I am, as some of you may be aware, moving. A long way. Possibly (if all falls gently into place) Australia.

I have a related computer question: (and no my internet is not fixed, for those that care, it's just twice as good as it was - i.e. shit rather than dogshit. I can get 10-20 minutes uninterrupted surfing on average before crashage).

Anyway, the computer question:
I will be packing up my PC and putting it in with the longer term shipment of my belongings as it is too bulky. The thought of not having a 'puter for 2 months or so tha this stuff may take to get to me (regardless of the inconvenience) made me consider flying some stuff out rather than shipping it. This will (I estimate) cost me about an extra £300.

So my thought is this - I can pay £300 and have (essentially) nothing to show for it, or I can call the PC non-essential and just buy a laptop and take that on the plane with me, which will give me flexibility when everything else arrives.

Any thoughts you lot? I was just going to buy a fairly basic laptop (no large HD required as it will mirror and then be used for other stuff, I guess), but then I decided why bother, why not buy a decent one (about £600 for a Dell). Then I lost confidence. So, any ideas on other options? My Psion will handle email, but not browsing so that has pretty much had it's day, really. I'd like almost a 'pocket laptop' but wouldn't know where to start. I don't even know if I should consider a Mac ibook thingy, or if it's not worth the hassle because all my other stuff is PC based.

So, is there a decent machine out there (with a reasonable sized screen) that has a proper keyboard, colour, ability to run email, browsing and possible chat programmes, maybe wireless and all that?

Help a stupid bloke out this Christmas, people? Should I just buy a laptop?
Posted by ellipse, around September 2005:

why not sell the pc
make a stopover in the USA and pick up a laptop there
crumbs you could even get on of those flash apple powerthingies everyone raves about

However my friend works in the world of moblie computing so will ask her properly, seeing as she knows more than me, which amazingly is a fair amount.

Buy a nice laptop. Australian chicks dig iBooks - fact!
Posted by Miki_DUPE1, around September 2005:

I love my laptop, I don't have a desktop. It's great to curl up on the sofa and surf the net in stead of being stuck at a desk. Obviously also very handy for taking to other places.

3 main options if you're looking to minimise $$/hassle:
1/ laptop plus an external firewire case for your disk(s)
2/ pull out the disk(s) (and anything else you might have installed which is above normal spec, eg graphics card) and just lob them in your suitcase- on arrival, buy new case and install them
3/ grab a TNT magazine and check out the elcheapo ship-to-oz offers in the back pages.
Posted by Saltation_DUPE1, around September 2005:

by the way, what's the story with the possible move? and where would you be likely to end up?
Posted by SuperFunGordon_DUPE1, around September 2005:

Be sure to check the prices of laptops in Australia - it might be cheaper to buy one out there...
Posted by ellipse, around September 2005:

Brock wanted to move to NZ but i got a court order keeping him 2,000 kms away, so he had to settle on Australia
Posted by Saltation_DUPE1, around September 2005:

cheapest kit with biggest range of options: stopover in singapore. bigger range even than in the usa, same prices. 240V, same plugs as UK
Posted by SuperFunGordon_DUPE1, around September 2005:

Er, the USA plugs and voltages are different to the UK ones...
Posted by Saltation_DUPE1, around September 2005:

correct, although i fail to see the relevance to the matter at hand.
Posted by Brock, around September 2005:

Being as I am going to Australia...

(so does that mean the voltages are the same, Sal? What spec are the plugs?)
Posted by SuperFunGordon_DUPE1, around September 2005:

Ah, I missed out the 'than in' in 'bigger range even than in the usa', or do I smell an edit?
Posted by SuperFunGordon_DUPE1, around September 2005:

Next important point - are Australian plugs the same as UK ones?
Posted by Brock, around September 2005:

"do I smell and edit?"

