women coming up to me asking me to sign my dash or bonnet and I say ‘this your Ute’ and they say ‘yeah’, they are really quite proud and up to speed with the mechanical aspects and stuff like that so it is not just a boyish thing. Well it is but I think the women have the attitude 'if you can't beat them join them'. I can put a sticker on my car too and there are some ripper stickers too, some of these girls have no shame," Peter said.
Say that shit in Qld or WA and they'd tell you to fuck off, petey boy.
damn. i just lost all respect for the man.
feels the same as watching rossi race when he's pushed. skill doesn't mean you have to shit on other people/fuck them up when they're playing fair and you're not.

Ok. Hang on.
Real Men don't go around.
Talk about pucker factor.
"While some of those photos are obviously botched approaches and landings,
several are actually S.O.P. (standard operating procedure). The 747 is built to withstand landings
where the actual touchdown occurs at as much as a 45 degree crab angle.
This is because the wing mounted engines only allow a very small amount of bank angle at
touchdown to prevent an engine strike. So, 747 pilots must us the "crab method" of crosswind correction
all the way through touchdown, instead of the more landing gear friendly "wing low method."
Boeing tested this theory in 45 knot direct crosswinds with no damage to the aircraft or its landing gear."
oh, and check out the Semtex vs. Jumbo video in the hidden part of the post
oh and also from ages ago: brock, note that if an air traffic controller saw this last (deliberate experiment) on radar, because this is outside of standard airline guidelines, it would be regarded as a military aircraft since only the military are ROUTINELY allowed to throw an aircraft round like that. it's a permission issue, not an airframe issue.

Better 4WD than nasty as fuck-FWD. Not my thing, personally, although I have never disliked Mazdas. I drove the entire range on a regular basis some years ago, and a selection of the high performance ones a couple of years ago, and they are pretty competent cars in the main. There's plenty of other things I would have spent that much money on if it was for me, though. Rather predictably, I'd go for a S/H BMW 5-series and not lose the £6K you will straight away on depreciation.
Each to their own and that.
a thought: buy _in australia_ a 20 year old Monaro (no rust: our petrol is clean), ship it over here, fit new suspension (suspension costs fuck all, weirdly). more power and more fun than the bmw 5, equal road holding, rear wheel drive, half the price. probably even avoid road tax! you know it makes sense.
