Tech people:

Help.

Last night, all of a sudden, my internet stopped working. I restarted the router (among other things) and it was fine for 10 minutes, and then the browser started not finding web pages. Then a while later the email programme (thunderbird) stopped finding the server. I disabled the firewall on the router (after a long period of fault finding and re-installing, and disabled the firewall on the machine itself (Sygate) and it didn't make any difference - after 10 minutes (or so) from re-booting the router, the net disappeared.

Does this sound like an internet issue, or the router? The router still thinks it's connected, from the admin screen, and Firefox has no issue talking to the router, it just stops seeing anything external. And none of the other programmes (Trillian, Skype, Googletalk etc) could see anything after a while either. It's like all my traffic is being slowly blocked.

My thoughts now are:
1: Router is fucked. (I have restored factory defaults and reset everything - got the same 'working + 10 minutes = not working')
2: Connection is fucked.

Anyone got any ideas as to where I should be looking? I have essentially re-installed everything and tried every cmobination of the two firewalls to try and fault find but it seems independant of them all.

did you ring your ISP to check your router was connected to the internet, and their services were up?
if it is, try connecting using dialup
Posted by Saltation_DUPE1, around September 2005:

could be your ISP's DNS server failed? ie your connection to them is fine, but when your apps try to get an internet address they get nothing back.
if this is the case, nothing to do but wait till they fix it. or add a public dns server's address to either your router's or your PC's network information-- if that works, you know it's definitely the isp so you can ring them to sort it out.
Posted by ellipse, around September 2005:

bribe sal with alchool to come over and sort it all?
Posted by Brock, around September 2005:

What is this public DNS server thingy that you speak of? Would one have such a thingymawhassit?

I will be calling them today, I just wanted to make sure that there was a reasonable chance that it was there fault before I made a prick of myself when they said "Your phone line must be hanging out of the wall" or other some such bollocks.

www.opennic.unrated.net/pub...
try one of the Tier 2 sites listed

(.glue? that's a new one on me)

add one of the IP addresses (eg the uk one: 194.164.6.112) to the list of DNS servers stored by either your PC (look in Control Panels, shd be a textbox list somewhere in your Networking or Internet controlpanel) or on your router (use whatever tool you use for your router's admin)

but based on what you originally posted, it's definitely worth ringing your ISP to ask if their DNS server had problems on the weekend. if so: do nothing, just wait for them to fix it.

Slaver the router in butter

Before you go taking things apart, installing/reinstalling, wasting money on the phone to useless techies etc., try scanning for viruses and spyware.

I should shoot your ass

Gary: First thing I did, dude. I figured that was so obvious (and I was stealth posting at work, so in a rush) that I didn't need to mention it.

Apparently my IP address "was an old one and it wasn't added to the list when the ISP did a massive upgrade because they thought it was a dead one".

Sounds like utter shit to me, but hey, what the fuck do I know. It sounds more like "I pressed the wrong button and I have moved my cup of coffee off it now".
Posted by Brock, around September 2005:

Oh, and I rang from work. I'm not a complete dumb arse.

:)
Posted by Gary, around September 2005:

Ah, good stuff. Sounds like they made a fuck up and whoever you spoke to wasn't too good at covering it up! ;)
Posted by Brock, around September 2005:

Bugger. That ain't fixed it. I am getting about 20 minutes between router re-starts before pages start to slowly disappear.

Now disappearing:
First Flickr, then radiotimes, then my blog, then bloglines won't update or find the main page, Trillian is losing channels like a snow covered aerial. Then email doesn't work.

Although iamcal is ok right now, I have low hopes. They all disappear eventually.

Ah, the guy that deals with my stuff reckons that my line was upgraded to 2Mb, and it is shitting out the BT line. This was done over the weekend, which would make sense.

It was a good recovery. He texted me back with the answer within 10 minutes. Although I have no idea how many people are there to help him make stuff like that up..

:)

I am getting downgraded in the morning to try and fix it. And there was me thinking I couldn't get any lower...