I usually sniff and turn my nose up. Does that count?
Posted by Saltation_DUPE1, around September 2005:

no edit, pure posty goodness.
voltage same UK-OZ, but the plugs ARE different. so take a UK powerboard or two and buy an oz-uk adapter. or rewire the plugs.
Posted by SuperFunGordon_DUPE1, around September 2005:

Oops (:
Posted by SuperFunGordon_DUPE1, around September 2005:

Voltage is pretty unimportant for laptops, as they have transformers on the power leads.
Posted by ellipse, around September 2005:

since even i can rewire plugs, i'd reccomend that option.
Posted by ellipse, around September 2005:

don't most flights to NZ/OZ from the UK do a Hong Kong stopover?

HK uses English layout for he default keyboard, The national languages in HK is Cantonese, Mandarin and English. With all the westerners living in Hong Kong, it would be a little silly to have all the computers type chinese only.
Posted by SuperFunGordon_DUPE1, around September 2005:

Surely, by definition, there can only be one national language?

I've heard that Andora is the cheapest place in the world for electrical goods (but I'm probably wrong). Obviously, this isn't much good for Brock, but hey-ho.

Surely, by definition, there can only be one national language?

Surely, by definition, whatever a nation declares as its national languages will be its national languages?

E.G. Switzerland: French and German. Canada: French and English. Wales: Welsh and English.
Posted by ellipse, around September 2005:

NZ = Maori and English

You is a fuckball, and showing the definition for A national language does not in any way preclude the defining of a second language. Nowhere in your definition does it say "Sole" or "Main" or "only".

Fuckball. Although I think I already said that.

SuperFunGordon are you arsepuppy or not? If so, howzit AP longtime no speak...if not hi SFG nice to make your aquaintance. They are English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, Tswana, Pedi, North Sotho, South Sotho can't remember the rest. I only speak Afrikaans.

Posted by SuperFunGordon_DUPE1, around September 2005:

Brock, you're right. Nowhere in 'my' definition does it say any of those things.

It says "The language spoken and written by the majority of people in a country". And, of course, you can have lots of majorities, can't you?

Sadly, one definition is not enough to prove a point. Especially as there are many examples to the contrary.

The whole concept of a national language seems a pretty absurd one, anyway...

Posted by SuperFunGordon_DUPE1, around September 2005:

I don't think I'm ever going to get to lunch - my two colleagues have gone off for a lunchtime 'meeting' at the Ivy or somewhere, which I doubt they'll come back from, leaving me manning the office.

I should have got the missus to make me a packed lunch (except she'd have told me to fuck off).

I'm hungry :(
Posted by syl_DUPE1, around September 2005:

Me too. I want a Russian and chips. Not allowed.
Posted by SuperFunGordon_DUPE1, around September 2005:

Russian?
Posted by WarHead, around September 2005:

You don't think you're ever going to get lunch, SFG?

I can't imagine a life devoid of lunch, particularly just because two colleagues have gone off for a lunchtime 'meeting' at the Ivy.

Apart from anything else, I know there are laws about being enttitled to a lunch break. Just put the phones on divert, inform your union rep you're going for a butty and lock yer door on the way out.

A note, Blutacked to the door telling folk you'll be 'Back in 5 minutes' is optional, but do not indicate what time you actually went out.
Posted by Brock, around September 2005:

Poor SFG. Always having trouble trying to fill his lunchbox...
Posted by SuperFunGordon_DUPE1, around September 2005:

WTF is a 'union'? Only six people work here.
Posted by WarHead, around September 2005:

What do the rest of them do?

*Bum, bum.*

Seriously, though, there's nothing stopping you joining the Transport and General Wanker's Union, is there?

Or you could always inform someone else's union rep. It's the principle that's important.
Posted by SuperFunGordon_DUPE1, around September 2005:

Sales, admin, & reception. It's just me and the receptionist ATM.
Posted by WarHead, around September 2005:

Then why not lock the door, Blutack a notice on it and stay in? You and the receptionist could enjoy a pork sub together. And you don't even have to leave the office to buy one.
Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink.
